Mt Clemens Daily Leader, Feb 3, 1934 Mrs. Linus Humphrey, 60, of 120 North Broadway succumbed to a heart attack yesterday at a local hospital. Surviving are the widower, who is a patient at the same hospital; two sons, Joseph & Roy Humphrey of Mt. Clemens and a daughter Mrs. Joseph Meloche of St. Clair Shores. Two brothers and a sister, George and Theodore Meloche (sic) and Mrs. Elizabeth Wolvin reside in Grosse Pointe Farms. Born in Mt. Clemens, Mrs. Humphrey had lived her 60 years here and was a member of St. Peter's church. Mr. Humphrey for a number of years was engineer at the Medea bathhouse. Funeral arrangements have not yet been arranged. Mt Clemens Daily Leader, Feb 12 1934 L Joseph Humphrey of this city has received word of the death Saturday of his father Linus Humphrey in Grand Rapids, where he was taken two weeks ago, following the death of his wife, Mrs. Agnes Humphrey. Mr. Humphrey was a fireman at the Medea bath house for many years. He is survived by two sons, Roy and Joseph and a sister Mrs. Barney Melosche, of Grosse Pointe. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Agnes, but not Linus, is found in the St. Peter Burial records, but I did not find a tombstone for her when I read the cemetery. Mike - what is your e-mail address, I have 2 for you and not sure which one is the current one.
Hi List, Is anyone researching the MARTIN SACHS (SOCKS) family that lived in Warren Township in 1870? He probably connects to the PETER SACHS (SOCKS) family that is also found in Warren Twp. at that time. I just received my great grandfathers civil war pension file. MARTIN SACHS filled out a general affidavit on behalf of my great grandmother stating he was married to my great grandfathers sister. From the census I learned this sister was MARIA (FOSTER) SACHS. They were still living in Warren Twp. in 1900 In that census it states that Martin was born Nov. 1840 - Germany and Maria was born April 1841 in England. By the way, my great grandfather was THOMAS FOSTER and his wife was ANNIE CHURCHILL. They resided in Mt. Clemens. Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone? Thanks Terri
Boy that takes me back.............. Long, long ago my husband and I used to drive out to a small lake named Secord Lake & picnic there. This was in the mid 70's. It was located somewhere between 30 & 36 Mile Rds., and between Dequindre and Van Dyke. Near the Ford testing grounds. This would be in northen Macomb County, I think. Barbara
Margaret: Michigan Place Names by Romig lists the following: Secord, in Gladwin Co., named in 1864 after a Canadian, Marcel Secord who settled there, built a log house & provided meals & lodging for early lumberman. Secord Twp also in that County established 1912 and there was a rural post office there called Secord which opened in 1908. Secord's, a flag station on the Michigan Central RR, in Canton Twp. Wayne Co, in 1872. I have never heard of a place called Secord in the Romeo or Macomb Co. area. Ann
Looking for a small town named secord, it should be near Romeo MI. Thanks from Port Austin MI

Hi List, Do anyone have the Census Index for the year 1920 Malcomb County? I sure would like for someone to look up the Eldred and Curtis names for me. I am in Alabama and can't find any census index anywhere. I am sure having a hard time tracking my Eldred and Curtis family, since I don't remember them. I never go to meet any of my Curtis Family since my grandmother Irene Curtis Eldred died three weeks after my father was born. I sure would appreciate it very much. Thanks Rhonda Eldred

I have a photo of a class at the Clay St School, Richmond, MI about 1896. Names on the back include: Nell Hodges, Willie Macklem, John Goddar, Dallas McKay, Myrtle Randall, Charles Goodar, Wm Jewell, Ethel Randall, Henery Jewell, Ana Macklem, Gertrude Connor, Edward Fuller, Della Randall, Della Robinson, Arthur Randall, Hugh McKay, Lydia Macklem, Harley Jewell, D. S. McKay, and Ross Goodar. Does anyone have a photo of the Clay St. School? Thanks, Ty Curtis
I read in one of the old Macomb County History books about an old Arba Smith school where someone was supposed to speak--a politician or someone, not too sure who it was to be. I am not interested in the speaker as much as I am interested in the school itself because my ancestor, Arba Smith, was a pioneer of Washington Twp. He was a lumberman and settled there in 1832 and possibly even earlier in the mid 1820's. His wife was Mary Hall, dau. of Hannah Hubbard and Seth Hall. They are buried in the cemetery on Mound Rd. in Washington Twp. If anyone has any knowledge of the old schoolhouses during that time period, I would appreciate hearing from you. Arba Smith and his sons, Arba, James, Calvin, William, etc. were listed as students in a Macomb Co. History book, also. Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions. Diane
