    3. Hi everyone! Sorry to start another thread of messages so close to a Surname Shout Out but with the lists being down the first part of the year it threw my scheduling off. Hope you don't mind... With this being the Memorial Day Weekend, I thought it would it be interesting to post one ancestor we have in our family trees who served in one of the many wars and battles we fought in US History. Obviously it has to be an ancestor from this county. :) Give a brief biography of that person including the unit and war he or she was in, a POW, injuries, plus the usual genealogical stuff. Thanks in advance and have a safe weekend! Rick B Admin

    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Rose CARTIER which was taken in 1883 at the J. G. Hill Studio in Monroe, MI. Rose appears to be in her 20's at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Rose and her family: Rosalia "Rose" or "Rosa" CARTIER was b. 31 Mar 1861 in Ludington or Manistee, MI to parents Antoine Ephraim or Ephrem CARTIER (1836-1910) and Elizabeth Ann E. "Eliza" AYERS (1842-1920). Rose was one of 9 children born to this couple including, Rose; Louis A.; Warren Antoine; Ida Jane; George Robinson; Dezera or Desire or Desera Ephraim; William; Charles Earnest; and Eliza CARTIER, all born between 1861 and 1891. Rose married Charles W. SOPER (b. 1860) and they had a son, George W. A. SOPER (1887-1897). I am hoping to locate someone from Rose's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of her family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [MIMASON] Family name Kehn or Keng or Kine or Keene puzzle
    2. Family name Kehn or Keng or Kine or Keene puzzle One of the big puzzles in the Classen family is Minnie Claasen’s maiden name. According to her death certificate, her father was Frederick Keng. That was reported by her son, Willys Classen. Willys did not know the name of Minnie’s mother. On the 1870 Census, there is a Frederick and Gusta Kehn that have a Joseph and Minnie living with them in Pere Marquette, MI. Finally, Minnie’s maiden name is shown as Kine and Keene in the marriage records of two of her children. So, was it Keng, Kehn, Kine, Keene, Keine or possibly some other name? I have included some clues below. Minnie’s children Ed and Sarah’s marriage records show Minnie’s maiden name as Kine and Keene: Michigan Marriages, 1868-1925 Groom's Name: Edward Classen Groom's Age: 21 years Groom's Birth Date: 1883 Groom's Birthplace: Ludington Bride's Name: Roselina Bentz Bride's Age: 19 years Bride's Birth Date: 1885 Bride's Birthplace: Ludington Marriage Date: 17 Sep 1904 Marriage Place: Ludington, Mason, Michigan Groom's Father: M. Yet, there is no proof that Wilhelmina was Minnie’s first name. I have not yet found a birth record for Minnie, but the Mormon Church is a good resource for German church records. I have included texts of two near misses below. They are both too early for Minnie’s birth, which was in 1852. >From www.Wikipedia.org: As a first name, Minnie is a diminutive of Wilhelmina, Hermione, Mary or Amelia Wilhelmina (alternately spelled Wilhelmine) is a female given name, originating from the German language and meaning "protector". Wilma, Willa, and Mina are short forms of the name, and male versions include William and Wilhelm. >From www.familysearch.org: Germany Births and Baptisms, 1558-1898 for Sophia Julie Wilhelmina Keine Name: Sophia Julie Wilhelmina Keine Gender: Female Baptism/Christening Date: 17 Jun 1849 Baptism/Christening Place: KATHOLISCH, ISERLOHN, WESTFALEN, PRUSSIA Father's Name: Friedrich Keine Father's Birthplace: Father's Age: Mother's Name: Carolina Reichardt Mother's Birthplace: Mother's Age: Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C96993-2 System Origin: Germany-ODM Source Film Number: 949733 Germany Births and Baptisms, 1558-1898 for Sophia Louise Wilhelmine Keine Name: Sophia Louise Wilhelmine Keine Gender: Female Baptism/Christening Date: 21 Dec 1845 Baptism/Christening Place: Iserlohn, Westfalen, Preußen, Germany Birth Date: 02 Dec 1845 Father's Name: Friedrich Keine Mother's Name: Elisabeth Imschlak Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C96991-5 System Origin: Germany-EASy Source Film Number: 595582 In the 1870 census, the following four people appear together in Pere Marquette, Michigan. Despite the misspellings, I think this is Joseph and Minnie Classen along with her parents. The spelling for her fathers name is “Kehn,” but considering the other misspellings, who knows? I wonder if the Classens and Kehns didn’t yet speak English very well yet and the census taker just wrote down what they heard. 