St. Williams has been torn down for quite a few years. I went there as a child (christened, etc.). After I'd moved away, my Mom was going to Resurrection. Around Memorial Day, the Michael J. Anuta Research Center opens. I know that they have an old map of Menominee. It is in back of the Menominee CountyHistorical Society building that used to be a church. It is at approximatly 10th Street and 12th Avenue. If you can wait til spring, I will research it further for you. Also the Co. Courthouse probably has and old map, too, that they could copy and send to you. Its in the 900 block of 10th Avenue. Sincerely, Marie
This will be a THREE person reply........ Doug...& Jim....Yes when you get the scanner going sure would like to have copy of old city map. The one I found on the Menominee web site from 1919 only lists a few of the street names. Kris......Thanks for looking up the Magnuson's in your area, in my family it is MagnussEn/MagnusEn, my Grandfather and family is the only one to retain "ssen" the other two brothers use "sen" , most of the "son/sson" were from Sweden. In regards to Central Lutheran Church in Menominee, per the history of Menominee book-pg 51, it was organized by the Norwegian people Oct 1888 & took the name Nowegian Lutheran Society. In 1890 the group purchased the lot on Somerville where the present church stands. The parsonage was Maud Street & Somerville Ave. By, the way, this was my home church when I lived in Menominee. Hope this helps you. Any other info on the church, you can write to the church at that address. Nancy
Bob, I too am from Marinette and from the layout you described, I have to agree that the old 300 block is now current day 600 block. I was going to take a drive over this week and "scout out" the area because the only church I remember in that area is what is now the Museum on the next block (excluding the two existing churches in that area). Also, the spot where the Middle school now stands used to be the old Menominee City Cemetery, so that is probably why even on the old maps, it looks like there were no buildings in the 900 & 1000 blocks. Thanks to all for contributing to this topic! The 1897 Menominee City Directory lists house numbers on Somerville Ave in the 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, and 800 blocks stopping at 806 Somerville Ave, only two houses into that 6th block. Then Somerville Ave continues again at 1110 and includes house numbers in the 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, and 1500 blocks. Even back then, no buildings apparently existed on the 900 and 1000 blocks. When I look at the current map of 12th ave, it extends from 6th to 11th Street and extends just slightly into the 1100 block before coming to a dead end. Eventually, 12th Ave continues for another five-block section. It would seem that the original 300-800 blocks of Somerville match up with what would be today the 600-1100 blocks of 12th Ave, especially considering the fact that the 800 block of Somerville ended quickly and included only 2 houses. (Other blocks on Somerville included from 6-12 houses.) If my hypothesis is correct, that would place 305 Somerville Ave near the beginning of the 600 block of 12th Avenue. When I look over the list of buildings on Somerville from 1897, I notice only one obvious landmark .... the Norwegian Lutheran Church at 314 Somerville Ave. "Cliff" from Tacoma in a previous message indicated that the old Norwegian Church is now called Central Lutheran. When I checked an online telephone directory, I find that Central Lutheran is located at 612 12th Ave!! Surely there would be people at that church to confirm that today's building was built on the same property where it existed 100 years ago. If so, then I believe we know where 305 Somerville Ave used to be! - Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kris" <kris@webcntrl.com> To: <MIMENOMI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 08, 2003 11:03 PM Subject: Re: [MIMENOMI] Where is Somerville Ave in Menominee? > Hi All, > > Ok, the only thing at the end of 12th Ave are old houses that have been > there a LONG TIME. I live in Marinette, Wisconsin, twin city of Menominee, but not really familiar with the streets in Menominee. They are quite a mess up towards the bay area. The middle school stands right in the middle of 12th Ave. That is why you see a blank spot near 13th street. (Someone had written about that in a message). Then up towards first street they are all messed up too so I don't know where the 300 block would be. Maybe in those days the street ran right up to the bay. Wish I could be of more help. Even looking at the map in the telephone book, I can't help you more. From: Bob Kuehn To: MIMENOMI-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, March 08, 2003 4:59 PM Subject: Re: [MIMENOMI] Where is Somerville Ave in Menominee? Wow! Thanks for the quick response. Do you live in Menominee or are you familiar with that part of the city? If not, you can disregard the following two paragraphs .... At some time I would like to drive up to Menominee from Madison WI to do research and take a look at the location where 305 Somerville Ave once existed. "Microsoft Streets and Trips" software shows that going east towards the lake, 12th Ave ends at 6th Street. I'm wondering what now exists in that area that used to include the 3rd block of Somerville? Maybe the blocks were numbered differently back then, but according to today's mapping of streets, the 300 block would extend between 3rd & 4th Street. The 1897 Menominee City Directory indicated that Somerville Ave extended from the 300 block to the 1500 block. Back then , the Norwegian Lutheran Church was at 314 Somerville Ave. Thanks again, Donna, for the info.
Hi All, Ok, the only thing at the end of 12th Ave are old houses that have been there a LONG TIME. I really don't think the road ever continued beyond 6th Street because the next block is 1st St. Because of the way the streets angled, there is not 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th streets in that area, they are all further south. Remember the streets all had names back then and probably did not follow a rigid numbering system, so my guess is that the block between 6th & 7th Streets started the numbering so that would make 305 Somerville Ave somewhere in todays 900 12th Ave. Of course I could be wrong about this, but by looking at today's map and knowing the area, it's the best guess I can come up with. Hope this helps??? Hei Bob I think we are on the same wave length!!!!!!!! My Grand Father helped in the organization of the "Central Lutheran Church" Somerville & State in 21 Oct 1888 when first started it was called "Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of Menominee, Mich.", my FarFar was the Secretary at that time. At first they met at the "Swedish Lutheran Church" then built a new church in 1890-91 and the parsonage was purchased in 1899. A Great uncle was a Deacon, Great Aunt was Organist & Pres. of the Mission Society. I received all this from the Archives of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. As you can see the Magnussen/ Magnusen were quite active in Menominee. My Grand Father Ole Magnussen was married to Karoline Marie Severinsdtr. Vaksvik in 1885 in Menominee, they had 4 children (My father B: 1890) then returned to Norway to take over the family farm, then my Father returned to USA in 1906. Looking at the address you were looking for, my ancestors were in the 13th St and 25th Ave area, the other side of town. I to would like to visit Menominee but we are located in Tacoma, WA, so it's not just a hop-skip & a jump for us.....I'm sure I still have remaining relatives in the Menominee area, but so far have not been able to contact them.