Ann, Do you have any information on the Macomb County Genealogy Group you could forward? I am new to genealogy and live in Macomb County and am interested in the group. Thanks for any info. The following is a letter I received from Pat Ibbotson, editor of the DSGR (Detroit Society for Genealogical Research). For you that are not familiar with this excellent publication - you should be as it is source of much unpublished material from the Burton Collection & elsewhere, for the Detroit area (including Macomb Co) as well as Michigan statewide. Mary Lou Duncan is an excellent researcher, who spent many, many years transcribing previously inaccessible records, and I would like to urge you to read the following information and send a letter to the Michigan Genealogical Council supporting her nomination for the Lucy Mary Kellogg Award. I have pasted the nominating letter and Mary Lou's achievements, after Pat's letter. This is your chance to help a local genealogist get the recognition that she so greatly deserves. ------- "Hello all, Some of you have sent letters to the MGC supporting the nomination of Mary Lou Duncan for the Lucy Mary Kellogg Award for 2001. This is a reminder to those who haven't that the deadline for these letters is May 1, 2001. Attached is a copy of her nominating letter and also a list of her achievements. Letters of support for this nomination would be appreciated and should be sent to: Michigan Genealogical Council Lucy Mary Kellogg Award Box 80953 Lansing, MI 48908-0953 Sincerely, Patricia Ibbotson Michigan Genealogical Council Lucy Mary Kellogg Award Box 80953 Lansing, MI 48908-0953 ------ March 15, 2000 Dear Sir or Madam: This letter serves to nominate Mary Lou Duncan for the Lucy Mary Kellogg Award for the year 2000. Please find attached a list of her achievements as outlined by the criteria set by the Michigan Genealogical Council for the Lucy Mary Kellogg award. All of her books are available at the Library of Michigan as are copies of the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine. Mary Lou has been an active genealogist for thirty years. She has a very positive, helpful attitude. No person asking for her genealogical help is turned away. She feels that knowledge of one's ancestors and their medical histories is essential to the well being of any individual. For the past ten years she has devoted her time to the transcription of records that will be of the most benefit to the largest number of genealogists; records that heretofore were hidden or difficult to access. This will be her legacy to the field of genealogy. The project of working with the Elliott Papers was not easy. The records were faded and water and mildew-damaged. The project had been started by others about twenty years ago, but had been abandoned because of the difficulty in reading the old papers and the amount of time involved. If these immigration records had not been transcribed, most would have become totally unreadable and the valuable information contained within them lost to family historians. No job is too small to merit her best effort. For example, in addition to all the writing she does for publication, she has been a proofreader for the DSGRM for twenty years. It is not always the most visible person who makes the greatest contribution to a field, but the steady and consistent contributor who sometimes works behind the scenes. Mary Lou keeps a low profile, but has made a significant contribution to genealogy in Michigan in the past thirty years. Sincerely yours, Patricia Ibbotson Editor, Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine -------- Nomination of Mary Lou Duncan for the Lucy Mary Kellogg Award: · Lifelong resident of the State of Michigan. · Furthered the aims and the accomplishments of the Michigan Genealogical Council. 1. Active delegate to the Michigan Genealogical Council, on the Public Records Committee, for about nine years, representing the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research. 2. Promotes genealogical research at every opportunity as a source of family history, local history and much needed information on a family's health history. 3. Member of the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research, St. Andrew's Society of Detroit, Irish Genealogical Society of Michigan, and Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County. 4. Contributed to the Surname II book published by the Michigan Genealogical Council. 5. Proved several lines of settlers in Michigan prior to statehood, for Sesquicentennial Certificates offered by the Michigan Genealogical Council in conjunction with the Library of Michigan, the supporting data now remaining with the library. She also helped others in obtaining data for those certificates. · Served in a position of leadership in a Michigan genealogical or historical organization. 1. Officer of the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research. She has been on the Board of Directors since 1988. Mary Lou was vice president from 1988-1990 and president from 1990-1992. She served on the Board of Directors as past-president 1992-1993 and is chairperson of the Bylaws Committee. 