Just an FYI to let you know that I have opened the gateway from the MI Archives new Auto-Upload feature to the Mecosta County Mailing list. Any time that obits, bios, cemetery photos, etc. are Auto-uploaded to Mecosta Co. thru the New Form in the MI Archives, a copy of and links to will automatically come to this list. If you'd like to check out our new forms system, please stop by the form pages and take a peek at how its done. http://www.genrecords.org/mifiles/ I hope that as time passes, this feature will prove of benefit to all of you in your research. For those of you who would like to see the Auto-Uploads - State Wide, there is a new mailing list for that purpose: http://www.genrecords.org/mifiles/lists.html Warning - mail could be heavy at times, depending on the amount of state wide uploads. Greetings: This is my contribution to the Brick Wall Hall of Fame. Richard James HUGHES is said to be born ca. 1880 in Ohio. Came to Mecosta County at an unknown date. At the age of 21 years, Richard married Artilissie Lickert, aged 14 years. The family shows up in the 1910 and 1920 census, then disappears after 1920. Richard and Artilissie have three children: Theodore, Leroy and Reva F., my grandmother. Might anyone on the list have any reference books or material mentioning this family? To this point I have been unable to trace HUGHES into Ohio. As always, much appreciation for any help, info or suggestions. Regards, Micheal Mathews Mathews, Hughes, Channell, Hathaway

Mr. Caldwell, I believe that you know that there is a Genealogical Society in Mecosta County. You have written several letters there, to Mecosta County, to this list, the Mecosta County list and to me. I have answered every question that I could for you via the email that I sent you back. The only other thing that could be done is for someone to go to the library, since Mecosta Co does not have record of the death, spend a few hours and research for you thru newspaper microfilm. This is something that is going to be discussed at tonights meeting. We meet every two months. I will get back with you on the costs for doing that research. I hope this answers your questions. This question has to do with Mecosta County genealogy and a possible newspaper article after 12/24/1872 death. Is there a Genealogical Society there that covers Mecosta? My great great grandfather John Caldwell from Ireland died in Big Rapids on 24 December 1872. At the time he lived in Litchfield, Hillsdale County. His 2 eldest sons (Thomas & John Jr) had homesteads in Missaukee County near Lake City. Otherwise there is no connection of my Caldwell family to Big Rapids or the Mecosta County area. I am trying to figure why my great great grandfather was in Big Rapids at the time; other than perhaps going back to Hillsdale County after visiting his sons in the Lake City area of Missaukee County. Would it have had better medical facilities (e.g. a hospital)? Can NOT find where John Caldwell is buried. Apparently he is buried in Big Rapids someplace; that I have not been able to find so far... The Michigan death index GENDIS does shows his death record. What cemetery would be a logical choice? Is it on-line? Would someone be able to look up in the logical cemetery to find John Caldwell if he is in fact buried in Big Rapids? Would there be an obituary on John Caldwell in the Big Rapids local newspaper of the time of 1872? Would there be an article in the local newspaper shortly after December 24th 1872 about "a stranger that died in Big Rapids" or perhaps about a strange that died while arriving on the train from Lake City. The son that would probably be with John would be Thomas. What hospital was going at this time? Would there be archived doctor's records? All my other Caldwell relatives are buried in the Caldwell cemetery in Missaukee County (Arlene); EXCEPT for my great great grandfather John Caldwell (Sr). Need help in finding where he is buried (Michigan someplace unknown; maybe in Big Rapids; maybe near here). He lived in Jonesville/Litchfield in Hillsdale County at the time, however he is NOT buried anywhere in the Hillsdale County. His wife Jane (Thompson) Caldwell however is in the Sand Creek cemetery in Hillsdale County. The family lived in the Jonesville / Litchfield area; Hillsdale County, Michigan. Thanks for any help or ideas.... Doug Caldwell --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Meet the all-new My Yahoo! Try it today!
My great great grandfather died December 24, 1872. He normally lived in Hillsdale County, however he was visiting his sons in Missaukee County and was traveling back home when he got sick and died in Big Rapids. Normally he had no connections to Mecosta County. The death occured Christmas Eve in Big Rapids MI. Is there an "official" place on a death record or death certificate where it is marked if a body is "shipped" away from the County where the death took place if that is what happened and requested by relatives - OR - if the body was kept through the winter in a local vault if the death happened Christmas Eve. The death record shows it was recorded July the next year. - OR - do you have to ask the County Clerk specifically on this? Can NOT find a burial of him in Missaukee or Hillsdale Co. Maybe he WAS buried in the Big Rapids area. How to find? Doug Caldwell --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - now with 250MB free storage. Learn more.

