Does anyone have any information on a group called the Temple of Honor and Temperance? I have a picture of a group of men at the Grand Temple of Honor and Temperance of the State of Michigan, Fifteenth Annual Session, Ishpeming, Michigan June 26-27, 1908. Recognize some names, Joseph Pryor, Henry Curtis, Gus Donald, Wm Eddy, George Johns, Ben Orchard, that I think were from the Calumet area. Ernie
Hi, I wonder if anyone could tell me about Rector Robert Wood? What church he belonged to in the years between 1887 and 1900. He performed the marriage service for my Great Grandparents John Flory and Nellie Davey in Negaunee and also for George Flory and Catherine Davey England. Have been trying to contact the St. John's Episcopal Church in Negaunee and no one is there. I thought maybe he was the Minister there. Thank you, Marilyn

I know we all want to do our genealogy - but I need to familiarize those new to the lists with what our policies are. Please have patience with me. Some of you know me as I have been the list administrator for several years. Others do not - as I have just taken over a couple of the lists in the last few months. My name is Jan Cortez and I have been doing genealogy websites and mailing lists for a couple of years now. I actually like to be very informal and not bother you in any way. Hello, I'm looking for burial information re: my g-grandparents, James E. WILLIAMS (d. bef. 1911) and Margaret Jane WHITE WILLIAMS (d. abt. 1925). My aunt told me that they were Episcopalian and were bur. in Negaunee. Two months ago, I wrote to St. John's Episcopal Church, Negaunee, asking for bur. info. I haven't heard anything. Does anybody on the list have access to Episcopalian bur. records from the Negaunee area? Also, I read with interest Ernie's message which included "...The 1900 census shows them living on Barn Street at the Jackson Mine Location in Negaunee..." The 1900 Soundex lists a Barn Street residence for my WEBB g-grandparents. My g-grandfather, James WEBB, and his 5 sons (John, James, Arthur, Fred, Russell) all worked for the Jackson Mine. I would also be very interested in employment records and early pictures of Negaunee. Best Regards Sally BOLSTER HOLCOMBE holcombejr@mindspring.com Researching in the Upper Peninsula: DAVEY, EDDY, EDWARDS, POLKINGHORN, SATTERTHWAITE, WEBB, WHITE, WILLIAMS, WOLFE
Marilyn and others: I too am interested in any books or employment records for the Negaunee area. My g.grandparents Vincent migrated to the Forsyth Township ( Gwynn ) area around 1880. Their oldest son was killed by an air blast at the Lake Superior Mine on 1 July, 1899. The 1900 census shows them living on Barn Street at the Jackskon Mine Location in Negaunee. By 1905 they are at the Wolverine Mine Location in the Copper Country. Ernie Orchard
Hi, I am researching the name Fluhrer/Flory from the Negaunee. My Great Great Grandfather John M. Fluhrer/Flory was from Bavaria and settled in Negaunee between 1859 and 1860. The census shows the names Flora, Floray and then Flory. According to his daughter Barbara Kellan obit he worked for the Jackson Mine Company at one time and was the first man to haul iron ore between Negaunee and Marquette. Is there any books out there about early settlers in the Negaunee area that might list family names? Also is there any way of checking Jackson Mine records for his employment? Children are: Barbara born July 28, 1851 in Eagle Harbor, Mi, Caroline born Jan. 18, 1854 in Cleveland Ohio, John M born June 12, 1859 in Eagle Harbor, Mi, George born April 17, 1862 in Negaunee. In the 1870 census it shows John M. Floray as a saloon keeper. Is there anyway of knowing which saloon he was working at? Thank you, Marilyn

I don't know for sure, but I would try Peter White Public Library or the Marquette County Historical Society (Longyear Research Library). Both are located on Front Street in Marquette. They also both have websites. My surnames listed above. In addition to the other mining locations and addresses given on past mailings, you might want to try the IRON COUNTY MUSEUM in Caspian. It has a wonderful outdoor museum, plus a display that you might want to allow several hours to see. Should you want to research, in addition to the information on their 'display boards' you should contact them ahead of time. Also, Seasons are important in the North! COLD is a factor! Try them at their website (please use your own search engine to find them) and should it fail, please WRITE. I know that if the museum is closed, the mail will get through to the proper people. Remember too, Marquette County was SPLIT up and IRON was created as part of the split. Good luck to all. Hello list, I am new to the list. And I am looking for any information on the Corrette surname. I know that there are relatives still living in the Marguette and Iron Mountain area. I have just started my research and have found the original immigrant, Telesphore Joseph Corrette born 1856 in Canada Immigrated here in 1880. He met Mathilda LaJeunesse (after arriving here I believe) and they married and had 7 children I believe. We are descendants of Wilford. If anyone that has a connection, or that has any ideas on were I could go from now, would like I would love to hear from you. Thanks in advance. Star Michigan USA

William Richards b abt 1838ish, lived in Phoenix, Houghton Co., MI. Before coming to the U.S. from Cornwall, he married Susan Nichols, b abt 1847. (Her mother's name was Elizabeth ?, father's name unknown) Their children were born in Michigan. They had Susan Elizabeth "Bessie", 1867-1887 m William John Thomas Mabel Grisilda, Feb 1869-? m William bouchard & a Kevorn William H., 1871 - 1913 Andrew, 1874-? Ellen Ann, Jan 5 1876-Jan 22 1959 m Philip John Verran & Wm Hage Thomas, 1878-?. Sometime after the death of Susan Nichols, which occurred on Jan 23, 1881, he moved his family to Negaunee, MI., and we understand that he remarried, but we don't know who. Ellen Ann Richards, my gr grandmother, was only 5 when her mother died. Ellen Ann grew up and married Philip Verran. They divorced when my grandmother was a tiny baby and Ellen was forced to put her chidren up for adoption. Their older daughter, Ruby, was legally adopted to a family, but Philip's father, William Verran, who was a prominent judge in Negaunee, MI, took my grandmother and raised her as his own. She was 6 weeks old. Because of this, she never knew her maternal side. She saw her mother for the 1st time at the dime store when she was about 7. Someone pointed her out and said... there is your mother. My grandmother, while in school, had a girl come up to her and tell her that they were related... my grandmother didn't believe it and the girl said, yes... my mother married your grandfather, William Richards. Does anyone on this list know of this family? Joanne Morgan in Kansas City, MO.
