He was born in the Vance Family (given name unknown) and later adopted (when unknown) by the Graves Family with a given name of John Charles. We believe the Graves ran or owned a General Store in Carlton and John had at least two (2) sisters Alice who may have kept the surname of Vance and Ida born in the Graves Family.
