I just found out that the History of Manistee County book is now published as a single county book (reprint), and is available from Higginson Books. HISTORY OF MANISTEE COUNTY, with Illustrations & Biographical Sketches of some of its Prominent Men & Pioneers. 154p. (H.R. Page & Co.;1882) 1994. $25.00 http://www.higginsonbooks.com/mitomi.htm This isn't quite as nice of an edition as the one that was up for auction, but should be the same content. The other version contained Manistee, Mason & Oceana Counties, and was bound in Red leather with gold embossing. Hello, In the last few days there have been several emails in regard to the fires in Manistee and when they took place here is a site worth looking at: <A HREF="http://www.westshorepub.com/primetime/lib/nov97p/bookreview.html"> "Michigan on Fire"</A> More sites worth looking at would be <A HREF="http://resources.rootsweb.com/usa/MI/Manistee/">Manistee Co. Could you check on George Beckwith died 1968, and his wife Margaret. She has two other husbands buried with her, one named Arthur Miller. Is it possible that they would have obits on these people there? George was my paternal grandfather, and Arthur was my maternal ggtuncle. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Margaret died a week after George and he was cremated and placed inside her coffin, while her last two husbands were buried each side of her. Warm Regards, June
If you live in MI and can get to Manistee to the Historical Museum, they have a card index that includes every name on all readable headstones in cemeteries in Manistee County. If you can't get there you might also try calling them and see if someone can look it up for you (don't know how much of this they do). Their phone number is (616) 723-5531. I don't know the particulars about the fire, but if you email your GGGrandfather's date of death to me, I can see if there is a death return at the Library of MI tomorrow (Sat.) when I go there to do some genealogy research. I can at least write down the information I find and email it to you. Maybe there is a record filed in Lansing that you could order. In case anyone is interested, there is a copy of the same book I transcribed for the Manistee County website up for bids at the e-Bay auction site. This is the History of Manistee, Mason & Oceana Counties, Michigan, Illustrated by H.R. Page & Co., Chicago, 1882. Current price about $49.00. I've been told this book sells often for over $100.00 at book shops. This auction ends tomorrow. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=568428300 I'm not connected in any way with this auction, just thought I'd pass the info on to those interested in Manistee County history. So the upshot is: the research required is not worth the results. As for the Declaration of Intent (the first stage of naturalization), the only information I've seen on them is the person's signature or mark. What they signed is a form showing only that they renounce the [fill-in-the-blank], e.g., the King of Norway and Sweden, or the Head Honcho of Outer Slobbovia. There's nothing telling what town they came from, when they landed, or what ship they came on. Because my opinion is that look-ups in these records, at least for Manistee County, are not worth my trouble, I have not volunteered to do it. Good luck otherwise, Carol S.
Is there anyone in Manistee that will do lookups of Naturalization records? Don J. > > Subject: [[MIMANIST]] Re: Manistee Co. I believe one can call or write the court house and they will check for naturalization papers. Jerry
Margaret, I found my GGrandfather's intent paper at the Manistee County courthouse. Jerry Dominski
Would you happen to know if the Manistee papers contain Naturalization records? Or if they contain marriage licenses for the year 1859? Hi list, I've noticed some posting that have gone through about the above. I visited the courthouse last summer and I was told that the naturalization papers were burned in a courthouse fire...does anyone know anything different? I'm looking for info on some of my husband's relatives, last names being QUEIL and BRUESCH both from Germany. Thank you, Iris Peppers
All of the Manistee Papers are microfilmed and I am reasonably sure that they go through those years. Available on inter-library loan and are at the Library of MI. A wealth of information. Brethren is not very big so by checking the cemetery atlas you could write to the sextons for a precise date. Or write to Manistee for a vital record.
