Dear Susan, Uncanny! It was just yesterday at NEHGS in Boston that I ran across this John and Huldah and was wondering who that John was. He might be of the Bedford, NY, Mills family, descendants of Zachariah Mills, son of George 1 Mills of Jamaica, Long Island, NY. Or, more likely, he may be a descendant of Zachariah's brother Samuel whose son Samuel went to Greenwich, Conn. Samuel of Greenwich had a grandson, Denton Mills, who was baptized at the Second Congregational Church in Greenwich on 5 June 1729 and died at Ridgefield 9 Nov. 1791. His wife was Sarah Cornwall whom he married at Ridgefield on 29 Feb. 1760. I'm taking that from my own article in the NEHG REGISTER of April 2002, vol. 156, p. 119. But I didn't follow Denton any further than that. Since you say John and Hulda are buried in Ridgefield, I'm pretty sure he doesn't belong in the family of John Mills, shipwright of Stamford, Conn. Have you searched probate and deeds? Ridgefield was in the Danbury Probate District until 1841 when the Ridgefield district was established. And there are some church records on FHL microfilm. But it looks like the early Congregational Church records may only be available at the Danbury Public Library. And I have a vague memory of a collection on Ridgefield families, a manuscript at the Conn. State Library, but I may be thinking of something for another town. As for Huldah, I ran across her in a little book by John L. De Forest called ANTHONY DE FOREST OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, 1739 (no place, 1983), pp. 23-25. It says Huldah, b. 1800, m. John Mills. She was the daughter of Reuben and Huldah (___) deForest. Reuben served in the Revolution and was a pensioner in 1832, cert. #17906. He was born at Stamford, Conn., on 14 Dec. 1752 and lived there until 1797 when he went to New Canaan, Conn., where he died. His first wife was Huldah ___ and his second was Hannah Weed whom he married at Ridgebury (part of Ridgefield) on 18 Oct. 1825. That pension record should be on Heritage Quest Online (selected papers only). Search for Reuben deForest (no space in the name) and it gives his number as S17380 (not 17906). This adds that he died on 3 June 1836. It says he had 16 children, 10 living, and names them, including Huldah Mills. But it doesn't say her husband was John. I imagine that must have come from their gravestones. Or did you already know all that about Huldah? Helen Ullmann
