Ken I am Michael Mills of Mount Airy, MD. My ancestors date back to 1658 when they settled in Calvert Co., MD. I have spend many hours researching the Washington County, Maryland Mills line as I was certain that they were related. As it turns out DNA ruled otherwise and they were not related and to that end saved me much thought and additional research. However in my research I became aware of the Bedford County, PA, Mills line and have come to believe that they are related to the Washington Co., Maryland Mills line. I was able to with the help of Shirley (sevansn8s@aol.com) who is a member of this list and descendant of John Mills, Bn 1727, of Washington Co., MD, male descendant of that line and a DNA sample was provided and the results when posted proved that the Washington Co., MD Mills line was not related to my Southern, MD Mills line. That you believe that your Thomas was born at Washington Co., PA causes me thing a bit for the following reasons. Washington Co., PA was first noted to be a small camp along the trail followed by the many Rev War soldiers who came from MD and eastern, PA as they traveled westward to protect the western frontiers from the Indians and those British soldiers who had the courage and guts to go there. The camp, was then known as Catfish Camp. It did not become settled and known as Washington Township until the late 1770s (I think 1779 or thereabout) It's rise in population did not occur until after 1780 to 1784 as soldiers and family thereof began populating the area. Washington PA was the gateway to the Wheeling Creek and the soon-to-be settled Northwest Territories. As history and the records confirm, most of the Mills family members found to be in Washington Co Pa during the period 1778 to 1790, were of the Washington, MD line. If your DNA results are on file and do not much with Robert Mills of California then it is not likely that you are related to Thomas Mills of that era and in the area of Washington, PA. I will check my records for the email and name of a woman who I know is a direct descendant of Joseph Mills of Bedford County, PA. Her father is a Mills and as I recall she indicated that he would be willing to participate in the Mills Surname DNA Project. I can recall only that her name is Wendy Mills ??. But I will get in touch with her. I am convinced that Carolyn is also related to this Bedford County, PA Mills line and that would mean that Carolyn was descended from the Mills at Washington County, MD. Keep in mind that before 1776 Washington County, MD known as Frederick County and that prior to 1748 was known as Prince Georges County, MD. Ken, feel free to call me at 301.370.4393 anytime and I can then provide much more insight as to the Washington Co, MD and PA Mills lines. I do not often get the time to chat by computer as hearth, home and business keep me from the keyboard. So I am much better able to talk then type. Look forward to hearing from you soon. Michael A.
