Hi everyone, November is the month of the veteran ~ someone to whom we all owe a "thank you." In honor of these brave men and women who serve to protect us, I challenge the entire list to tell us something about (at least) 20 veterans from our county who served during any time period, whether they saw combat or not. This is a group effort, not an individual one. Kindly remember ~ as much as we owe our living veterans a "thank you," we do not discuss them here. This is for their and their family's safety, Only those who have passed on count towards the 20. This ought to keep you busy! :-D Colleen
I have to say that is a hard challenge but I will give it a try. First I will start with the first war, The Revolutionary War, in the United states. Philip Bastian, out of PA, and Jacob Miller, out of PA, fought in that war. And of course we must not forget George Washington and Paul Revere served in that war as well. The next War would be The Civil War: I have a few for that one. Daniel Pillars and Joseph Pillars served under Captian Milroy. In the Unit known as the Bloody Ninth. out of Indiana. From what I have read about the unit it was one of the worse and best unit out during that time and was the only Unit to recieved their colors during battle. James Seward and George Seward and Thomas Seward served in a Deleware Unit. First was for 3 months gaurding the railroad and then a longer term in another unit. And I believe Stephen B. Davis was also in the Civil war. He came out of a Unit from Wisconsin. The next war is WWI and WWII there both My Grandfathers Emil Johnson and Leonard Porath served. I don't know much about either being in the war except that Grandpa Porath was a Bugler. Edwin Johnson (an Uncle) died January 1, 1945. They had just recieved a letter from him and then a day or so later recieved news he was shot and killed in action. He left a new born baby and wife. He was driving a jeep when his unit was attacked and killed. Then my uncle Leroy was in WWII. James Bastian was also in the service(my great granfather) He lost his mother Julia in childbirth at a very young age (2 yrs) and was raised by his father who never remarried. and Uncle Howard was in the war. There is also a friend of mine whose father was in the war. In vietnam war there was Roland Peterson and a few others that I cannot remember the names on as well as a few I cannot name since they still live. As you know you have the well known people like George Washington, Paul Revere, General Grant and General Lee to name some. This was diffucult since many I know that are vetrans are still alive and well. Hope this works.
