Hi there, I am still looking for my elusive Mills family. So far, I have now found out the following: George Mills was born in Reading, Berkshire in about 1849 to parents George and Ann being an only child. I have found a birth on freebmd for Reading in Mar Q1850 for a "Male Mills" which could possibly be his birth. I also found a christening on LDS on 29 February 1856 at St Mary, Reading, Berkshire to parents George and Ann. In 1871 census, it is shown that George was a carman and was a lodger in the household of Mr William Colan at 34 Flower & Dean Streets, Christchurch, Spitalsfields (Whitechapel District). He married on 2 June 1872 in the parish church in St Nicholas parish, Deptford, Kent to Margaret Baker. She was born in about 1850 in Sunderland, Durham. Margaret was the daughter of John Baker and Agnes Mitchell. The Baker's were in the ship business. . In the 1881 census, George is listed as being a ship fender maker and also as being blind. (He could possibly have been working for his wife's family as they were in the shipping business. His neighbours on either side, were Mrs Ann Pratt a charwoman and Mr Robert Winder a basket maker. George and Margaret had 4 children, Elizabeth in 1873, Walter in 1878, Margaret Ann in 1881 and Eliza in 1889. Eliza was born after the death of George who died in 1888 in Greenwich. On his son's marriage certificate, he was listed as deceased and having been a farrier, and on his own marriage certificate to Margaret Baker he was listed as a labourer (1872). George's father was listed as Cook and Margaret's father was listed as Shipwright. They were both full age and from the parish of St Nicholas . Their witnesses were Robert Baker (Margaret's brother) and Stephen Fi(e)tch. George and Margaret's son, Walter, was born in 1878 in Deptford, Greenwich, Kent. In 1881, he is shown to be living with his parents, and siblings at 17 York Street, Greenwich Kent in the census. Together with the family, were two lodgers, a widow John Galler, aged 32, and his son, aged 9 years. John Galler was a basket maker. In 1891, the family were living at 56 Road Street, Greenwich, and the eldest daughter Elizabeth was shown to be a photographers assistant. By this stage, their father George had died in 1888 at the age of 41 years, leaving his wife to look after their children, with Eliza being 2 years old. Their daughter Margaret was not listed among the rest of the family, as she was at the S M D School for girls in Surrey. In 1901 she was a domestic cook in Greenwich working for the Steel family. Margaret was listed as widowed and a "Laundress Wash". She died in 1904 in Greenwich at the age of 53 years. In 1901, Walter is shown as living in Lamb Lane with his mother and sister Eliza. He was a Stoker at Oil Cloths Works. Between 1901 and 1906, Walter, being a purser on board ship, met Mary Jane Caroline O'Leary. She was a governess to a wealthy family teaching and looking after their children. (In 1901 she was a boarder, when next we find mention of her, she is getting married in 1906.) On 9 May 1906, while living at 25 Leppoc Road, Clapham, Walter George marries Mary Jane Caroline at the St Michaels at Bowes church in Middlesex. He was listed as a Purser on his marriage certificate. Walter was 27 years and Mary was 30 years. Mary was born on 13 March 1876 in Cork, Ireland to parents Stephen Joseph O'Leary and Jane Caroline Nash. Mary's father died between 1878 and 1881. Her mother was listed as a confectioner in the 1881 census, and her sister Amelia Anne was living with them at 11 Winster Terrace, Camberwell, Surrey. Mary moved and became a boarder in the household of John H Culpin at 77 Grosvenor Road, Walthamstow, Essex as shown on the 1901 census. At the time of Mary's marriage in 1906 she was living in Lancaster Road, Bowes Park, Middlesex. Shortly after their marriage, within months, they emigrated to South Africa, landing in Durban (Port Natal). They settled in Port Shepstone where their first child was born, a son. If anyone is following the above family, or could possibly help me confirm the names of George (B1849) parents. Perhaps someone could do a lookup for George and Ann Mills in 1841, 1851 or 1861 census to confirm them as parents of George Mills born 1849/50. I would appreciate any bit of information no matter how small to assist. Many thanks Kind regards Jackie
