Dear Listers, Mount Clemens Public Library and the Macomb County Genealogy Group are pleased to announce an update to the Macomb County Funeral Home Records master index. Included in this update are additional volumes of transcriptions for the Kaul Funeral Home locations in Roseville and St. Clair Shores, as well as the first volumes of transcriptions from the LaCroix-Groesbeck Funeral Home (now William R. Hamilton) in Mount Clemens. Many thanks to Karen Lee-Hemme Rogers and Brenda McMahon-Miller, who have donated countless hours in transcribing these records, and to Ann Faulkner, for compiling the master index. I've got a couple lines I haven't made much progress on myself. As far as I know you need to know where in Sweden they were born and then get the church record, not government. Their naming system is interesting. With your grandmother maybe her father's name was Karl Andersson, in which case she would have been named Amanda Karlsdotter and then when she immigrated the surname changed to match the father's? My gg-grandmother went by Johanna Nilson in America, but when I got her marriage record her parents names were listed as Mans Nilsson and Anna Swanson, so if I understand it correctly (big if), she would've been christened Johanna Mansdotter in Sweden and her mother would've probably gone by Anna Svensdotter. I think when they immigrated they just took the father's name since that's the way it was done here. So what your grandma said would make sense then, better hope she doesn't read your posts. What are you looking for with this couple? Have you already traced Gustaf's line? His draft card lists his birthplace as Dalsland (sp?) Sweden, don't know if you have that. In answer to your question, I wouldn't normally be sitting at the computer this much, but I have a fussy new baby who's decided that he likes to be rocked in the computer chair. I don't mind at all, and people have looked up plenty of stuff for me too. If you're new to internet genealogy I can send you a list of websites that are helpful. My email's lmrentfro@yahoo.com, so we don't clog up the Macomb board with that. I live in Missouri and have never been to Michigan, so I have no idea about the Mount Clemens library. I know they used to look up the obits for you, but that service is on hold now. Maybe we could trade favors, since I have a couple obits I could use. Here's the link for their site. http://offserv.libcoop.net/mtc/obitindex.asp Email me and let me know exactly what you're looking for. Then I named off a couple on the list and he started to rattle them off in order. He (my grandpa) is 91 - sharp as a tack I tell ya, but getting old. After the phone conversation I hope I am as good as him when I am that age. I kept looking up Schneider - so it was under Snider. lrtyndall - I really appreciate your help. I know I have already said that like 15 times but I really do. Are you from the Macomb area? I am from Port Huron. I would like to get the death cert's like you stated from Mount Clemens Libray, I am assuming that I will have to go there - that is not on line is it? I have to go down there anyway to visit them in the next couple weeks. Thanks again - this is so cool. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Do you mind doing this for me? I really appreciate the help and I don't want to impose at all. This has been a lot of help - it REALLY has. The reason that I don't want to impose is - there is more help on this line that I need too. I have written to my relatives in Sweden to see if I can get something but we have not written to them in years - I mean years so I don't even know if the address is good let alone them still being alive. My ggrandmother Amanda Caroline Anderson - was the only descendent from Sweden to come over we think and she only had one daughter - My grandmother. You see her sister was supposed to comer over but got in trouble (not sure what that was) and could not come so my ggrandma took the ticket and came over. I was able to find some information on her - Birth date 18, Sep 1889 - Died 17 Nov 1962 and she was married to Gustaf Fredrickson who was born 31, Oct 1889. But nothing on her parents or anything like that. When I found the date she immigrated over here from the ship manifest I took it to my grandma and he was almost in tears. She thought that was the coolest thing. You see - the only thing that my grandma has (which I thought was really weird) was her mom's bible. There are inconsistencies to if she was Karlsson or Andersson. My grandma seems to think that her fathers name was Carl and when she came over she switched to Anderson which does not seem to make sense. She is 91 and is pretty sharp lady but sometimes I think that she might be confused - that was a joke, I really love my grandparents and 60% of the reason I am doing this is they are still alive. I spent a lot of time trying to find something on the Swedish pages - ok, days but they are pretty confusing and I abandoned that for now. Anything that you find I would really appreciate. Hi Ann ! Chester Smith died in Lapeer Co.., NY and I found it in the Lapeer Society's obituary file at their wonderful collection....they certainly are an active group. Recently, one of their members completed an awesome project. She spent seven years compiling all the family names from their two oldest newspapers' microfilms. She, noted if it was an obit, a death announcement, a birth announcement, or a family comment....trips, illnesses, etc. All the researcher has to do is to look up the surname, get the date, and then look at the microfilm for the ancestor. It was just recently added to their collection. The identity of my Arba's father was sent to me by a cousin in Texas who has access to the IGI files and it was there that he found my Arba (correct birth and death dates) with his father added. I am now attempting to locate more information on him in Cortlandville, Cortland Co., NY. His death date was given as December 31, 1817. I found it quite interesting that Cortland Co. has two townships named Marathon and Lapeer. He, also, sent me information that when my Arba purchased land in Macomb Co in 1825., he was living in Genesee Co., NY. I still haven't found out who the mysterious Johanna McDonald was, though. She was supposed to have helped him purchase the land or at least sponsored him in some way. Sure do wish I could find an obit for Arba's wife, Mary, in Macomb or at least a death record for her that might list her parents' names. Is this something that the sexton for Washington Twp. might have? Is there a newspaper for her death year available on microfilm? She died 20 June 1875. Did you know about this site online? _Find A Grave Search Results_ (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSfn=Arba&GSmn=&GSln=Smith&GSbyrel=b efore&GSby=1790&GSdyrel=after&GSdy=1865&GSst=24&GSob=n) My Arba and Mary are on it with a picture of their tombstones. Take care of yourself and keep doing your exercises ! In the last four years I have had two knees replaced....lost them both to arthritis..and the exercise is still very important...especially in this cold , snowy weather up north. I've been going to water aerobics classes and it has really helped. I am finding that Ludington is a very friendly community. I'm hoping that I can find out more about their genealogical resources and eventually do some more volunteering through the RAOGK group in the summers.
