Parents were Julien Menard and Marie Ladouceur from St Alphonse Quebec. There were eight children ...five born in Quebec and three in Monroe. Sam was a blacksmith, married Susanne Santure had many children and is buried at the St Charles Church Cemetery, Newport. I have information on the family as far back as where they came from in France if you are interested. Suzanne

Do you still xerox copies of that St. Charles' history of Newport? I would sure like one. I was born there. In fact, my mom & dad had "Clark's Quarry" (that great big swimming hole) in Newport, Michigan for a few brief & glorious summers in the 50's & 60's. Now, I'M IN MY 50'S! All the neighborhood kids swam there summer after summer. It was dramatic, scary, romantic, & blissful. I used to be Nancy Clark, now Nancy Clark Darcey.
Could you please look up the Gilbreath name? These are my grandparents. Are there any other Gilbreaths buried in Monroe? I am also looking for the name John Nelson, an older half brother of my grandmothers. He would have been born in the 1890s. Thank you, Carol Teal

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UGB.2ACI/1716.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Greetings: I did the St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroe listing in part for the GSMC in 1980. It was compiled from readable tombstones, numbering over 10,000. We estimate that there are probably a good 2,000+ unmarked burials there also. I redid this project (crazy me) a couple of years ago. Up over 12,000 or so. The first project info is available at Ellis branch, Monroe County Library System. The first & second are at the Archives of the Monroe County Historical Museum in Monroe. History: This cemetery is the 3rd in line used by the oldest church, St. Mary, Monroe. It was formerly known as St. Antoine (St. Anthony) of the River Raisin, Frenchtown. The first cemetery has unmarked graves, located 2.5 miles west of current Monroe. Church records remain. The second St. Antoine (St. Mary) remains as a small burial ground just south of St. Joseph's, Monroe, on North Monroe Street. Some tombstones remain. I was involved in a project 10 years ago to 'resurrect' tombstones we found buried there. Church records remain for this cemetery, though the burials ca. 1848-49 are gone. Please note: Without a tombstone, particular burials cannot be known, as a map of this 2nd cemetery does not exist. Even St. Joseph's map is a modern one, and notes lot owners, not individual burials. I have worked with St. Joseph's for years to help add to the lists of those buried there, but sometimes exact sites will not be known, but it sometimes is possible to figure the probable ce! metery by time-period, etc. Feel free to contact me with your questions. By the way, there are several St. Joseph cemeteries in Monroe county- St. Joseph, Monroe; St. Joseph, Erie (south Monroe county), St. Joseph, Ida (south-mid county), St. Joseph, Maybee (north-mid county).

The Sisters have their own, known as "St. Mary's Cemetery" not to be confused with the St. Mary's church. If you need a DOD, I can give that to you, or a name. Let me know. The markers within St. Joseph's Cemetery were removed several years ago and replaced by a large monument to the Sisters, with their names and DOD on it, which includes maiden names, which had not been previously noted on the markers. The Sisters were laid out in chronological order, with the most recent burials in St. Mary's Cemetery (IHM). Even though the Academy itself is not in existence (I am a Grad), some of the tradition (?) goes on in the form of St. Mary Catholic Central, a joining of the girl & boy schools. The IHM Sisters have kept the Academy info, though. Hope this helps.
