William Richards b abt 1838ish, lived in Phoenix, Houghton Co., MI. Before coming to the U.S. from Cornwall, he married Susan Nichols, b abt 1847. (Her mother's name was Elizabeth ?, father's name unknown) Their children were born in Michigan. They had Susan Elizabeth "Bessie", 1867-1887 m William John Thomas Mabel Grisilda, Feb 1869-? m William bouchard & a Kevorn William H., 1871 - 1913 Andrew, 1874-? Ellen Ann, Jan 5 1876-Jan 22 1959 m Philip John Verran & Wm Hage Thomas, 1878-?. Sometime after the death of Susan Nichols, which occurred on Jan 23, 1881, he moved his family to Negaunee, MI., and we understand that he remarried, but we don't know who. Ellen Ann Richards, my gr grandmother, was only 5 when her mother died. Ellen Ann grew up and married Philip Verran. They divorced when my grandmother was a tiny baby and Ellen was forced to put her chidren up for adoption. Their older daughter, Ruby, was legally adopted to a family, but Philip's father, William Verran, who was a prominent judge in Negaunee, MI, took my grandmother and raised her as his own. She was 6 weeks old. Because of this, she never knew her maternal side. She saw her mother for the 1st time at the dime store when she was about 7. Someone pointed her out and said... there is your mother. My grandmother, while in school, had a girl come up to her and tell her that they were related... my grandmother didn't believe it and the girl said, yes... my mother married your grandfather, William Richards.
