For those of you that are not familiar with the MI Tombstone Project, you may want to take a look at the Higbee Cemetery. Janet Stout has been adding a good deal of tombstone photos there recently, with more to come. http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/michigan/mitstable.htm Click on Mecosta Co. and check out Higbee, as well as the others cemetery photos that we have online. Wheatland Township, Section 28. Additional Comments: On many sites this cemetery is spelled Wamboldt Cemetery (not sure which is correct but the sign says Wambold). Though, it is possibly named after a pioneer named Isaac Wambold b: 1824 d: 1904 I will check on this history. Wheatland Township owns and maintains this cemetery. It has a few stones that have toppled but is in good condition otherwise. I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as Olive COLESON. The photograph was taken by the Fowler View Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The photograph is dated 1899 and pictures a woman and young girl in front of a house with another woman pictured in an upstairs window. The little girl appears to be about 6 years old with the two women in their 20's to 40's. Based on limited research, I was able to locate information regarding Olive I. COLESON daughter of Ira W. & Estella COLESON. The family is traced through various census records as follows: Big Rapids, MI - 1900 census: Ira W. COLESON, age 40, born Mar 1860, married 10 years, born IL, parents born NY, a Mason Estella COLESON, wife, age 32, born Mar 1868, married 10 years, 3 children/3 living, born OH, parents born OH Elsie P. COLESON, dau, age 14, born Jan 1886, born MI, at School Ida B. COLESON, dau, age 12, born Mar 1888, born MI, at School Olive I. COLESON, dau, age 6, born June 1893, born MI, at School Robert ELLIOTT, boarder, age 50, born May 1849, born NY, parents born NY, a Carpenter Seattle, WA - 1910 census: Ira COLESON, age 50, married 25 years, born IA, parents born MI/WI, a Brick Layer Estella COLESON, wife, age 43, married 25 years, 3 children/3 living, born OH, parents born NY/OH Olive COLESON, dau, age 16, born MI Seattle, WA - 1920 census: Ira COLESON, age 59, born IL, parents born NY, a Masonry Contractor Stella COLESON, wife, age 53, born OH, parents born VA Seattle, WA - 1920 census: Olive I. COLESON, age 26, born MI, parents born IA/OH, a Stenographer Aberdeen, WA - 1920 census: Elsie COLESON, age 26, born MI, parents born IL/OH, School Board Deputy Secretary I am hoping to locate someone from Olive's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley I'm hoping to locate someone from the family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. We are pleased and excited to announce the following to our Genealogy Community: AN ALL NEW ROOTSWEB HOSTED WEBSITE WHICH WILL PROVIDE FREE ACCESS TO EVERY CEMETERY IN KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MICHIGAN! Our objective is to provide indexes of burials as well as photos and transcription records of all gravestones in Kalamazoo County. We are certain this site will become one of the premiere cemetery sites on the Internet! The project is being provided in the best interest of the Genealogy Community by a team of volunteers. We currently have collected data for over 60,000 burials in Kalamazoo County, and that data is in various stages of computerization. As each of the cemeteries is completed, it will be added to our new site where it can be freely accessed by all. Our site is now available at the URL below. Keep in mind, we are just beginning and we will continuously add each and every cemetery as we complete them. In addition, cemeteries that have been completed will be updated yearly with any new burials during the year. Our site is hosted by Rootsweb and will soon be highlighted by Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter. In addition to indexing burials we will have complete stone transcriptions, cemetery maps, cemetery photos, grave photos, printable township reports, printable cemetery reports and much more. We also have an e-mail list for those who wish to be notified as the site is updated. Please visit often. Please visit us at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mikalam2/

I would also try the Mecosta County Genealogical Society located at 424 N. Fourth in Big Rapids, just north of Recycle Mecosta Co. They would be more apt to have printed materials for research than the Historical Society. Most queries sent to the Historical Society are forwarded on to the genealogy society. The Mecosta County Genealogical Society is open on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: "jg" <lucky382001@yahoo.com> >I think if I were you I'd get in contact with the > Mecosta County Historic society before your visit and > ask what they would suggest. > I found in a BigRapids & Mecosta county directory on > Heritage Quest for 1884; D. I think if I were you I'd get in contact with the Mecosta County Historic society before your visit and ask what they would suggest. I found in a BigRapids & Mecosta county directory on Heritage Quest for 1884; D. C. Fuller was living in Millbrook but was like a city official pg 21 and P92 Mecosta county directory: Fuller D. C., Lawyer and Justice of Peace,Millbrook. Since he was a Justice of the peace and Lawyer perhaps the Historical Society has more info on him. I would also check for bordering areas as well looks like Millbrook is near Morley and Isabella County but every map I find has a typo calling Millbrook ...Millbrool so just remember it is in Mecosta county. You possibly could check on records at the BigRapids Court house also as they hold many records for Mecosta County. Hope this helps some. We hope to visit Mecosta County next month to look up family history. David Fuller lived in Millbrook when he died in 1903, and was also there when his wife Abigail died in 1883. What cemetery would they have been likely to use at that location in that period of time? Also, I found a newspaper item from March of 1913 saying that Mrs. D. C. Fuller had sold the old Milbrook House to Harvey Clark, and that it would be immediately reopened as a hotel. Does anyone know whether this house is still standing? I'd appreciate any suggestions for places we should search during our visit. Thanks! Carolyn Carson

