I also found out from the tribal specialist that Elizabeth was really only a quarter blood and not full blooded like the 1870 and 1908 annunity paylists state.Since the BIA never counted her father Louis Belanger and her mother was only concidered half that would only make Elizabeth a quarter blood. I'm not concerned about that anyhow, cause I have no intention of joining a tribe anyhow. My sole reason for locating my ancestors was because my father died when I was nine and I never learened anything about my mothers family either.I don't do look-ups anymore, cause I got burn out.It was just to much to digest. So I've been throwing out what I don't need or doesn't apply to my family and put it all away.I just got tired of looking at it. The query you probably saw about Antoine Martin was someting I was trying to find for another cousin and nothing of my own.I've been thinking about teaching classes on how to do family history.I haven't quite made up my mind on that one as yet. You can e-mail me direct if you wish. there's some things I don't like to put on these message boards, cause I really don't think it's other peoples business. Hope to hear from you again.

    2. Hello listers - I feel that I should comment on Cherie's statement about the Mackinac Band. I met with the staffer there and found her to be unfamiliar with the original 1836 Half Breed Census. Since the band is basing their enrollment on Mackinac members listed, I was surprised at her lack of knowledge about the original document. The staff must have access to other versions of the census that is easier on 21 C. readers. I did not intend to impugn anyone's abilities or skills in the tribal office. Thanks! Terry Weller

    2. Hi all - was just wondering if anyone in Mackinac County knows how to get cemetery records from the Newton Township Cemetery or what church to write to for more information. I'm having trouble locating the name of the Catholic church in the area that would have served the community from 1890 to 1900. Can anyone help? Thanks, Terry

My main purpose for collecting information on ancestory has nothing to do with gaining entry into a tribe.Besides I don't need a indian card to tell who and what I am.I'm just me.After the bad experience I had serving on the board with the Mackinac Band in Hessel ,which by the the way is run by the John Causely clan I don't think I want to ever be a member of any tribe anyhow..Terry Weller told me in one of her e-mails that she wasn't to impressed with the enrollment clerk in the Mackinac Band when she went with a friend of hers to the tribes office. My only and soul reason for locating my ancestors is because my father died ten days after my nineth birthday so I wasn't able to learn about his Indian ancestory. My mother didn't talk to much about hers either.I had originally been helping a family member locate information on some of our ancestors and figured I may as well continue the ride since I was so much involved anyhow. As you well know trying to help someone find their ancestory can be very challenging and frustrating at times. People email me quite often asking me to help them find their families.I explain to them that I'm not a researcher. Some provide just bits of pieces of information that I possibily couldn't help them if I wanted to.Some people don't seem to realize that there's lots and lots of people who can share the same common first and last names and such.I've found that to be the case researching my own line where records will show familiy members having the same first name or else the same month and day of birth. It's a common thing. As an example in my situation.I found two Samuel LaBlanc's in the Cheboygan County death records. Not knowing which was which even though I had the year ,month and date of death for both of them I contacted a cousin who told me that one of them was the grandfather and the other one was the grandson. Thanks Again. Cherie

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HGB.2ACI/471.2.2.2.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Cheri, You had to ask a difficult question which in some ways I cannot answer. If someone asked me to help them to help find their Native ancestry for enrollment in a tribe I tell them I cannot help them. Believe it or not it is a different type of genealogy. You have to be aware of several things: the tribes are separate countries and can make their own laws and therefore can say who is Indian and who is not. Membership in a tribe is based on their base rolls so they can say everyone listed in the 1870 annuity is considered fullblood, even if this is not the actual case. This is especially important where membership is based on blood quantum as opposed to lineal descent. The BIA goes along with these definitions. This is one reason you will find different records showing different blood quantum for the same person. When presenting your material to whoever (the tribe or BIA) you want to present your findings in the most positive light (ie. with the most Native blood). If you show an ancestor with more non-native blood then what has been generally accepted then you can reduce the blood quantum of a whole bunch of other members. This affects funding by the BIA which maintains the tribe has to have a certain percentage of qu! arterbloods. Is any of this making sense? The BIA and tribe do not necessarily base blood quantum on one document. Your Elizabeth BELANGER being listed as fullblood in the 1908 census may be a case of interpretation for that particular document, I do not know, you would have to research the history of the document. Elizabeth’s father is French-Canadian and her mother is only one half Native so technically Elizabeth is only one quarter Native. That is probably what the tribal specialist meant that Louis is not counted. Anyway this aspect of Native genealogy is not necessarily straight forward (too political for me) so I have nothing to do with it and tell people to get a professional to deal with membership applications. These people are part of the Soo (& Mackinac) Tribe and they are a lineal descent tribe. I understand they will be opening membership rolls next year, so you could possibly get in without having to have a blood quantum, however that does affect some benefits you would receive, I believe. Sorry I can't be of more help. Jim

Bureau of Indian Affairs.I found a copy of a Ottawas and Chippewas Census of August 1,1908 at the Mackinac City Public Library and it showed my great-grandmother Mrs. Samuel LaBlanc/LeBlanc( Elizabeth Belanger) as being full blooded Indian. The tribal specialist told me that the government didn't count her father Louis Belanger. How could someone be considered full blooded if our government only uses blood quantum from only one parent. This just doesn't make sense. That would be like someone claiming to have a full glass of liquid when the glass was only half full.I was told by Gary Miller when I first met him that he found alot of corruption/mistakes on the Indian Rolls.Would you clear up any confusion on my part? Thank You. Cherie
