Hello listers: I just received a suspicious email that I think went through this list, but am not sure. It was from Tom Leach at: tleach@m33access.com In the subject line it said: Re: Re: (MIMACOMB) HOW TO FIGURE A BIRTHDATE I didn't even open it, but just clicked on it once in my preview pane, and when I did a file downloaded to my PC. I then tried to email 'Tom' at that address, but it bounced back. I've run my virus scan and found nothing, but am still very suspicious. Anyone else get this? Barbara

Hello all, I was very lucky to come across the following on the web. However, I have been unable to find out when William died. I would dearly love a copy or transcription of his obituary. I would guess that as well-known as he was somewhere there must be a write up of his death...His second wife was younger sister to my great-great-grandfather. Here's what was written about him in 1908: THE BOOK OF DETROITERS A Biographical Dictionary of Leading Living Men of the City of Detroit Edited by Albert Nelson Marquis Chicago A. N. Marquis & Company 1908 Copyright, 1908 by Albert Nelson Marquis JEWELL, William Franklin, president Detroit Business University; born, Oneida Co., NY, Mar. 7, 1837; son of Isaac and Sophrona (Knight) Jewell, and direct descendant of Thomas Jewell, of England, who received a grant of land at North Wallaston, Mass., 1639, and great-grandson through his mother of Gen. George Marsden, of the Colonial army; worked on farm, attended district school, and at 18 entered Wheaton College, Ill., taught school in winter for seven years and worked on farm in summer; took a course in Bryant & Stratton Business College, Chicago, 1864; married, 1st, at Elkhorn, Wis., 1860, Miss Elizabeth Ogden (deceased); 2d, Detroit, Sept. 3, 1874, Miss Margaret Brownlee. Began business career as bookkeeper for a lumbering firm at Green Bay, Wis., 1864, but soon accepted an offer to return to Chicago as teacher in the college which he had attended; having thoroughly mastered the counting house system as exemplified in actual business, he was selected by the proprietors of the college to introduce the system into their college at Detroit. Came to Detroit, 1865, associated in business interest with Bryant, Stratton & Goldsmith, in the Goldsmith College and was given entire charge of the course of study and the school room, becoming identified with the institution as teacher of commercial courses and bookkeeping; bought out the college, 1882, (founded, 1850), and later merged it with the Spencerian College under the title of the Detroit Business University, of which he has since been president and treasurer. Director Citizens' Savings Bank (chairman examining committee of stockholders for many years). Member Business Educator's Association of America, Detroit Board of Commerce. Independent in politics. These volunteers will do lookups in their database and records if you think one of your ancestors served in some capacity during the American Revolution. These volunteers have more databases that are available to them than the ones commonly used by the search engines. The process is fairly simple : Go to the DAR message board: There are two ways to do that: > www.rootsweb.com > message boards > topics > organizations and societies > DAR Or if you want the easy way [:-)] http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=topics.organizations.dar Address your message as follows: subject : DAR Lookup > surname> location > dates In the body of the message put the information regarding the person, Be sure to fill out the surnames box at the bottom since the new search engine will be keying on that item. Leave the email response box checked and you will be notified when the DAR volunteers respond . Give them a week or so to get to your request. We really appreciate their efforts. This info can be key for: a: joining these prestigious organizations ( DAR & SAR) b: sending a request for the copies of the files that were submitted and the information they have available. Many thanks to: Glenda Thompson DAR VIS Volunteer Vice Chrm. BTW: Please forward this message to other lists and boards that each of you are involved in. A word of thanks to each volunteer that does this work and especially the one that responds to your post would probably be highly appreciated.

Mr. Bergstrom, Very often the Social Security Death Index is very misleading in it's use of zipcodes for locations. The Michigan Death Index shows that George Tuorin died in West Bloomfield, Oakland Co, and that his residence was Wixom, Oakland Co. I suggest that you place a message on the Oakland Co. list or contact a library in that locality. I am another person who learned of Al Sierens death, November 9, with a heavy heart. Al was a friend, a mentor, and fellow-researcher who willingly shared his large fund of genealogical knowledge of Macomb County pioneers. He was an outstanding person and a tireless genealogist. Our correspondence and friendship goes back to 1987. He helped with me by sharing documentary abstracts, family charts and advice on a number of lines, including MAISON, BLAY, TROMBLEY, DICE, DEFER, SALGAT, VAN ATTER, MILLER and more. Packages of materials he sent were extensive, meticulously documented, methodically organized and filled with helpful suggestions. It was Al Sierens who published the Marriage and Burial records of St Peter's, Mt Clemens [a famously difficult church for genealogical research]. And his work on the CHARBONNEAU'S, his maternal line, is legendary. I know I was only one of many people whom he helped. It was my pleasure to know and work with Al Sierens and I will miss him very much. Lorelei Maison Rockwell, California
It was with great sadness that I read of Al's passing in today's Macomb Daily. The genealogical world has lost a good friend. Al's research has helped me find many "missing links". Laura Daniels Nixon
Macomb Daily, Saturday November 10 2001 "Alphonse J. Sierens, 72, of Mount Clemens, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, in Mount Clemens General Hospital. He was born Feb. 3, 1929 in Mount Clemens. Mr. Sierens was employed as a store manager for National Business Supply in Mount Clemens, and later owned and operated his own business, P.S. Office Supply. He was employed most currently as a store manager with Dale Office Products. He also was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, a trustee for the Mount Clemens Library, and a member of the Macomb County Historical Society, the Charbeneau Association, the French Canadian Heritage Society of Michigan and St. Peter Catholic Church in Mount Clemens. He also was a published genealogist who enjoyed genealogy. Burial will be in St. Peter Catholic Cemetery, Clinton Township. Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Sunday, with a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service, in the Harold W. Vick Funeral Home, 140 S. Main St., Mount Clemens. Additional visitation will be 11-11:30 a.m. Monday in the church." Al will be sadly missed. He freely shared his research with hundreds of persons. When I started volunteering my time doing local research for the Mount Clemens Library, he became my teacher and my friend. His research on the ancestors and descendants of French-Canadian families that settled in the Detroit River Region, and the Mount Clemens area in particular, was massive. Pursuant to his wishes, his entire collection of published and unpublished materials, will be moved to the Mount Clemens Library. Also included in this collection is information on local families, who are not of French-Canadian descent. Research or other questions pertaining to this collection may be directed to my attention.
