I will set forth a report of my OWN ancestral line, and along with it names of Mills families in the same area, in case they are related to other researchers reading this list. Please reply back to the list with all comments. Gideon Mills born 1798 New York, died 11-4-1870 Deerfield, Fulton Co IL. The largest city in Fulton Co IL today is CANTON, IL. and this is located very close to PEORIA, Peoria Co., IL. In the 1830 census I believe that Gideon Mills is listed at Moriah, Essex Co NY. In the 1840 census he is in Fulton Co IL, in the area called Copperas Creek In the 1850 census he is in Fulton Co IL, in the area called Utica, living next door to Ira Mills b. 1803 NY. In the 1860 census he is in Fulton Co IL, in the area called Deerfield, section #13, he arrived there in 1853. In the 1870 census he is in Fulton Co IL, in the area called Deerfield, near the Ellis Post Office. Gideon Mills b. 1798 NY married a woman prior to 1827 and they had at least one son named William H. Mills born about 1827 New York. Sometime about 1836 they arrived in the area of Fulton Co IL where he settled for the remained of his life. At least one son was there with him, and that was William H. Mills b. 1827 NY. On 6-23-1840 Gideon Mills b. 1798 NY married for the second time to Emeline Bishop b. 1811 CT, d/o Ira Bishop of Trivioli, she had previously been married to Lem (Lemuel) Marston (Hartson/Harten), he died in 1838 in Canada. The children of Lem Marston and Emeline Bishop were: James Martson b. 1830 Canada, served in 55th Regiment of Illinois Infantry, in Civil War. Lois Marsten b. 1834 Canada Susan Marsten b. 1838 Canada After Gideon Mills and Emeline Bishop married they had a second family together, these were their children: David Mills b. 1841 Fulton Co IL; served in 55th Regiment of Illinois Infantry in Civil War. Nelson G. Mills b. 4-8-1844 Fulton Co IL, married Ellen Jones 11-16-1871 Stark Co IL, d/o Isaac and Ruth Jones. Served in 70th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry. His kids were: Isaac N. Mills; Henry O. Mills; Ruth E. Mills. In the 1870 census he was listed at Stark Co IL, and the 1900 census he was at McDonough Co IL. Ann Mills b. 1844 Fulton Co IL (her name may have been HESTER Mills) Sarah Mills b. 1848 Fulton Co IL Mary Mills b. 1850 Fulton Co IL Francis C. Mills b. Dec 1854 Fulton Co IL; married 1-23-1894 Mrs. Mary H. Huffard; his step daughter was Hazel Huffard b. 1889; his children were Bertha Mills b. 1886; Leroy Mills b. 1888. 1920 census Frank Mills b. 1855 IL was at Lewistown, Fulton Co IL. As of 1871, Emeline Mills b. 1811 CT, was widowed and living in Spoon River Bottom, Fulton Co IL, and she reported that was a mother of 14 children total, she said she had 3 boys and 3 girls with her first husband Lem Marston, and she had 4 boys and 4 girls with her second husband Gideon Mills, as of 1871 she reported that 3 of her 6 kids with Marsten were living, and 5 of her children with Mills were living. She said that she had 4 married children as of 1871: 1 living in Montana; 1 living in Kansas; 1 living in Iowa; 1 living in Fulton Co IL; and the rest being still single. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilfulton/1871FultonAtlas/OldsSettlers7.html I have a strong suspicion that Gideon Mills b. 1798 NY was the older brother to Ira Mills b. 1809 NY and Alonzo Mills b.1810 NY. All these men lived at one time on Copperas Creek, which is the area now nown as Banner, Fulton Co IL. In the 1860 census both Alonzo Mills and Ira Mills live next door to each other, and in the 1850 census both Gideon Mills and Ira Mills lived next door to each other. Ira Mills b. about 1809 NY owned a LANDING on Copperas Creek, with a one story log cabin used as a warehouse. I suppose he made his living from rents recieved from storage of items brought into the area via the water. According to other researchers, this Ira Mills was very hard to deal with, and not a likeable fellow. I have never seen him with a wife or children, so it is possible he was a batchelor. In a courtcase dated 1853, Gideon Mills sued Ira Mills in Fulton County court case 2262.2, I feel that this was the reason that in 1853 the Gideon Mills family left Copperas Creek to move permanently to Deerfield, Fulton Co IL. I think this was a falling out between the 2 brothers. Alonzo Mills b. 1810 NY married a Sarah b. 1828 NY, but she would have been a second wife to him, I do not know his first wife's name. The children of Alonzo Mills were: Ellmore (Elmer?) Mills b. 1839 Missouri Franklin Mills b. 1844 New York David Mills b. 1849 New York Isaac Mills b. 1853 New York Marcus Mills b. 1855 Missouri In the 1860 census Alonzo Mills and the family above were all living next door to Ira Mills b. 1809 NY at Copperas Creek, also