    3. Hi Pat, Nice to hear from you again. Josephine MORAN VAN VALKENBURG MILLS was born abt 1846-48 in Cinn OH. But I do not have a birth cert. They were not issued back in the 1840-50's. I don't know to which church they belonged. Josephine was the daughter of Michael MORAN & Julia HURLEY. I have found from Emmigrant Savings Bank Records that Michael MORAN opened the acct stating he was from, Carrick, Westmeath, Ire...arrived in US in May 6, 1832. He had a brother, Patrick living in Troy, NY, 2 sisters, Ann & Bridget living in NY & his mother, Bridget CONRY MORAN. His father, also Michael, was deceased. Michael & Julia had 2 sons, born NYC ...Frank born 1840 & John born 1842. Michael was a moulder/founder by trade. The MORAN's were Roman Catholic They were in OH in 1844-46 when 1st daughter, Maria (Mary) Elizabeth MORAN was born...supposedly Covington, Miami Co, OH according to IGI...but there is also a Covington, KY right across the river from Cinn...I haven't found them in either place. Josephine F. MORAN was supposedly born in Cinn, OH about 1846-48. Her death cert lists Cinn, NY. From what I have read, the rr was just being built thru Covington, Miami Co, OH at that time, so it is possible Michael was working as a founder/moulder with the rr...pure speculation on my part. They were back in NYC on Nov 13, 1850 as Michael opened the ESB acct then. They were in NYC in 1860 & 70 Census. Sometime between 1870 & 1880 Michael MORAN died, not sure if in NYC or NJ, but Julia, widow, was living with her daughter, Josephine & Joseph MILLS in Jersey City, NJ in 1880 census. Julia is buried in Jersey City & Mary MORAN ROOME, Josephine's sister, is buried with her mother in Holy Name Cem, Jersey City. Michael MORAN is not there. Mary MORAN married Abner Q.C. ROOME in NYC 21 Sept 1867 Josephine F. MORAN married Tremain VAN VALKENBURG in Jersey City, NJ in 1872...I have marriage return...her residence was given as New York, his as Jersey City...they had a daughter Lillie, born 1873. In 1878 Josephine, widow, married Joseph MILLS, also in Jersey City, NJ at St Joseph's RC Church. I also have marriage return. They had 2 daughters: Hannah B.MILLS, aka Dorothy/Dottie, born Apr 1881, Jersey City, my grandmother, married Frank Warren MATHEWS Blanche L. MILLS, born May 1888 PA. From Josephine MILLS' obit is says Blanche married a PARTRIDGE. Both Blanche & my grandparents, Frank W. & Hannah (Dottie) MILLS MATHEWS were living in Norwood, MA. From Census & Jersey City City Directories, Joseph : 1878-79-80 living at 142 Cottage Ave JC, telegraph operator 1900 living at 43 Van Riper, JC 1918 living @ 111 Duncan Ave 1920 & 1930 Censuses Joseph MILLS no longer living here, but step daughter, Lillie, is with her husband, Clarence HARTPENCE According to the Census Joseph MILLS was a telegraph operator & a RR Ticket Agent. At the time of Josephine & Joseph MILLS' marriage he was a telegraph operator. Josephine was a few years older than Joseph and as time goes on her birth year changes on the censuses & she gets younger. Josephine MILLS died in Jersey City, NJ May 25, 1918. She is buried in Jersey City Cem in a pauper's grave. I haven't found where Joseph MILLS is buried or when he died. But I would guess between 1918 & 1920. I have seen other MILLS graves in Jersey City Cemetary & one of these days I hope to get up there to photgraph them & post the graves to the MILLS board. Meanwhile, I am still hoping to find Joseph MILLS' birth info so I can find who his mother was. But I am not sure what religion was at the time b/4 marrying Josephine MORAN. Regards, Jeanine NJ ChekWriter@aol.com wrote: Hi Jeanine Back in 2001 you wrote on the MILLS surname that Josephine MORAN was from Cincinnati, Hamilton Co. Ohio? Did you find this not to be correct? Thank you Pat cw It would change the MILLS possibilities a little bit. Abner MILLS - Betsey MARSH etc. family might then be related in some way to Joseph, maybe. And or the MILLS who later settled in Clinton Co. Ohio as well. Also MILLS LAYTON WILSON BARRERE families too, were in the area. ============================== View and search Historical Newspapers.
