Surnames: Abernethy, Switzer/Sweitzer, Kelsey, Walker Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IGB.2ACI/561.1 Message Board Post: Dear Tee: I traced my own home (in Maine) back to ~ 1800 when it was built and to one of the original settling families of the town (1730s), so it is possible to do this. Here's what you do -- You can trace the house through the deeds. Go to the courthouse (or hire someone to go to the courthouse) and go through the Grantor/Grantee indices (seller/buyer). Find your parents' deed, which will say who they purchased it from -- John Smith -- and something like "this is the same property recorded in Book ABC, page 123." And then you go back to that book and page repeat the process. Then take those names and information to the local library and look for a local history. There are two online for the county at the Mt. Clemons PL. Alternatively, contact the local historical society and ask them who might know this information. Good luck! It's lots of fun ... (although I'm not sure I'd want my home to have been a funeral parlor either!) Best wishes, Marilyn Arnold

    1. Charles A. Spencer 1848 - 1914 - Michigan
    2. JOHN
    3. HI all, Could someone please check to see if you have a CHARLES A. SPENCER listed in your data, or know of somewhere I may be able to obtain some information? CHARLES was born July 23, 1848 in Southfield Township, Oakland County, MI. He moved to Macomb County in the 1860s, where he was a painter by 1870. In 1870, Charles was living in Washington Township, Macomb county, with Daniel and Elsa Moore. Daniel was also a painter. According to the Michigan 1870 census, roll 688, page 144, line 32, Charles was age 21. It is my belief he married someone while in that area, and then remarried a girl from Ohio in August of 1873, named Jeanette Porter. Who Charles married the first time, how long he lived in Macomb county, or when and where he moved to, is what I'm searching for. Charles died 11-26-1914 in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI. He is buried in Oxford, Oakland Co., MI. If possible, would you check to see if you have anything on Charles? Thank You for any help you may be able to give me on him, he is my Great-grandfather. 1. Ste. Anne External Parishes--source at Burton
    2. Lorelei Rockwell
    3. Loraine DiCerbo shared this source with me recently and I thought others might be interested. At least two of the baptisms Loraine found are shown in Denissen as having taken place at St Francis Clinton River. Although I have not personal seen this source, I think it will prove helpful to many of us searching for French-Canadian ancestors. Source as described by Loraine DiCerbo, February 2006 I found a supplemental volume titled "Ste. Annes Church Register- External Parishes and Index, 1810-1833". This book (in French) covers the period just before Father Boheme's L'Anse Creuse Register begins. At the Burton Historical Collection, Detroit Public Library, it is located along the back left wall of the library, right next to the 7-volume collection of the Ste. Anne's Church Register. It's about 225-250 pages long, and it is almost all baptisms. There are a few deaths, but very few, and they are mostly children who died soon after birth. This source is often overlooked probably because the records are in French. It covers the years 1810-1833, and they are records that occurred locally, but external to Ste. Anne's, conducted by either the local priests (Fathers Richard, Dejean, etc.), or even general members of the congregation in the absence of a priest. For example, one of the Labadie children was actually baptized by Etienne Blait. Although the records are in French, names will be familiar and baptismal records are usually an easy to understand boilerplate. Lorelei Maison Rockwell

    1. Oakland County Genealogical Society
    2. Pam Warren
    3. Please join us next Tuesday, March 7 for the regular meeting of the Oakland County Genealogical Society. The topic of the program will be "Placing your Ancestors in Historical Context." Genealogist Sharon Brevoort, using timelines and chronologies, helps us visualize the life and times of our ancestors, to locate new sources and avoid pitfalls by identifying inconsistencies early on in the research process. Related on-line and software resources will be covered. The Oakland County Genealogical Society meets at 7:00 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 5500 North Adams (between Long Lake and Square Lake roads), Troy. The Church has a flat entrance and ample lighted parking. Meetings are open to the public and free of charge. All are welcome. Note: Adams Road is closed (for at least a year) between Maple and Big Beaver. From the south, take Woodward or Coolidge to Long Lake, then proceed to Adams and north to the Church.
