Assuming that your father is dead, you can request his birth certificate based on the information in his social security application. If that comes back with nothing, you can try going to the jurisdiction where he claimed he was born and ask if you can look through the birth records to see if he's listed there under a different surname. You didn't say what year your dad was born in. Depending on when he was born, you can try the census. 1930 has an everyname index on ancestry.com.
