Cecile Archangel Venia was born Dec. 1 or 2, 1908 in Temperance, Michigan, where her parents, Harvey and Lyda Venia owned the General Store. She never married, but had a very interesting life. She was an actress on stage in New York in the late twenties, a radio actress in Detroit, a photographer in Chicago, and at one time, an industrial "spy". She was a glamorous woman with auburn hair and a flair for dressing and the dramatic. She frequently took vacations to Florida before it was common to do so, and even visited Cuba before Castro and his regieme took over. She was prominent in the Toledo Business women's Association. She died in 1988.

I'm sorry that I am so late in replying to your query. My aunt was Cecile Venia, for years her studio was in Toledo at 2727 Monroe St, Toledo, 6, Ohio until about 1960. She then mopved two doors down at 2725 Monroe Street. Cecile studied photography with Lionel Hyman at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. Aunt Cec specialized in Weddings and studio photography. I think somewhere I have a copy of your Madonna portrait. She was known for a few more, mostly featuring my cousins. One is my cousin Jean Marie Venia dressed in informal country clothing with a straw hat. Another is of my twin cousins, Bill and Bob Russ as altarboys/choirboys. Again, this one was a Christmas Card. Before her death, her equipment was donated to Lourdes College, Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, Ohio. They may have further information on other portraits. If I can help you any further, please do not hesitate to contact me. Mary Clark

Sorry that I hadn't seen it sooner. The "Madonna" is my cousin Emma Venia, daughter of Francis and Margie Venia of Toledo. Aunt Cecile took it for a Christmas card and for a contest when Emma was a teen. I remember the photo with the ribbon hanging on the wall in the living room of her studio. Sorry, but I have no idea where Emma is today.

He came to settle in Detroit about 1852. I think he died between 1900 and 1910. I am sure there is probably a connection to the Conrad John you were married to. Maybe he is great or great, great grandson. I am specifically looking for he names of Conrad's (born 1832) parents and maybe pictures of him and/or his wife. Thanks for the reply. Dawn

Hi folks, Just finished reading the newly received "Michigan's Habitant Heritage" magazine, April 2003, from cover to cover, and saw so many French names I recognized this time! Pays me to keep working on all these difficult connections and sending in my French-Canadian Heritage Society membership to the Frenchtown (Monroe county) Chapter! Thanks for your continuing encouragement! Re: NAMES in April 2003 issue: It was fun to recognize the Celine DION ancestry names, and Le Neuf Family...(Page 49-55) especially in the part about DION's relative Elizabeth "Sissi," princess in Bavaria (page 54 of HERITAGE), From DESROISERS on page 53, their Generation VIII, "Anne du Herisson and Antoine DESROISERS," They also had a daughter, Mary DESROISERS, married Alexander RAOUL listed in Denissen's page 1024, so Celine DION is related to our Mary Ann ELDER ROE, who married JULIUS ROE (we now know his father Dominic James ROE/RAU/REAU on Page 1025 of Denissen's, is linked to Alexander RAOUL). >From Marie Catherine Quirein <JAQuirein@cox-internet.com> Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2003 ....from the files at St. Joseph's Church in Erie Michigan... .."In 1833, Julius and Daniel REAU sons of Dominic REAU and Genevieve ST. BERNARD were baptised at St. Joseph's. Godparents for Julius were Julian LaPointe and Olive Reau. Godparents for Daniel were Isadore Cousineau and Lucide Reau.." Love these French connections! Also, there is a researcher that does a lot of work on Poorhouses. We don't have her email address but she identifies herself as the Poorhouse Lady. Also, don't think that the indiviuals that lived at the poor houses were inmates, they were residents because they could not afford to live anyplace else. Sadly the records are gone. According to an administrator I talked with, they were taken many years ago by an exiting staff. Unless they show up in an attic or basement somewhere we will never know where they went to. Bette Sutton-Rodey
Is there any known journals of the inmates at the poorhouse -? I am searching for info on Veniers/Poupards that were housed there for a shortime in the early 1900's. I would assume it would have been the same big home on Rte 50. Thanks,