I have received previous copies of this email. Before everyone gets all bent out of shape over this, I would suggest some research into the situation. It is my understanding that senate bill S 2845 is to reform the intelligence community and intelligence related activities of the United States government. So do you want more terrorism or do you want to see birth certificates. And secondly, we have not been able to access Michigan birth records for how many years? So before this email takes on a life of its own, check into it, see what it is about. I also believe the bill has already passed and been made into law. Don't just be one of the pack and follow along, get out there and lead the way. gypsy -----Original Message----- From: mrjcbs@juno.com [mailto:mrjcbs@juno.com] Sent: Thursday, December 16, 2004 9:27 AM To: MIMECOST-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MIMECOST] Fw: FW: [FHCPatrons] Law Impacting Family Historians This looks interesting. mrj --------- Forwarded message ---------- To: "Dick & Sarah Jacobs (E-mail)" <MRJCBS@juno.com>, Date: Fri, 10 Dec 2004 14:04:57 -0500 Subject: FW: [FHCPatrons] Law Impacting Family Historians Looks like "opposition" is once again attempting to thwart putting families together again. -----Original Message----- From: swt39 [mailto:swt39@comcast.net] Sent: Friday, December 10, 2004 1:26 PM To: FHC Patrons List Subject: [FHCPatrons] Law Impacting Family Historians New Bill Will Close Records to Genealogists HR10 has passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now part of S.2845. The family was living in Arcadia, MI during the 1880 census including Joshua age 58 b. in New Brunswick and his wife Margaret age 57 also born in New Brunswick. Four children were living with them at the time including, Ensign age 28 b. in WI, Daniel age 21, Fred age 14, and Bernice age 12, the youngest three all born in MI. I also find Lilly M. MALLISON age 14 b. in WI the daughter of Lafayette & Josephene MALLISON included in the 1880 census living in Onekama, MI. Lafayette is age 43 b. in NY and his wife Josephene age 35 b. in MI. In addition to Lilly another daughter Ida G. age 11 b. in MI is also living with the family in 1880. I also find evidence of Howard Douglas BRADFORD married to Mary Arilla CHAPIN on 5 April 1876 at Manistee, MI. Howard was 22 years old at that time and Mary was just 17 years of age. Howard's place of birth was recorded as WI. The two were living in Arcadia, MI during the 1880 census with Mary's name noted as "Orilla" BRADFORD age 22 b. in WI. The couple had a son Ray BRADFORD age 2 b. in MI. Howard listed his father as born in New Brunswick suggesting that he was also connected to the Joshua BRADFORD Family, as either a son or nephew possibly. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that these wonderful old family photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
If I was able to spend Thanksgiving with one ancestor from Mecosta Co., she would be DELIA (JAY) WADSWORTH), wife of William Wadsworth. They lived in Section 32 of Mecosta Township. She was a sister of my Great Grandmother and lived in Mecosta County beginning about 1868 and in the area until her death in 1910. She might also have at her house for Thanksgiving her parents, William & Permelia Jay and sister, Emma (Jay) Hall who lived near them, but in Newaygo County. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? I'd love to find out my great-grandmother's story. The information that I have is that she was born in Ontario, Canada on 26 April 1958 as Margaret BEAMER. She was later adopted by James and Barbara MILLER of Mecosta County. She married Lewis ANNIS on 4 July 1874 (ceremony performed by John SNOW (?), Justice of the Peace; witnessed by Henrietta ANNIS and Phebee PUTNUM). Altough she was barely 16 at the time of her marriage (Lewis was 6 1/2 years older); their first chile wasn't born until exactly 4 years after the wedding. She died of "exhaustion" on 24 July 1923 in Greenville, Montcalm County. During the many moves that my husband and I have made during his years in the Air Force, the obituary that I once had for Margaret that listed her birth siblings has been packed in a box somewhere that we have yet to find. Someday . . . .
my one ancestor would be mariana gotz Smith. she was born in france her passport stamped in her bible. with it a note, whomever reads this note i will never die. And the first 4 leaf clover she found when she came her. I found the bible with the note. i assume the first person in 100 years since she sailed to canada in 1850 and came to mecosta county around 1869. I assumed by the note that she meant her memory will live on. that is what got me started in to family research over 25 years ago. Ok now everyone can laugh, How she is my favortie ancestor. one whom i have never met. bye. happy thanksgiving everyone
You know I was looking for Hungerford Cemetery that I walked in 2000. Not sure whether I ever announced that to this list or not, but apparantly I never connected it to the Newaygo County site. Just connected it. The reason I mention it, is that many of the people buried there lived in Big Rapids, but some were in Newaygo and some were in Mecosta County, so some of you may want to go check that out for ancestors. http://www.rootsweb.com/~minewayg/hungerford.html Sometimes I wonder about myself. <sigh> Jan
Hi Lynne, I think that you were the one I was talking to some time ago. Would it have been Happy Walker, that I found in the old funeral home records, as the second wife? I went out to Davenport Cemetery a few days ago, forgot my camera, but, did record half of the old section of the cemetery. Knew there was some name I should have been looking for, but couldn't remember. Anyway, just looked thru what I recorded and no Walker's there. <sigh> Wish he had been one of the one's I recorded. Send me an email after the Thanksgiving weekend to remind me and I'll call the twp clerk out there and see if she has him listed in her records.
