LaLone" <jplalone@p...> Following my comments is what I have on this BOURASSA line, 1) Where, if I understand your message right, did you determine that Topinabe is Rene BOURASSA II? The dates don't match (at least the dates I have!) Topinabe Sr. was b. 1758 and died 1826, he was the son of Anaquiba & Katabwe. Topinabe Jr. b. 1801-d. c.1840. Nowhere have I ever seen them referred to as anything but Native American/Potawatomi. Rene BOURASSA I, b. 1688-d.?, m. to Agnes GAGNIER Rene BOURASSA II b. 1718-d.1792, m. Anne-Charlotte-Veronique CHEVALIER. Rene BOURASSA III b. 1744-d.? Now, comments on my material below- I have heard that there are two Daniels, but no one has sent me any documentation, also that the two Theotis are the same, again no idea how. Perhaps Daniel left the first wife, married BERTRAND then went back to the first wife if indeed they are the same person?? I don't know, I do have three marriage dates though. As you can see Daniel had two Madeleines, the one did NOT marry her uncle. I think that the Madeleines are indeed Daniels as the baptisimals indicate that but of course the one was years later, so no definite proof, just have to take the church's word. Now I need some clarificitation: under the marriage of Madeleine BOURASSA & Joseph BERTRAND I have two Julias: Julia J. BERTRAND b. 25 May 1823 & Julia Ann? BERTRAND, are they the same or did one die young? Which one is yours and can you tell me which is yours and do you have more info (vital records dates/places, in-laws, names of all children, etc?) Eventually I plan on doing an article on the BOURASSA family of Mackinac for our journal Michigan's Habitant Heritage (pub. by the French-Canadian Heritage Society of Michigan.) Thanks, Jim.

ON the Bourassa genealogy she is listed as a Bourassa On the Topinabee genealogy she is listed as Madeleine Topinabee Did Joseph Bertarnd marry twice? Where does the name Topinabee come from? that is what i am asking. The reason i ask at all is because her sister Magdeline married a William McGulpin and i am researching the Martineau's who married their daughter, Eleanora Lena McGulpin. Magdeline is sister of Daniel and sister of Madeleine who married Joseph Bertrand Now is her sister madeleine Bourassa or Madeline Topinabee????? i do not understand this. The name changes. why?

Now i am not pretending to know what the answers are to this confusing puzzle but you have to check out what i found at deeds and nations: amazing; Topenebee / Topinabee / Topenibe [fl. 1813 onwards; died in 1840], principal Pottawatomie chief from the St. Joseph River, Neshnabek clan; a drunkard according to Hoyt; brother of Chiefs Weesaw, Chebass and Pottawatomie principal woman Kaukema, son of Pottawatomie Chief Anaquiba, uncle of Pottawatomie Chief Tonquish, adoptive brother of Catholic Pottawatomie Chief Pokagon, father of Chief Leopold Pokagon; he opposed the Pottawatomie actions at Fort Dearborn in 1813; he was a Baptist church supporter; presided at and signed the US Greenville Treaty, August 3, 1795; Topenebee the younger signed the US Treaty of Chicago, September 27, 1833, which led to the removal of the Pottawatomie Nation from Michigan (US 1837: 54, 297; Clifton 1975: 30, 55, 99-101; Clifton, Cornell, and McClurken: 52, 62; Tanner: 135, MPHSC vol. XXXV: 149). 'Father, we do not care for the land or the money or the goods offered us. What we want is whisky! Give us whisky!' [said to have been spoken with sarc! asm]— c. 1830 (MPHSC vol. XXXV: 149). I don't know but i thought the treaty was signed in 1821 is this a different treaty? I am going to do some more searching we have Topinabee the "younger" we have an 1840 death date here we have that the younger signed for the removal we have that he is the "adoptive brother of Chief Pokagaon" HMMM???????????????????? here is the url for this site: http://www.adamsheritage.com/deedsnations/references.htm the editorial info:Edited by Frank Davey & Neal Ferris 1996 Occasional Publication of the London Chapter, Ontario Archaeological Society Inc. THAT IS THE BEGINNING: there are 13 more pages and many posts concerning this lineage the line i am tracing goes from Rene to REne to Rene Francois BOURASSA married Charlotte-Veronique CHEVALIER in Mackinac 1726. if you will read these postings from bourassa descendents you will see that the beginning is clear but there is some confusion later down the line especially where the indian lineage is traced. Some names are mixed up i believe and i am still trying to sort it out. Now here are some stories: REne who married Veronica is supposed to be Chief Topinabee, the last Potawatomi War chief. There is reference to this in a book called "Potawatomi of the West... Origines of the Citizen Band... by Rev Joe Murphy. O.S.B. You can look at this post and the discussion of chief Topinabee and his son Chief Daniel at the genealogy.com forum http://genforum.genealogy.com/bourassa/messages/160.html The BOURASSA name is entwined with the fur trade and metis genealogies. It seems that migrated from Canada and were found here in St. Ignace, were found in Indiana/Illinois/ohio and in Kansas/oklahoma (this is due to the indian removal) I am sure you will be able to find exactly what part of the tree you come from if you search out these sites and post on them. And a million other questions!!! Good luck and happy adventuring!! There are great names and people associated with this name!! You will find plenty of stories!
