    1. [MIMECOST] Karcher/Oliver Descendants in Mecosta County
    2. I'm "finishing" my research on the descendants of Hiram and Nellie Bailey Karcher as well as Hiram Manily and Grace Bailey Oliver who moved from Freeport, MI to the Remus area in the early 1900s. Nellie and Grace were daughters of John Bailey and Estella Walton Bailey and were born in Campbell Township, Ionia County, MI. I have a picture of the girls as of 1903 with their first cousins at their grandfather's funeral. Grandfather was John Silas Walton, an early settler of Gaines Township, Kent County, as well as Freeport. John's grandfather was Revolutionary War soldier Silas Walton of Connecticut. I believe that most of the Oliver descendants have moved to Kent County but I know that many of the Karchers remain in the Remus area. I am in need of a few particular obituaries and death records, if anyone can help me. Needless to say, I would love to correspond with a Karcher descendant to fill in some blanks too. And, I would be very happy to send a copy of my compiled work, as it presently stands, to the Mecosta County Genealogy Society, this website, or any other interested party. 3. Hi Leah, That is another surname that I have never run across in Mecosta Co. Sorry.. I can explain the Grandmother going to school in Montcalm Co., though. They obviously lived along the edge of the county next to Montcalm Co. and she probably went to the closest school which was in Montcalm Co. Many people who lived in Millbrook township even had P.O. addresses of Lakeview and I believe they still do to this day. Lakeview is actually in Montcalm Co. 3. Hi Wanda, We are still looking for that guy. <sigh> Now, that I finally seem to be in decent health again and the weather improves, I am going to go out and walk a couple of those cemeteries that we talked about in Newyago and Osceola Counties. Have you ever tried contacting Osceola Township in Osceola Co. about the Forest Hill Cemetery? There is a Royal Hooker there, but, obviously it must be his son. (1865-1936) Same marker with Cora. Lots of Hooker burials there. Odd though, as Forest Hill is over by Evart and basically on the other side of Mecosta County from Paris, or Green Township. I believe some one recently said that the Evart Library has a map of the Forest Hill Cemetery, if you are interested in checking out that possibility. Could be that he is there as well and his stone has crumbled over the years. 3. Charles Hawkins is still in Mecosta Co. in 1884, as he shows up in the Mecosta Co. directory, but, there are two of them. One was a Charles Foster, who was a laborer in Mecosta and the other was a farmer on Section 2, of Aetna Township I show Simon Foster in the 1884 directory as a farmer on section 24 in Colfax Township. You probably have this info, but, thought I would mention it just in case. Jan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ellen Morrow" <dollym67@yahoo.com> I am still trying to find information about: Charles Hawkins, born 1845 Vermont, lived in Mecosta County and is on 1870 and 1880 census. 1900 census he was in Kent County. He had wife Lucinda (Willett), children Asa, Corintha, Charles, and Ella. Charlesdied in 1901 and is buried in Hanover Cemetery, Hanover, Jackson County, Michigan with parents Silas Emmett and Clarinda Hawkins. Charles left wife and children sometime after 1880 and may have had another family. Any information on this mystery man is appreciated. Mariah H. (Swick) Foster, born 1842 in New York and died in Mecosta County in 1926. I have marriage and death certificates, but her Father's name is given as unknown Swick. Mariah was married to Simon P. Foster and they had children Laurence Adelbert, Nellie J., Franklin, Estella, and Edith. Her Mother was Mary Rockwell and Father was unknown Swick. 3. What a great idea to do this roll call! I'm researching my Croad family who came to Mecosta co. around 1895 from the Pontypridd area of Wales. If anyone has come across this surname in Mecosta records or is connected with this family (they were the only Croads in Michigan) I'd love to exchange info. Fred Rendle Croad and his wife Mary Stokes came to the area with their ten children: Frank, John, Florence, Anna, George, Daisy, Bertha, Charles, Bessie, and William. Associated surnames include: Allen, Porter, Betser, Tennis, Barnard, Winger, Keith, Cuson, Burns, Moomey and Taylor. The family lived in Millbrook, although my great-grandmother Daisy Croad supposedly went to school in Lakeview, Montcalm co. (don't really know what that's about...). Thanks! Leah
