    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: paul_etter Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mills/438.1893/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In regards to the William Mills found in this family, I am searching for the origin of a William Mills found in a Cass County, Indiana newspaper index that lists his death there in 1855. At this time, I have been unable to find the actual copy of the death notice or obituary on microfiche. My gg-grandmother, Martha Matlin Mills was born in 1855 to Mr. and Mrs. William Mills of Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. She stated to her granddaughter that she was an orphan. I find her in an 1870 census of Perry Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana at 15 years old living with a Matilda Hull. This is very close to where my gg-grandfather George Washington Clinger lived, and she subsequently married a few years later. A search of the 1860 census finds Matilda Hull living in Washington Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana with a girl shown as 6 years old with a name given of Persealeth Hull. Further searches for Persealeth Hull have been fruitless. My theory is that the name Persealeth Hull was dropped and she assumed the name Martha and reverted back to using her birth name of Mills, rather than that of her stepfather. My grandmother lived with Martha Mills Clinger until her death 1930. Unfortunately, except for the name of her father and the origin of her birth, very few details have come down through the family. My question is: Logansport is linked to Fort Wayne by the Wabash Erie Canal. Could this wandering William Mills be the one from this family? What happened to your William Mills?
