Dear Listers, We live in California and I would like to look at newspapers of their day for obituaries or news items or legal notices of three relatives. Here are the person: George W. CONLEY of Goodland, Lapeer, MI died 28 Mar 1888 in Lapeer or Macomb counties. One or two Caleb WILBERs of Macomb Ct. or Dryden, Lapeer, MI (surname has variant spellings) died "in 1873" or a little later, in Macomb or Lapeer counties. Levi WILBER of Almont, Lapeer, MI who died 22 Feb 1906 in Lapeer or Macomb counties. What would have been local newspapers of that time? Where to find said newspaper - in the County, in Detroit, ar at the Lansing library? Sincerely, Bob & Carol Swenson rswenson@stanford.edu

Hi Daniel, I am a volunteer for the Mount Clemens Library and copied the note that you posted to the Macomb list on July 23, 2001 to work on. First of all there does not seem to be any extant cemetery records for this family in Macomb Co nor are there any probate records. There are a number of land records, but nothing that proves relationships. I am relatively certain that the James Walton that appears on the 1840 census of Shelby Twp was actually Jarvis Walton and I think that he was probably the father of your John Billings Walton. The census data does fit and he was living in the area at the time of his birth along with Jonathan Walton who was probably the father of Jarvis. Their land was adjacent and Jonathan held the mortgage on one of Jarvis's parcels of land. Other children of Jonathan appear to be Jonathan T Walton who moved from Macomb Co to Dryden Twp, Oakland Co in 1837 and Gurdon T Walton who lived in Detroit. Jarvis (and his father Jonathan, and brother Jonathan T) can be found in the 1830 census of China Twp, Genesee Co, NY, pg.162. Jarvis purchased land in Shelby Twp in 1833. His wife was Sally. Sally is last found on a deed on 1 Feb 1841 and on Dec 3 1842 Jarvis Walton age 45 married Mrs. Electa Ann Bradshaw (as her 3rd husband) age 35 in Oakland Co. Jarvis is found on the 1845 state census of Oakland Co in Troy Twp. This is the last record I found. Electa Ann died Aug 20 1865 age 58y 6m 10d and is buried beside her first husband Jarvis A Young in the Troy Union Corners Cemetery. I believe that you have interpreted the 1850 census of Sterling Twp showing Billings, Perry, Jane & Eunice as siblings, incorrectly. Jane was the wife of Perry Walton and Eunice was their daughter. The column for both Perry and Jane is checked married within the year and the age of Eunice is 5/12, not 3. Jane was the daughter of Elijah Bachelor and his wife Eunice Wales. She and Perry were married (as residents of Sterling Twp) at Pontiac Oakland Co 29 Jan 1850 (Oakland Co Marriage Returns). There was a Mary Jane Walton who married a James Warner and died in 1860 but she was a daughter of Jeremiah Walton who lived in the Richmond-Armada area of Macomb Co with no apparent connection to your Walton family. I believe that Perry and Billings were siblings and probably also a Mary Walton age 19 of Utica who married James B Chessall 28 Sep 1847 Pontiac (Oakland County Marriage Returns). They can be found on the 1850 census of Washington Twp and later in the Richmond area. Mary was still alive when James died in March 1883, but I was unable to find her death record (checked to 1923). Perry and Jane sold land in Sterling Twp in 1858 and may possibly have moved to Pierce Co WI by 1860 (census index). What happened to your John Billings Walton? Concerning Jonathan Walton, both he and his wife were age 60-70 in the 1840 census. The last record I found was when he sold his land on 23 Aug 1841 to Gurdon T Walton of Detroit. No wife signed, so probably she had died. There was a Jonathen Weldon age 85 CT living in the household of John C & Amy Woten in the 1850 census of Shelby Twp that could possibly be him, but that age does not coincide with the 1840 census. You will also find some information on Jonathan & his son Jonathan T in a gedcom on the Ancestry site. The information was placed there by Cindie Ann Wade of Dryden MI (cindiewade@hotmail.com). Ann

Dear List members, For the past several months we have been doing research, and entering information on our website about Primitive or Old School Baptist churches, and their members' surnames, in about twenty of the northern states across America. We have been working on Pennsylvania and Michigan lately, but have a long ways to go, as we have not done nearly as much research on churches in those states as in Illinois and others closer to us. However, we wish to submit what we have to the genealogy research public, in hopes of obtaining help, information about the location of records, and just to be of help wherever we can. We realize our information will not help a large percentage of genealogists, but since many of the churches are very old, we may be able to help some in Pennsylvania or Michigan, as we have in other states. We have a library of church periodicals with several thousand obituaries in them, and a database of names of members which now exceeds 30,000 and growing. The surnames we have given serve as an index to our database which includes full names, and in some cases we have obituaries, etc. If you wish to take a look at our whole website, go to: http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html Or, if you wish to go the Pennsylvania and Michigan page directly, replace the pbl.html at the end of the URL with FamHist-NY.html We welcome you to write in our guestbooks, or to write to us. It may take us a few days to reply to email.