known as Banner , Fulton Co IL. Alonzo is a CARPENTER. The son of Gideon Mills b. 1798 NY is William H. Mills b. 1827 NY. William H. Mills married 7-11-1849 to Rosilla Douglas Simmons in Fulton Co IL. She was living there with her father Lebbeus Simmons, formerly of Mercer Co PA. They had the following family: George Mills b. 1851 Fulton Co IL died 1913 Nebraska. I have no wife or kids for him. Charles Mills b. 1855 Fulton Co IL, died ??, I have no wife or kids for him. John Oscar Mills b. 1853 Fulton Co IL died 1916 Portland , Oregon. He married Emma Brower, one daughter Pearl D. Mills, she is my great grandmother. Lebbeus Gideon Mills b. 1860 Fulton Co IL, d.??, married Clara E. Wright 1-13-1886 Fulton Co IL, children: Anna Mills b. 1890, married Fred William, children: Nora William b. 1909 IL and Wilfred William b. 1910 IL; Ola M. Mills b. 1887 IL; Leila Mills b. May 1889 IL. 1910 census Gideon Mills was at Cass, Fulton Co., IL. Estella Mae Mills b. 1865 Cuba, Fulton Co IL died 1913 Oregon, never married, no children , this is confirmed. Ellen Mills b. 1862 IL Edward Mills b. 1857 Fulton Co IL, died 1934 Fulton Co IL, never married, no children. I do not know where William H. Mills died, nor his wife. In the 1860 census at Fulton Co IL, there were the following MILLS families listed: #1. Gideon Mills b. 1798 NY, married to Emeline Bishop, as previously listed above, at Deerfield, Fulton Co IL. #2. Abraham Mills b. Dec 15, 1821 Ohio, died Apr 17, 1902 Fulton Co IL, married Mahala Blount 11-28-1849 Fulton Co IL. This family is NOT related to my family. In the 1880 census Abraham Mills states his father was born in New York, but he was born in Ohio. So he was either born in Ohio or Indiana of a father born in New York. His children were: Edgar Mills b. 1851 Fulton Co IL Ernest Mills b. 1853 " " Laura Mills b. 1854 " " Mary Mills b. 1855 " " George Mills b. 1859 " " Charles Mills b. 1860 " " Ewa C. Mills b. 1865 " " Jessie Mills b. 1868 " " (female) Mahala Blount b. 6-2-1828 Ohio, d. 5-13-1913 Fulton Co IL, d/o Allen Blount b. 1800 VA, father born Germany mother born Ireland. The Abraham Mills family line is researched by Joyce Hagerty hag@winco.net She believes this family line goes back to Thomas Mills b. 1760 New York, he moved to SC, OH, KY and some of his kids moved to Fulton Co IL. Amos Mills born 1775 in Long Island, New York, died about 1824 Indiana. He married Catherine Hulick/Gulick b. 1784 NJ. She died 4-23-1858 Deerfield, Fulton Co IL. spoonvalley2@yahoo.com Eleanor Mills b. 1805 IN, married Abraham Hulick, she died about 1879 in Dorchester, NE. Maria Mills b. 1822 IN, married Eligale Hilton Ruth Mills b. 1824 IN, married Uriah Washington Dickson. There is also an Isaac Mills married to Ruth Mills Hulick in Farmington, Fulton Co IL, which is next door to Deerfield. #3. Alonzo Mills b. 1810 NY, married to Sarah, already listed this family previously, in the 1860 census they are at Banner, Fulton Co IL (previously known as Coppperas Creek) #4. Ira Mills b. 1809 NY, this man is living in 1850 next door to Gideon Mills b. 1798 NY, and in 1860 census he is living next door to Alonzo Mills b. 1810 NY. I feel the 3 men are probably brothers, all from Essex Co NY. #5. William H. Mills b. 1827 NY, s/o Gideon Mills b. 1798 NY and first unknown wife. Married to Rosilla Douglas Simmons. The Smithtown and Mills Pond MILLS families, of Suffolk Co NY (this is the EASTERN section of Long Island, New York) George Mills b. 1585 d. 1674, settled at Jamaica, Queens Co NY. Timothy MIlls b. 1667 d. 1751, settled in the Suffolk Co NY area, EAST of Queens Co NY. see: http://www.geocities.com/millsancestry (you may need to google for this website) #2. Mills families located in Hartford Co CT, go back to the immigrant ancestor named Pieter (Peter) Mills of Windsor, CT who was a Dutch immigrant. Please see the BOOK written by Helen S. Ullmann, available at www.newenglandancestors.org In conclusion, I am not yet sure of the father of my earliest ancestor Gideon Mills b. 1798 NY, is might be a William Mills b. about 1773-1776, who married Hannah, and they lived at Moriah, Essex Co NY. William and Hannah are buried at Mineville Cemetery, Moriah , NY. In the 1830 census William F. Mills is listed at Crown Point, Essex Co NY In the 1840 census William Mills is at Moriah, Essex Co NY In the 1850 census William Mills b. 1773 is at Moriah, NY with a wife Hannah b. 1780. In the 1860 census William Mills b. 1773 NY is widowed and living at Moriah, NY in the household of Cheney STIMPSON. William Mills d. 3-9-1861 or 1867, apparently the grave stone has been read as both 1861 and 1867, so the last number must be very hard to decern between a 1 or 7. He died at 91 years of age, and his wife Hannah died 2-10-1852 at 72 years of age.
