This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IGB.2ACI/379.1 Message Board Post: In 1860 my great grandfather, Anthony (Anton) Michels was living with the family of George Brinker in Grosse Pointe Township which was then Wayne County. In that census George was married to Angeline J., children were Amandus, age 3, Romanus, age 2 and Cecilia, 1/2. In addition to Anthony, there was also a 16 year old boy listed; George Gates. Anthony Michels, his parents and brothers arrived 1852 from Prussia. In 1860 each of the Michels boys were living with different families but I couldn't find the parents. I suspect the Michels made Michigan their destination because family or neighbors were in the area before them. Have you found the surname Michels with a connection to the Brinker family in any of your research? Just to add to the puzzle, my grandmother, daughter of Anthony, married Jim Girard. Two of Jim's brothers married Brinker girls; Frank Girard married Angeline and Walter Girard married Antoinette. The plot thickens.........
Here's another wild thought. My neighbor (in Maine) came across a few markers in her yard, not placed, but just lying around. and worried if people were buried there. After a little research and ponderings, we discovered, through land records, that the people that lived on the other side of the my house (2 lots down) in the 1800s had been gravestone makers, and lived briefly in the house next door. So, it was determined that these stones were samples -- stones that didn't make it to the graveyard because they weren't well done or had mistakes. FYI I've enjoyed this little "puzzle solving" dialogue! Sorry, Listers! The content note about the Macomb County Funeral Home Records Master Index should have said that the Kaul Funeral Home records are from the Roseville and ST. The Macomb County Genealogy Group and Mount Clemens Public Library are pleased to announce the debut of the Macomb County, Michigan Funeral Home Records Master Index. This database indexes funeral home records which are available in original or transcribed form at Mount Clemens Public Library. Currently, the index includes Kaul Funeral Home records from the Clinton Township and Roseville locations (in progress), and Schwartzkoff Funeral Home records from the Utica location, 1924-1941. Our thanks go to Brenda McMahon-Miller and Karen Lee Hemme-Rogers, who have been diligently transcribing the Kaul records for some time now, as well as to the management of Kaul's for making their records available. Thanks are also due to Ann Faulkner, who prepared the master index. The funeral home records project is ongoing, and records from additional funeral homes will be added to the index, so keep checking back! The index may be searched at: http://offserv.libcoop.net/mtc/funeralhomes.asp Happy hunting! Ann As you know death is before state vitals. If you can narrow who lived in that area in that time period (atlas, deeds, etc.) then I suggest contacting the area churches from that time who may have surviving records from that time period. Explaining there's a tombstone involved may get you an answer faster than a normal query. Lisa

We are assuming the data on the tombstone is correct....and that some kids didn't go playing a Halloween prank and bring the tombstone over from who knows where. Argh! DOB: Nov. 17 or 21, 1839 DOD: Oct 21, 1861 I ran 1839 and 1861 MI through the Family Trees on Rootsweb (I don't have the World Family Tree subscription on Ancestry). This is as close as I could come (keeping in mind...what if kids were playing pranks?) 1) Marion O. Crosby (m. George Miner Wight) was born 24 Nov 1839 in Redford, Wayne Co, MI and d. 20 Oct 1861 in Dearborn, Wayne Co, MI 2) Mrs. Martha Hadden (wife of James Hadden) b. 1839 and d. 23 Oct 1861 Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Washington Twp, MI (Note on Martha: The Macomb Co. web site lists her in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Was the cemetery walked and the transcriptions were made, or was this taken from records in the office? Also, George W. Hadden (son of James and Martha) died 30 Jun 1862 age 8 mo and 11 days. This would make him born 19 Oct 1861 and Martha dying 4 days later (complications from childbirth?)). I didn't see any listings on the Macomb Co. web site for Chesterfield cemeteries. Sincerely, Cheri Mello Torrance, CA

OK, I love a good mystery, and it isn't like I don't have *anything* else I should be doing right now (yeah, right) ---- I went looking in the land records at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ I found that a Michael Rivard had a land patent for land in section 23 (10/28/1835) in Macomb Co. In the 1860 census Michael Revoir shows up in Chesterfield with a son Mark (19). The first thing I would do is take a look at the area the headstone was found in and see if it is possible to figure out whose farm it came from, then work backwards from there. There are still enough old farmers around that someone should be able to come up with a name of some sort to put with the area. (Not that my grandpa would necessarily know anything, but he has more connections than an Edison pole.) Then track backwards through deeds. That would help narrow down a census search. Taking up Marilyn Arnold's search suggestion, I tried the 1860 census for MI/Macomb/Chesterfield--using no name--born 1839 [39 hits], 1839 + or -1 [122 hits], 1839 + or -2 [173 hits]. If the person was male, we could try to see which hits do not appear in the 1870 census... Or someone could make a chart of say the 173 hits and, over time, we could see how many could be eliminated... What about narrowing down the place in Chesterfield Twp where the grave stone was found... I'm sure others will have even better ideas. Can the land records be traced back to a familiy of that timeperiod? I know a family who found a stone under their porch, researched the family and turned little May Belle back over to the family cemetery in Selma, AL next to her parents.
