Sharon, I don't know about the rest, but I do know a Quackenbush expert. His name is Rick Quackenbush and he used to be on AOL under the user name of [email protected] He has written one book on them and was in the process of gathering data for a second one when I was in touch with him. He found my line for several generations, not just the Q line, either. He even gave me some generations of the married to Q folks. Good Luck and if you find out Rick has gotten around to writing that second book, let me know. I would be most interested in supporting his quest! -- Mary D... _____________________________________________________________________ ICQ - 3081831 [email protected] http://www.idir.net/~medaily/ _____________________________________________________________________ Let us also pray for wisdom... for the grace of God that we do not become the evil that we abhor. -- Reverend Nathan Baxter, September 14, 2001 _____________________________________________________________________ [email protected] wrote: > I am searching for more information on the following: > > Descendants of Edward B. I'm trying to find out if Peter C. Wilhelm Funeral Home is still in operation. I have a mass card for my great uncle, Michael Koptyra, from 1956 listing Peter C. Wilhelm Funeral Home, St. Clair Shores, MI. I am interested in contacting them (or who ever has the records now) to find more info. on my uncle. Sheri and the rest of the list, I can't say it enough times... NEVER open an attachment from someone you DON'T know. And especially NEVER open an attachment from someone you DO know if you weren't expecting it. Many people out there send jokes and files back and forth, opening them merrily, even gleefully, day in and day out without thought. That's why this type of virus will spread like wildfire when it gets started. Do yourself and all your friends and family a favor. Quit sending this type of thing around, tell them to quit sending them around, tell them to tell others to quit sending them around and one day the mischief makers won't have a reason to use this forum to spread their dread. This particular DREAD has been visited on three of my lists, or what would seem to be on the list, since Rootsweb doesn't allow attachments. It looks like it's using the subject line of the last messages the e-mail program got to RE: the virus around to the address lists. That's just a guess, mind you. Please spread the word. -- Mary D... _____________________________________________________________________ ICQ - 3081831 [email protected] http://www.idir.net/~medaily/ _____________________________________________________________________ Let us also pray for wisdom... for the grace of God that we do not become the evil that we abhor. -- Reverend Nathan Baxter, September 14, 2001 _____________________________________________________________________ Sheri Siemen-Pieprzak wrote: > Listers, > > Upon further investigation, I have discovered that the virus sent to me from Tom Leach was not sent through the Macomb Co. list. hello, I got a blank email from a Tom Leach ("Tom Leach" [email protected]) also, but I did not notice it do anything to my computer. It was sent to me with the subject Schwartz. I think I have an old message on this board about that side of my family. Listers, Upon further investigation, I have discovered that the virus sent to me from Tom Leach was not sent through the Macomb Co. list. It can directly from him. My apologies to the list for bothering you. Tom, if you are still monitoring this list, you've passed along a virus, please take the necessary steps as to not pass it along again. Maybe this Norton Anti-Virus website will help http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected] Happy Hunting, Sheri
Barbara, I just got the same type of thing from the same fellow and the subject was "Re:[MiMacomb]http://dir.lycos.com/computers/internet/e-mail/free/forwarding" I use Netscape 6.1 and it asked me if I wanted to download the file of type "application/octet-stream". Of course, I said no. Please don't ever download this type of thing, don't click on it, don't touch it with your mouse. You will live to regret it. I'm not sure how long you have been on the internet, but about a year or two ago, there was this cute little cartoon, ok, cute may be pushing it, but this little guy ran across the screen and farted and the fumes from the fart spelled out Happy New Year! How amusing, I thought, but I wouldn't even open it when my brother sent it to me and I know he's just as wary as I am. Wouldn't you know it, a friend of mine sent it to me along with another cartoon a couple of weeks later and I decided to go ahead and open them. They had been around for a while and I hadn't heard about any problems from them. Mind you, this was just days after I have done a virus definition update and scan, so there really wasn't any virus on my computer before I did this. Soon after, just to prove to myself that it was ok, I did another scan and voila, virus. You can never be too careful! Like Mary Ann said, delete it right away and immediately clean out your trash can! I have been working on the internet for about 6 years now and I can truly say that I have only had one virus because I have been careful. It only took that once to prove to me that I was right. Imagine how much data would have been lost if I hadn't done that scan when I did! Just wanted to pass on some info for all of you. It seems that many computers are having problems once again with virus'. Not to worry here as this list does not allow attachments and that is how they are carried. When you get an email with an attachment take a good look at the email address. Does it have a _ in front of the address? If so. Delete it! Now, fast and quickly then empty out your deleted items if you have one. That is why it bounces back if you try to tell the person they have a problem. Take off the _ I think that many have been dealing with this problem I have had 12 yesterday and 2 already today. I belong to about 10 research lists and it seems they all are experiencing the same. I use Microsoft Outlook, (not Express) This deletes the files that are harmful before they even get to me. I still use a virus protection also. One other thing I do is to use an online scan. I do this once a month. There are a lot of viruses that block and disable your virus protection that is on your computer so when you do a scan it shows everything is fine when it isn't. I use : http://security1.norton.com/us/home.asp?j=1&langid=us&venid=sym&plfid=23 &pkj=YQJCVDKDNVRQQCZUFMQ You will no doubt have to paste this one as I doubt it will come out together. This way I know my machine is clean and protected. It take about 10 minutes to run. My son who is one of those computer techno geeks is the one who recommended these changes for me due to the volume of mail I get. And I have yet to have a problem. Also he told me how to report the viruses that are sent out. As you know that when you look at the headers of the mail that is sent you it gives the code of the computer that sent it. I have had 2 emails that were sent on purpose with viruses and was able to track them to the person using this method. http://www.netsol.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois This will let you enter in the ISP number and will tell you who the main server is. You can then send the company the complete internet header and then they will contact the person who has the virus and let them know. Many times these people do not have a clue they are sending a virus. Better a 10 minute check and be safe!!!! Well back to work again.
