A tombstone was recently found on property in Chesterfield Twp. during some landscaping. No surname. Of course we would like to identify the stone (no surname) and find out where it came from. The person would also like suggestions on what to do with the stone. Any suggestions, ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. The stone reads Died Oct 21 1861 Aged 21 years 11 mos & 1(or possibly 4) day
The first thing I would do is take a look at the area the headstone was found in and see if it is possible to figure out whose farm it came from, then work backwards from there. There are still enough old farmers around that someone should be able to come up with a name of some sort to put with the area. (Not that my grandpa would necessarily know anything, but he has more connections than an Edison pole.) Then track backwards through deeds. That would help narrow down a census search.