1870 United States Federal Census Name: Frederick Kehn Birth Year: abt 1818 Age in 1870: 52 Birthplace: Prussia Home in 1870: Pere Marquette, Mason, Michigan Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Ludington 1870 United States Federal Census Name: Gusta Kehn Birth Year: abt 1828 Age in 1870: 42 Birthplace: Prussia Home in 1870: Pere Marquette, Mason, Michigan Race: White Gender: Female Post Office: Ludington 1870 United States Federal Census Name: Joseph Glassaco Birth Year: abt 1848 Age in 1870: 22 Birthplace: Prussia Home in 1870: Pere Marquette, Mason, Michigan Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Ludington 1870 United States Federal Census Name: Minnie Glassaco Birth Year: abt 1851 Age in 1870: 19 Birthplace: Prussia Home in 1870: Pere Marquette, Mason, Michigan Race: White Gender: Female Post Office: Ludington So what would it take to solve this puzzle? An obituary for Fred or Gusta Kehn would help, or maybe finding Kehn graves right next to Classen graves in a Mason County cemetery. I don’t think it would be worth it to pursue a death certificate for Fred Kehn unless his death date and correct spelling of his name were known. Is there any Classen or Kehn family out there that can help solve this puzzle? Mitch Trier [email protected]

    3. Hi there, a couple websites for you to look at. Our local paper has some online here http://www.google.com/archivesearch/advanced_search Remember to check several spellings too as there are lots of typos in spelling. Also put Lundington Daily News as the paper listing, notice the wrong spelling an error on Google that hasn't been fixed yet. Also if you haven't tried yet: www.seekingmichigan.org a couple of deaths from the www.ludingtonmichigan.net site. These 3 are at Lakeview Cemetery. No Kehn listed. Classen/Edward Wiliam// Plot # 03-011-010-12-01 Died: 05/23/1969 Age at death: 86 yrs Classen/Harold// Plot # 03-011-010-10-01 Died: 04/15/1989 Buried: 04/20/89 age at death: 84 yrs. Classen/Rosaline// Plot # 03-011-010-11-01 Died: 10/19/1959 age at death: 73 yrs. Also note, there are alot of Clausen if there might have been a spelling change at all? There is a Frederick Kehn in the 1870 Census Pere Marquette Twp., Mason Co., Michigan Frederick is age 52 yrs., born Prussia Gusta, age 42 yrs., b. Prussia Joseph Glassaro (sp?), age 22 yrs., born Prussia Minnie Glassaro (sp?), age 19 yrs. born Prussia Several Classen in Mason Co. census, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920. should be able to find some obits on the google site also. I live in mason Co., so let me know if you have anything you need to look up, when the snow melts I can get headstone photos etc. Beth ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 02, 2011 2:25 PM Subject: [MIMASON] Mathias "Joseph" & Minnie (Kehn) Classen Ludington, Mason,Co, MI > > My wife’s grandmother was Rose (Classen) Sargeant who was bon in > Ludington, Mason Co, MI. 3. June, just sifting through some old emails. I am guessing that you are looking for the Paulina Stearns Hospital. It is actually still standing although, the original hospital was inside Justus & Paulina's home which was across the street, that home has since been torn down. It is located next to Dow Chemical (just sold now Oxichem??) The Hospital did house some of the Govt. offices were there for a while but now it is empty and just sold at auction. Not sure what will become of it, some have mentioned condos? Others have said the man who purchased it really wants to keep the building and refurbish it into condos instead of tearing it down, which would be awesome! Can take a current photo of it if you are interested... 1. [MIMASON] BALL Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Aaron E. BALL which was taken at the Mrs. C. M. Hellyer's Studio in Mason, Michigan. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's with Aaron likely in his teens at the time. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Aaron and his family: Aaron Elkanah BALL b. 8 Jun 1858 in Mason Co. MI to parents Dr. Alexander Rawson BALL (b. 10 or 19 Oct 1822 in Jefferson Co. NY) and Delilah WELD (b. 16 Dec 1820 near Halcottsville, NY). The couple had a total of 10 children including, Warren Weld; Eunice; Hannah Belle; Alexander Rawson; Delilah; Mary; Aaron Elkanah; Martha; Fanny Estella; and Maude BALL all born between 1848 and 1864. Aaron married Amelia GERNER on 15 Oct 1882 in Iroquois, Dakota Territory and together they had 5 children including, Alexander Rawson; Warren Weld; Vera June; Mitchell Gerner; and Winifred BALL all born between 1883 and 1891 in SD except for the last child who was born in Chicago, IL.
