I wonder if any one has any thoughts about finding my grandfather's birth certificate. He is Charles Bernardy, the oldest son of Michael Bernardy and Maggie Kullman. Family folklore was that he was born in Menominee on 5/10/1890 and moved to Chicago with his family when he was a small child. His social security application confirms that he believed that he was born in Menominee. But I have written both Menominee County and the state of Michigan and neither can find him. Menominee County did find a record for his brother John. The birth record misspelled the surname as Bernardi, and it was filed in July 1892 although John was born in on 8/31/1891. I assume that the family filed John's birth certificate just before they moved to Chicago. I know that they were in Chicago in October of 1892 because their third son Michael was born there. I would expect that if the family filed one delayed birth certificate for John, they could easily file Charles' at the same time. But that doesn't appear to be the case. Charles' father Michael was from Irsch, Germany and I have been unable to find any ties to Menominee for him. Charles' mother was Maggie (Margarethe, Margaret) Kullman from Manitowac, WI. Her parents were Jacob Kullman and Anna Maria (Mary) Wallau both of whom originally came from Gau-Algesheim, in Hessen Germany. I have found them in the 1880 census in Kossuth, WI and property records indicate that they owned a farm in Kossuth. Margarethe and Michael were married in Manitowac Rapids on October 30, 1889. Any help someone can give me in figuring out this puzzle would be greatly appreciated. Anna Marie Bernardy Schuh
