I noted the response to the query about Elisha Mills' probably not being born in 1771 in Ohio because the Northwest Territory (which included five current states of today including Ohio) was not settled until 1788. I have a similar piece of information about an ancestor and have been told the same thing. My ancestor, Stephen A. Smith, was said to have been born in Warren County, OH, in 1786. That is on an old family chart my grandmother had made in the 1920s or 1930s. Researchers in Warren County have written me that that is very unlikely; yet they have also seen a listing of that same information. I have read that there were folks who were wandering around in the Northwest Territory prior to 1788, some of whom probably took time to build some type of abode and to have children. Just thought I'd throw this into the pot. My MILLS ancestor is Henry Mills, born in Durham County, Canada, in 1835. Sure wish someone would send me the name of his parents. Frances
