    1. [MIMACOMB] WAS: Order of Foresters,/NOW Louis Meddaugh
    2. Dan Harriman
    3. Wow! Louis Meddaugh. What an uncommon name to see in print. My mother had an aunt (Adelia Evans) who married a Lewis/Louis Medaugh/Meddaugh. This family lived in Wayne, or Belleville, MI. We used to go see them when we were kids. They had three children, Grace, Howard, and Mable. Howard is still alive as far as I know, but his sisters are both gone now. Of course, these folks had children, too. I remember Howard's children more than the others, since they were more my age, and Howard and his family lived with the senior couple. I don't know where Uncle Lou came from, but he did have a disability. One foot was amputated, but I don't know why. He died in 1959, his wife a year or so earlier. Do these names sound familiar to you? Have a great day, Dan Harriman Orange, Texas At 08:33 AM 10/29/2006, you wrote: >If it is the 'Independent Order of Foresters", it's out of Toronto, >Canada. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IGB.2ACI/626.1 Message Board Post: If it is the 'Independent Order of Foresters", it's out of Toronto, Canada. I have a letter that was sent to my grandfather, Louis Meddaugh, in 1910, that has a huge logo on top. It shows their building in Toronto, (cor. Richmond & Bay St., Toronto, Canada); their logo, which has several other smaller logos in it, and a list of their executive council. In this letter, they stated that my grandfather had been approved for total disability. The local (Alpena, Michigan) head of the order was evidently Jacob Emmick, Esq., 121 Lake St., Alpena, Mich. I even have the original envelope, sent from R. Mathison, Supreme Secretary, Toronto, Canada, to Jas. A. McPherson Esq., Box 657, Alpena Mich, US. Grandpa also received a certificate of admission of date of birth, sent to Jacob Emmick from Elliott G. Stevenson, Supreme Chief Ranger, Toronto Canada. I believe that the original group formed obviously in Toronto, and had local groups attached to it all over Michigan. It seems to! have been an organization dedicated to insuring the lives of members against loss due to injuries from forestry related work. try http://www.computerwire.com/companies/company/?pid=B72520D2-9D83-4A7C-8173-2BA671615E07

    3. Hope this helps. It was an early, self-financed insurance group. Their "fund raising" activities were sometimes mentioned in the old Richmond Review newspapers which can be purchased on cd from the Richmond Historical Society (http://www.geocities.com/raghs48062/) Source: http://www.virtualnewarknj.com/associations/foresters.php What is The Independent Order Of Foresters? The Independent Order of Foresters is one of the world’s oldest and largest fraternal benefit societies with over one million members. The IOF Foresters is international in scope with the majority of its members located in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The IOF Foresters sells a wide range of life insurance, and annuity products. History The concept of Forestry originated hundreds of years ago when people voluntarily formed groups called Friendly Societies to provide help for one another in times of distress. Based on the spirit of brotherhood, each family contributed to a fund from which they could draw when an emergency arose. In 1874 at Newark, New Jersey, a group of people carrying on these traditions of mutual aid and fraternity started The Independent Order of Foresters. As membership grew, the scope of the IOF Foresters broadened into a family fraternity. Picnics, excursions, dances and Court meetings drew the members closer together and strengthened family ties. >From the beginning, Foresters have often come to the aid of members who are victims of catastrophic disasters. Whether it be earthquakes, floods, tornadoes or fires, the IOF Foresters has many a time extended a helping hand to its members in distress. ph From: CLFLOWERS3@aol.com Reply-To: mimacomb@rootsweb.com To: MIMACOMB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MIMACOMB] Order of Foresters, Macomb County, 1909 Date: 28 Oct 2006 10:02:23 -0600 This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 3. Phil and or Lori- I'm half-heartedly working on a John KLEIST/KLIEST connection and could pass up the chance that either one of you might be able to help. All I know about my John KLEIST is that he married Charlotte POMAVILLE/KING in 1960, in Macomb County. The only likely candidate that I found was enumerated in the 1930 Michigan census as a 10 year-old lodger. The SSDI lists a John KLIEST as born 11/20/1919 and died 5/9/1981. He and his wife Charlotte were residents of Chesterfield MI at the time of her death in Feb of 1981. Can either of you folks help me with his parents? I have Charlotte's obit but there isn't a mention of any of John's family.