2. Mary Lou is a charter member of the Irish Genealogy Society of Michigan and is presently serving as vice president. She has been involved in many events for this society, including working on the Society seminar in February 2000. · Been involved in a major research project. 1. Mary Lou is a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies, of London, England, for the names STRATH and STRAITH. Members must collect all references to a specified name wherever it occurs throughout the world. Mary Lou has gathered records from South Africa, Rhodesia, Australia, and New Zealand as well as Great Britain, Europe, the United States and Canada. A master computer index of births, marriages and deaths of all Strath or Straith surnames found has been made and family group sheets have been prepared. Replies are sent to any inquiries concerning the name registered. She has given one woman in England a complete eight-generation chart on the woman's husband's descent from John Straith, schoolteacher of Nairn, Scotland and has helped others in Norway and New Zealand, also. 2. Indexed "Detroit Police Department Applications," Volume 1, of applications to the Detroit Police Force in the Burton Historical Collection of the Detroit Public Library. This is a list of about 400 names for the years 1885-1891. Also see "Authored or contributed to a notable publication." 3. Transcribed the complete records of arranged passages kept by Richard R. Elliott in his account book covering nineteen years. These were published by the DSGR, Inc. in 1999 in a book titled Passage to America 1851-1869:The Records of Richard Elliott, Passenger Agent, Detroit, Michigan. It listed the names of about 6,000 passengers, most of them immigrants settling in Michigan, ticketed by Richard Elliott during the years mentioned, the cost of their tickets, their ports of departure and destinations, as well as the name of the person paying for those passages. This project took over five years to complete. 4. Transcribed the passage tickets and foreign draft receipt book of Richard Elliott covering the years 1879-1891. This is a valuable, but little known source, to researchers as it contains the address overseas where the passage information or foreign draft was to be sent. This transcription is being readied for publication in a book tentatively titled Passage Tickets and Foreign Drafts 1879-1891: Records of Richard Elliott, Passenger Agent, Detroit, Michigan. 5. Transcribed letters written to Richard Elliott for the years 1848, 1849 and 1850. These are letters written to Richard Elliott in the course of his business as a passenger agent that are in 11 bound books, each containing 100 or more letters bound together. These will be published in book form in the future. Mary Lou devotes one day a week to this project and has written a "Finding Aid" for the Detroit Public Library on these important manuscript papers. · Authored or contributed to a notable publication. 1. In addition to the books mentioned above, Mary Lou is also the author of two other books published by the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research, Inc. These books are Mt. Elliott Cemetery Records 1845-1861, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, published 1994 and reprinted in 1999, and Detroit City Cemetery Records 1854-1861, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, published in 1996. She completed these books as a Society volunteer and all proceeds go to the Society. 2. She has had articles published in the Family History Capers of the Washtenaw County Genealogy Society, "Bible Records of the Hall Family" in the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society Magazine, and several articles in the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research Magazine, including the "Applications to the Detroit Police 1885-1891" (Volume 51), "Irish Passenger Emigration Procedures" (Volume 60), "New Church at Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan" (Volume 61) and "Poor Relief Letters to Richard Elliott" (Volume 63.) · Made a significant contribution to the genealogical or historical benefit of his/her community. 1. She has been the Society Genealogist for the St. Andrew's Society of Detroit for a number of years, an appointed position, being available to assist anyone in tracing his family history in Scotland or elsewhere. She initiated a table at the Annual St. Andrew's Highland Games, using her own books and supplies, to provide help on Scottish family research. This has grown to be a separate tent, one of the more popular attractions on the day of the games. 2. Has donated research time for her church's fund raising auctions and has helped the winner with one on one research. She is also available by mail, e-mail, or by telephone to answer questions concerning genealogical research. For sixteen years she has made a trip to Salt Lake City to research in the Family History Library, and, invariably, she takes along someone else's research, to which she devotes a portion of her time while she is there, and writes up the results for them without charge. · Furthered the knowledge of genealogy through educational practices. 