Dear Pat, John Mills married Rachel Bates of Salem, Mass., at Boston on 5 October 1743. This is from A REPORT OF THE RECORD COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF BOSTON CONTAINING THE BOSTON MARRIAGES FROM 1700 TO 1751 (Boston: Municipal Printing Office, 1898), page 276. This book is also known as vol. 28 of the Boston Record Commissioners series. There were a number of Mills in Essex County, particularly in Salem and Lynn. There are a couple of possible Johns there who may have married Rachel. Salem is not a long sail from Boston. I've compiled a little stuff on them but not enough to connect the families or to know where they went. I haven't researched probate and deeds yet. Some of them went to Maine. Here's a likely family (see below), but I don't know what rootsweb will do with the footnotes. I think I'll copy you on this message and they will more likely come through on a direct email. Pennsylvania sounds a little unlikely, but there were Massachusetts people who went there. Helen Ullmann John Mills married at Salem, Massachusetts, on 22 April 1737 Elizabeth Chapman.[1] <#_ftn1> She was perhaps born at Salem 15 December 1705, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Cook) Chapman (AF). Did he marry (2) Rachel Bates of Salem at Boston on 5 Oct. 1743 (28th Report, p. 276)? Children of John and Elizabeth (Chapman) Mills, baptized at the First Church in Salem:[2] <#_ftn2> i. Elizabeth Mills, baptized 7 Oct. 1739. ii. John Mills, baptized 30 Dec. 1739. iii. Stephen Mills, baptized 6 Feb. 1742/3. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [1] <#_ftnref1> Vital Records of Salem, Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849 (Salem: Essex Institute, 1916), 4:90.
