This means that variations of names, spellings, and dates of birth will occur in the index. We will not be "correcting" or altering this information in any way, as it would be irresponsible custodianship of the historic record to change its original form. We understand that some of you may find a birth date or other information that does not jibe with your personal family records or other documents you may have in your possession. This phenomenon is typical of genealogical research; we often find records with conflicting or variant information. That is part of the research process. With respect to draft and military records in particular, it is not unusual to see a birth date "fudged" by a year; often the person was lying about his age to get in, or lying to stay out! For the greatest success in using our index, we recommend that you search all variant spellings/misspellings of the surname you seek, and evaluate all information you find in the index in light of other family records you may hold.