1. Mary Lou taught a class in beginning genealogy for Grosse Pointe Community Education for a year and a half, continuing during the time in which she was receiving chemotherapy treatment for cancer, juggling therapy around class meeting times. For each of the three separate classes, Mary Lou arranged transportation to the Burton Historical Collection of the Detroit Public Library to enable the people to become acquainted with the library resources. 2. Mary Lou has given programs or lectures on genealogy to the following organizations: St. Andrew's Society of Detroit (Scottish research), Detroit Society for Genealogical Research, Irish Genealogical Society of Michigan and the Roseville Genealogical Society
Hi ANN , Glad to see you back on line, Paul
I have been handling the research requests for the Mount Clemens Library and the Macomb County Genealogy Group for many years now. I am also employed fulltime (not at the Library) - and do all the research and indexing as a volunteer. This is a labor of love (or obsession), but I do ask that a small donation be sent to the library, as explained on the Library website. These funds are used to purchase more materials such as newspaper microfilms for the local history room. You probably do not realize it, but the older newspapers are under copyright and cost about $85/reel. Although, I sometime lookup information and answer requests via e-mail, especially from data I have at home, I really prefer that you go through the Library as it allows us to purchase materials that will help all of us. As many of you know, I have not been having much fun this year. First I broke a bone in my ankle on the ice and then in Feb. ended up in the hospital for 8 days with emergency surgery. I am doing fine now and should be completely recovered in another 4 weeks. I would also like to thank you for the notes of concern sent to the library, or me personally, and also for your patience. I have had several research requests on my desk for up to 2 months now in various stages of completion that I just started getting back to. I just finished two of these, and hope to finish the others this week. If you had a request in, and do not hear from me within two weeks, please let me know, just in case your request got lost in one of my piles. If you want to send in a new request, you can do so, but with the understanding that I may be slow in responding, especially if it involves going to a location other than the Mount Clemens Library. Ann
Rhonda, As stated, to date there are no complete readings of Romeo cemetery available. There is a lot owners map and Stanley Eldred is not listed. B Taggert is listed as the owner of lot 10 in the 1st addition. Perhaps Lillian was buried on that lot. Mary Ann & Suzanne mentioned the Romeo plot maps available at the city offices. These are a series of maps listed in order by the lot number in each section. There is no general index except as part of the on-line cemetery index. I placed a copy of the plot maps in the Mount Clemens Library after I typed all the names to be included as part of the on-line cemetery index. At the time I did this I also recorded the section and lot numbers which I have in a separate database (not on the internet at this time). This information was not included in the cemetery database because of the structure of the original file. If Lillian Taggert was the mother of Stanley Taggert Eldred, then I probably can identify his father as Conrad S. Eldred from the following birth record I had previously found. Macomb Co Index & Record of Births Winston Callnis Eldred b Oct 4 1913 Romeo s/o Conrad S Eldred & Lillian Taggart of Romeo, salesman. I suggest that you search the 1900, 1910 & 1920 soundexes of Michigan to better identify this family. You would be able to get these interlibrary loan or through a FHC. I rather suspect that you will find them in Lapeer rather than Macomb Co. Actually the 1900 & 1920 census images are already on line with Ancestry which you can search by townships. However, since no name index is yet available and it is slow going opening up all the images and it would be much easier by first locating the images pages through the soundexes. When I needed to find someone in the Romeo Cemetery, I called the City offices, as there was no transcription of the gravesites. The clerk was very helpful. A caveat: If you are planning on visiting the cemetery and are unfamiliar with the gravesite, you will need a map. The cemetery is large and very lovely, but the roads that run through it are confusing. When we went on a Saturday, we had to flag down the sexton who got out his map for us. The City Clerk told me it was best to come into the city offices during the week to look at the map.
