    2. Hi all - just a note to let you know that the Moran Township Board of Trustees has also published 2 books - one called When the Moon is high (38 pps), and the other, Moran Township Sesquicentennial Edition (233 pps.).  The second book has info on burials in the cemeteries or Gros Cap, Western Brevort and Ozark.  The last time I was there, which was last summer they literally had boxes of these books half way to the ceiling!  Both books together were around $25.  The contact is Janis Holle, she is the township clerk, her number is 906/643-8027.  These paper back books are valuable if you have family from around St. Ignace.  Happy hunting! Terry Weller p.s. - does anybody know how to get a hold of Phyllis Massey, who used to work at the St. Ig church? Phyllis are you on this list? If you are please email me!

    3. Kent, I have a book entitled "Les Cheneaux Pioneers" by John Markstrum which is about Cedarville and Hessel in Mackinac. In the back of the book, there is a list of some of the early pioneers to the area including the dates of arrival. There is a mention of a Hammel Family: From Page 79: Partial list of Ceaderville Pioneers "1877 - Anthony Hamel, township supervisor and fishing business, with five sons listed below: Harrison Hamel, boat shop on Hodeck Street, later contractor in Detroit Robert Hamel, construction contractor Guy Hamel, real estate Harvey Hamel, school teacher" Also from page 14 in a chapter entitled "Cedarville": "Harrison and Robert Hamel built Cedarville Boat Company in 1906 and in 1910 produced the Elliot, the Commet, a V-bottom Cat Boat and launches" Also from page 46&47 in the chapter "Steamships, Tugs and Motorboats": "Anthony Hammel owned a tug, called Joker about 1895. This tug later sank, but it was raised by Mr. Hamel and his young sons about 1900 and they operated it some time after that." "The Skiddoo, a fast small launch, was built by Harrison and Robert Hamel in their shop, named Cedarville Boat Company in 1910. As I had considerable sawmill experience, I became the millwright for them and helped to build the Elliot, Dick White's Comet, and a launch for Miss Cutting also a V-bottom Catboat. I installed universal wood-working machinery, a large Alamo gasoline engine to power the shop, since there was no electric power." I hope this information may be of some interest to you, Laura
