The library has been in the process of creating this index for the past several months. At present, we have completed 54% of the county, including Chesterfield, and our work to date is searchable online. While we acknowledge the wonderful work that Ancestry has done in indexing the state of Michigan, we feel that we offer a superior product for Macomb County because our indexers are local people who have years of experience working with Macomb County records, and they recognize the local surnames. In addition, we use a variety of contemporary historical sources to verify surname spellings when they are in doubt. When we complete our indexing phase, we will then Soundex code every entry and offer a Soundex browse search which will provide another tool for researchers seeking surnames with multiple spelling variations or frequent misspellings.