If you haven't stopped by the MI Tombstone Project lately, you might want to visit again. We now have 813 tombstone photos for Mecosta. There are over 33,000 photos statewide. Last night I uploaded photos to Hinton and this evening another 55 to Pine Plains/Beyers Cemetery. There have been quite a few to Flake and a few to Higbee. I have a few more for Hinton and about 300 more for Pine Plains that will be going online soon. http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/michigan/mitstable.htm Jan
Hi I would like to have the obituary for Wayne M. Steffes who died at home in Morley, Mecosta County on Thursday, November 03, 2005. I do not live anywhere nearby to get the obituary. The funeral home does not have any online website and I cannot find any online website for The Pioneer newspaper. I would appreciate it very much if anyone can help me out. Thank you for your courtesies. Sincerely, Marly --------------------------------- Yahoo! FareChase - Search multiple travel sites in one click.

Mecosta County MI Archives Obituaries.....Davis, James May 28, 1872 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Laura Groom Littlekug@aol.com October 4, 2005, 10:10 am Big Rapids Magnet 6 Jun 1872 Big Rapids Magnet, Thursday, 6 Jun 1872: FATAL SHOOTING AFFRAY AT MORLEY On Thursday evening last, the usually quiet villalge of Morley was thrown into excitement by the exploits of James Davis and William N. Saulisbury, better known as "Nett" Saulisbury, which resulted in fatal injuries to the former. The facts, briefly stated, as related to us, appear to be substantially as follows: Davis, who was evidently slightly intoxicated, and somewhat quarrelsome, went into Saulisbury's saloon, and called for a glass of beer. The beer was produced, but he objected to the measure, and instead of drinking it, dashed the glass and contents on the counter. This was followed by other boisterous conduct, and Saulisbury tried to induce him to leave the room, which he refused to do - on the contrary he threatened to "thrash" Saulisbury. The latter finally ran out of doors, as he says, for the purpose of getting Davis out, expecting he would follow him, which he did. Saulisbury then tried to evade him, and went to different parts of the town for that purpose; but Davis followed him up with threats and other demonstrations of violence, such as snubbing his fist in his face, etc. Saulisbury, who is a cripple, his left arm having been disabled in the army by a gunshot wound, let fly with his right, and knocked Davis down. Following up his advantage, he soon caused Davis to cry "enough," when he immediately desisted. On regaining his feet, Davis made a rush for Saulisbury, who retreated, and called upon the by-standers to keep him off, saying he wanted no further trouble with him. But no one interfered, probably for the reason that an interference would have transfered the quarrel from Saulisbury to the person who should thus attempt to preserve order. Saulisbury, by a roundabout course, ran into his saloon and locked the door. Davis followed, and finding the door locked, went across the streed, picked up a club, and returned to the building, interpersing his proceedings with oaths and threats of violence toward Saulisbury, declaring he would "kill him". The latter warned him to keep away, that aif he did not, he would get hurt, etc. But Davis paying no attention to Saulisbury's words, broke in the front window with his club, and proceeded immediately either to climb in at the window, or reach through it and unlock the door. At this juncture, Saulisbury fired two shots from a revolver, the first sending a ball through the window into an awning post, and the second, a ball into Davis' head, entering about two inches above a line from the left eye to left ear. Davis fell in an unconscious state, and remained so till he breathed his last, which was about 24 hours afterward. Saulisbury immediataely gave himself up to Dept. Sheriff Nethaway, who brought him to Big Rapids, and lodged him in jail early on Friday morning. On Saturday forenoon, Justice Cummer commenced an inquest, the following named gentlemen being summoned as jurors, viz: E. Wood Gerrish, Thos. Cahill, John F. Cook, Samuel Burtch, Orange M. Wheeler and Shortis Mitchelson. The investigation was not concluded till Monday afternoon, the verdict of the jury being to the effect that Davis came to his death from a pistol shot fired by Saulisbury in self defense. On Tuesday morning Saulisbury was arraigned before Justice Dewey, in this city, on a charge of murder, when he waived examination, and was remanded to jail for trial at the next term of the Circuit Court. Accused is an unmarried man, about 26 or 28 years of age, and has the reputation of being quiet and peaceable, as well as sober and industrious. Deceased left a wife and one child, and with a brother, owned and carried on a large farm in the township of Deerfield, some four or five miles from the village of Morley. He is said to have been in the habit of frequently indulging in drink, and when under the influence of liquor, to have been very quarrelsome and disagreeable to get along with. As the matter will in due time, be thoroughly investigated by the Courts, we leave the subject with this naked stataement of facts, without indulging in comment one way or the other. Additional Comments: James Davis was the second husband of Mary (House) Groom. He is buried in the Quigley Cemetery next to his infant daughter.
