    3. Family History Library of Salt Lake City has on-line Macomb County marriages in two "batches" , those recorded before 1849, and those after 1861. An accompanying statement says that marriage records of 1850-60 are missing. My question is, were the 1850-60 marriage records not photographed by FHL, or are the marriage records missing from the Macomb courthouse? We speculate that our great grandparents, George W. Conley & Hannah Mariah Wilbur of Goodland in Lapeer County, married in Macomb County, possibly in Romeo - where the bride's grandmother, Mrs. Celia Vanatter. lived with her son in law Asa M. Leach, in the 1870 Census. Assuming the county courthouse records are missing, are there accounts of marriages performed as early as 1860 and before in Romeo or vicinity newspapers? Surnames: Rice, Harper Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IGB.2ACI/556 Message Board Post: I have no connection to or further information on this family. Rochester, Monroe, NY Union & Advertiser Apr 25, 1895 G. H. RICE ARRESTED He Visited Rochester in Search of a Woman He Played the Part of the Virtuous Uncle and the Alleged Niece Went With Him Now He is Charged With Desertion and Other Crimes Under the Connecticut Laws George H. RICE, who created quite a stir, in some circles in this city about the middle of last February, is in trouble at Brooklyn, Conn. John L. STOTT's detective agency this morning received a letter giving information of the whereabouts of RICE, and enclosing the following clipping from the Boston Herald of April 23d: George H. RICE, charged with desertion and cohabitation at Danielsonville, Conn., has been held in $1,500 bonds for the Superior Court, and sent to the county jail at Brooklyn in default of bail. RICE obtained notoriety a short time since by his management of the hosiery mill at Danielsonville. On the 15th of last February, RICE went to Detective STOTT and presented his card which represented him to be the proprietor of the Globe Hosiery Company of Danielsonville, Conn., manufacturers and dealers in cotton, woolen and merino seamless hosiery. He related a story, telling how his niece, who was dear to his heart and his especial ward, had run away with a married man from Detroit. He said the man's name was F. J. HARPER and that he left behind a wife and three children at his home in Michigan. RICE said he traced the couple to Buffalo and then followed them on to Rochester. He told the detective that he wanted to run down the couple here. Men were at once put on the trail and finally located a trunk belonging to HARPER at the New York Central station. When a cartman took the trunk away from the baggage room it was found that the stopping place of the man HARPER and the woman was with a family on Savannah street. RICE claimed that there was a warrant out in Detroit for the arrest of HARPER, but when Chief of Police CLEARY telegraphed to the police officials of that city he got a reply that no such warrant had been issued. The day following STOTT went into the house and confronted the girl with the facts he had learned. The girl broke down and cried. She finally consented to accompany the detective to the Whitcomb House, where RICE and a woman whom he alleged was his daughter were stopping. The trio then apparently "made up" and the niece consented to accompany RICE. The latter by finding his niece apparently had accompanied the object of his visit to Rochester and the next day he left town without settling his accounts with Detective STOTT. RICE went directly to Syracuse and in a day or so the papers of the Saline City contained an account of an episode in that city. It appears that RICE and the two girls who were with him hired a hack and were driving about the city when RICE saw HARPER. He leaped from the hack and gave HARPER a severe beating with his cane. RICE was arrested but was discharged by the police justice. The next that STOTT heard of RICE was this morning when he received the letter referred to above. RICE is alleged to have a record as a schemer of unusual ability. He is said to have deserted a wife and three small children at Armada, Mich., three years ago. About four years ago, it is said, he was arrested in this city under the assumed name of G. M. BROWN of Flint, Mich. At that time he was charged with attempting to work some sort of a confidence game on farmers in this vicinity. The present charges against RICE are of a serious nature, and it is not expected that he will get off very easily.

    3. Please join us next Tuesday, February 7 for the regular meeting of the Oakland County Genealogical Society. The topic of the presentation by Leslie Edwards, Archivist at the Cranbrook Archives, Bloomfield Hills is: "Forgotten Harvest: Oakland County's Winter Gold," This is a fascinating presentation on ice harvesting and its effect on the Oakland County and early Michigan economy. Learn something new about the winter life of our ancestors. This was hard and dangerous work! The Oakland County Genealogical Society meets at 7:00 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 5500 North Adams (between Long Lake and Square Lake roads), Troy. The Church has a flat entrance and ample lighted parking. Meetings are open to the public and free of charge. All are welcome. Note: Adams Road is closed (for at least a year) between Maple and Big Beaver. From the south, take Woodward or Coolidge to Long Lake, then proceed to Adams and north to the Church. 1. Become "Next of Kin"
    2. C_Jensen
    3. Hi , I was visiting Mt. Elliott Assoc. today and was shown their spiffy new software for record keeping. I was surprised that there was no next of kin listed for my ancestors. Of course, the family members who arranged the burials in 1908, 1912, 1942 are all deceased. How many of us think of registering with the cemetery as the current "next of kin"? We call for data, take photos of tombstones- but do we leave our name and address in case the cemetery needs to contact the family? We should. In the case of Mt. Elliott Association they send out a newsletter. With grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins interred there I would like to receive the newsletter. So, If you have ancestors buried at Mt. Elliott or Mt. Olivet Cemeteries in Detroit I suggest you register as the current "Next of Kin" and become an advocate for your ancestors. Kari Wood on staff of the Assoc. will collect and update your data. Email her at : kwood@mtelliott.com Be sure to send: Name of Ancestor Date of Internment Your Name Address Phone Relationship to Deceased If you are associated with other cemeteries give them a call and register as NOK. 2. Ann Faulkner
    3. Dee, I checked the index (actually twice) for Lawrence Thayer and Lillian Johnson, and the marriage license IS NOT located in Macomb County. Unless you have an actual County, it would probably be best to work through the State of Michigan since you have the approximate date. Information is available at http://www.michigan.gov/mdch/0,1607,7-132-4645---,00.html If they are not found, be aware that a lot of couples from this area went over to Ontario to marry, and the indexes covering this period are available at the Mount Clemens Library. You could request a search through the Mount Clemens Library research services http://www.libcoop.net/mountclemens/research.htm . Toledo and Bowling Green, Ohio and even around Angola Indiana were also popular places to marry.
