Mims Gang: Here's a great website that I happened upon recently that is a community newsletter for North Mymms, England. Click on "history" and you will find much information and images about North Mymms and South Mimms. Enjoy! http://ds.dial.pipex.com/town/park/dj09/index.shtml -Steve
Steve: In my search I found this info on the Mims name. The surname Mims is of English origin. It is derived from Mims which is the name of places both in Hertfordshire and Middlesex. In general, a local name was either assumed by an individual from the patrimonial estate, if he held land, or was bestowed by others on whose place of residence or birth it was and who had subsequently moved. Thus the surname simply denotes one who came from Mimms. The meaning of the placename is unknown although one suggested derivation is from the early tribal or folk name Mimmas. An official survey carried out in 1984 estimated that there were 26,267 bearers of the surname Mims in the US at that time. The form Mimms was rarely encountered. I got this info in a shopping mall from a guy that used a computer to find your family Coat of Arms. So you can take it for what it's worth. Roy Mims, San Diego, Ca.
Regina and Group: At one point in my digging I did some looking into the towns of North Mimms (also North Mymms) and South Mimms in England. It is believed that the Mims name originates from our ancestors taking the name of this place when surnames began to be used after the Norman Conquest. It is also thought that Mims may be an old Anglo-saxon tribal name, but historians are not sure at all. Both of these towns are just to the northwest of London and are both still there today (we need to go there and have a pint!!). I also learned in my digging that the name has been spelled various ways since it was first recorded in 1085 or so (Mimmine, Mymmes, Mymms, Mimms, Mims), and that "Mims" was the spelling of choice in the 1600's. So perhaps this is why our Thomas is listed as "Mims" when he arrived here in America in 1657. "Mimms" is more common there in England today. Anyway, unless Thomas went to Wales first on the way to sailing to America (as Bob Neff from the list suggests) he most likely came from England. I am totally convinced though that Mims (Mimms) is a very old English name. -Steve
Is there anyone that knows what country Thomas Mims originally came from ? I have seen Wales & England . Thanks Regina [email protected]
I know where someone can obtain an ORIGINAL MARRIAGE LICENSE on the marriage of Ocie Brown who married Bessie Mims 18th July 1929, Book 477, Marriage Record 15. The Bryan County Heritage Library in Calera, Oklahoma has been given many original marriage licenses to distribute to family members. If this individual is a member of your family, you can send a stamped Self addressed envelopt to Bryan County Heritage Association, P. O. Box 153, Calera, Oklahoma 74730. Jeanne, Did you ever find the source of this info (regarding Littleton & Sylvia)? At one time, I believe you told me you found this info on Ancestry.com. I would love to know who submitted this info to Ancestry since Sylvia is my g-g-grandmother. As far as Littleton being the father of Matthew, that has never been proven (to my knowledge) and is purely speculation. Sylvia is the mother of Matthew, although there is no confirmation that her maiden name was actually RAINES (again, speculation). Matthew did have a son named Pinckney. His full name was Marshall Pinckney MIMS (b. 10-30-1884; d. 1-18-1964). He is buried in Steep Hollow Cemetery, near Bryan, TX. I have dates on Matthew and his wife also, if anyone is interested. I'm still hoping that some day someone will be able to help me with this family. While it was raining today I was thumbing through "The Survey of Irwin County, GA Cemeteries" book and the name Thomas Mims (1849-1865) caught my eye. He appeared in the Whitley Cemetery. Now I've lived in Irwin Co. all my life and my house (where I've lived all my married life - 34 yrs.) is located less than 1/4 mile from this cemetery. My father-in-law and brother-in-law are buried there but I never knew a Mims was buried there. I think I found him in the 1860 Irwin Co. census: #74 Lucinda Mims 30 F Domestic * Thos Weekly Mims 12 M* (could this be him????) Martha Mims 7 F Eliza Mims 5 F Nancy Mims 3 F My grandmother was Julia MIMS Luke (1888-1971) and her father was Frank Peyton MIMS (1853-1906). Both lived in Irwin Co. during the last of their lives but moved here from Sumter Co., GA, sometime after 1890. I've never known why they moved to Irwin Co. Did they have kin here already? Could this Thomas MIMS be kin? This I may never truly know. My husband has received two letters from the Whitley Cemetery commitee that listed all the names of the ones buried there - but neither one had this Thomas MIMS listed. I first thought it was just a misprint in the county book (it's full of misprints). So after the rain let up my husband and I rode down to the Whitley Cem. I had to see for myself that a MIMS was there. Also because I have walked all over that cemetery and never once saw that name. My curiousity was about to kill me. Sure enough, it was there but ofcourse it was hard to read. This is what I could make out: Thomas Mimes (yes it had an "e" in it) born 1849 and died 1865 If you think this Thomas MIMS is your kin and would like a picture of his grave, please send me your snail-mail address. I am trying to find information on William Mims and Rebecca Connell. Rebecca and William were married in Chilton County Alabama and had several children: James Alec "Bud" Mims George Washington Mims William Joseph Mims Eligh Mims Lee Alexander Mims another son name unknown James "Bud" Mims is my great-grandfather, I know that William Rebecca left Chilton County and went to Franklin county Alabama for a while onto Mississippi and then to Texas and back. Some of the sons and their families went also, on the way back from Texas some of the family stayed in Mississippi. James returned to Franklin County Alabama. He is buried there with his wife, Sarah "Sally" Jones Mims, in Old Burleson Cemetery, close in Vina. I would like to know the connection between William and the Mims in Carroll County. Was William related to Benjamin Franklin Mims? What I have stated is about all I know so any info will help. I have some names of children "grandchildren" of william and Rebecca, but I have been unable to carry the line further back than William and would greatly appreciate any help.
