    3. Hi List; I am trying to contact Charles and Joan Canaan. The return email address didn't work, it keeps coming back. Please contact me as I have information and pictures for you. Chuck Townsend Clio, Michigan ICQ# 4432153 <mailto:CDT3@PERCEPTIONET.COM> -----Original Message----- From: Charles and Joan Canaan [mailto:cjcanaan@itctel.com] Sent: Thursday, November 08, 2001 12:48 AM To: cdt3@PERCEPTIONET.COM Subject: John Canaan I read with interest your listing of the descendants of John Canaan. My greatgrandfather was John Canaan, married to Sophia Perry. He lived in the Big Rapids, Michigan area. His son, my grandfather, was Arthur Ray Canaan. Sophia died quite young so Arthur was raised by his paternal grandparents. He in turn had two sons, one of which was my father. I was from a family of two boys, I had three sons, and now have three grandsons and three granddaughters. I am intereted in what you know about the family before this time. Is it true they were Irish immigrants? Has the name always been spelled this way? I don't know any Canaans except my immediate family so I am always looking for background information. Charles Canaan

    2. There is a web site called "TruthOrFiction.com" that proves to be a great resource for checking out computer scams. I refer to it everytime I get a virus warning, plea for help or anything else that smells like a hoax.

    1. Typing Help
    2. Jan Cortez
    3. Boy, you Mecosta Researchers are one awesome group. I have received numerous emails of offers of help. I sent everything to Wanda and she should have it in a few days. This one is going to take awhile because it is quite large - so have patience and given time we'll be looking at the Aetna Township Cemetery online. This would be the Morley area. I hope to have more to do soon - so those of you that did respond to help will probably be hearing from me soon. And thanks so much to all of you. Jan Mecosta County

    3. Is there anyone on the list that would be interested in doing some typing for the Mecosta County website? I have a new cemetery - that is about 1500 burials - give or take, that I need help on. Anyone, or a couple of someones able to do it in Word or Excel? I can snail mail it to you. Just coming back from vacation and am a little backed up and need some help. Thanks, Jan Mecosta County

    2. Jan Cortez
    3. Thanks to the generosity of Chuck Townsend, we have the autograph book of Sarah Vollwiler Townsend online. He not only scanned the images but also made a list of the people who signed. Thank you Chuck!!!! This has been waiting for a couple months while I got thru computer repairs. Now that I'm up and running - also expect to see soon - a new Mecosta County Photo Album going online. Jan's learned how to do the little icons and scan things. <VBG> And Tom Bennett and Chuck Townsend have both sent old pictures of the area that will make a welcome asset to the site. Once we get up and going and you see what I am doing with them - donations will be welcomed...... But do need a few days to get the album going. Okay - I'm clamping down on the jaws..... Stop in and take a look. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mimecost/ Jan Cortez Mecosta County Coordinator

    2. Mary Becker
    3. I have found the older brother of my WALSH family! I figure if I find enough stuff SOMEONE on this list will know one of them at least! John and Lena WALSH, both born in Ireland their son, William was b. Jan 1860 - listed in 1860 and 1870 census with family. Not listed with mother, a widow, in the 1880 census. 1900 Mecosta Co. Census, William WALSH b. 1860 his wife Lettie E. b. 1871 Michigan, parents b. Rhode Island Newport their children: Ellis b. 1884 (Lettie's son? - she would have been only 13... could be, probably not) Fannie E. b. 1892 Edward B. b. 1895 Helena E. b. 1896 Lora R. b. 1899 another daughter not named b. April 1900 (census taken June 2, 1900) If anyone can claim these WALSH family members, please contact me! Thanks! Mary K. Becker Corydon, IN

    1. New to list - searching for WALSH descendants
    2. Mary Becker
    3. I have tried all sorts of things - posting to numerous boards, lists, etc., but have gotten nowhere in my search of descendants of John and Leona/Lena WALSH in Mecosta Co. MI. I am hoping this list can help. John WALSH b. 1834 "L Ireland" (according to 1860 MI Census) married Lena/Leona b. c. 1838 "Antrim Ireland" ( " ") In 1860 they were living in Mecosta County Michigan - with one son, William, age 1. In the 1870 census they are listed as "WELCH" -living in the same place. In 1880 Lena is listed as a widow, with all children except William living at home. I have no further information after that, beyond finding Alfred and James (and that is an assumption) listed in the 1919-1923 Rural Directory of Mecosta Co. The children I have information on are: William b. c. 1859 (no information on him after age 12) John "Jack" b. 1860-1861 (my great-grandfather) Alfred b. 1863 (m. Rachel, both buried in Mecosta Co, MI, Stanwood Cemetery) d. ca. 1933 - ( I think they had 5 children) Elas/Elias James b. c. 1873 (m. Pearl? - possibly living in Mecosta Co. as late as 1919 - had at least 2 children) Martha Mary all born in Michigan. I have no idea whether John and Lena were married in Ireland or Michigan. I do not know when they came to US. John Sr. died between 1872 and 1880 - Lena is listed as a widow in the 1880 Michigan census. Last child b. 1873. John (Jr.) moved to Pineville, KY in the 1890's. He married Mary Lucinda Elizabeth Patterson in Pineville in 1895. They had the following children: Mary Myrtle b. ca. 1897-1898 twin baby girls who died as infants b. 1900 John Dewey Walsh (sometimes listed as Jr.) b. 1903 Frank Handley b. 1905 Emma Ethel b. 1910 Virginia b. 1912 Jesse (aka "Buster") b. 1907 - died in California ? 1950s? I am the granddaughter of John Jr who had 9 living children, including my mother, Anita Faye Walsh Evitts. Any information about the Walsh family in Mecosta Co. / Stanwood, Michigan area would be appreciated: How to find documentation of the death of John or Lena, Lena's maiden name, immigration records or information, etc. I have a suspicion that Lena remarried after 1880, but can find no proof. I think that Jack did not have any contact with his family in Michigan after coming to Kentucky. Family legend has it that the two sisters, Mary and Martha, were kind to Jack's children when they were contacted. Any help anyone can give me on how to go about finding the descendants of any of these Walshes - especially Alfred and Rachel or James and Pearl - since I believe they continued to live there, would be wonderful. Would it be feasible to put a classified in a local paper - is there one? If anyone out there knows someone named Walsh whose family has lived in Mecosta Co. for over 100 years, please pass this info along. Since my great grandfather did not have any contact with his family after leaving in the 1890s (and by all accounts did not even talk about them), I'd love to hear from someone who might know more about the family history. Sorry for such a long note my first time out. This has been a long search! I have high hopes for this list! :) Thanks a bunch - looking forward to hearing from you. Mary K. Becker Corydon, IN
