The Joseph Line below is probably the Joseph Linn mentioned in the deed. Yes, the deed information below that Lori sent has dates within the message: 1804 Deed Book "D" page 837, on 4 Feb 1804, William and Rebecca MILLS of Westfield Township, Essex County, NJ sold 2 3/4 acres and 3 square rods to Robert Woodruff for $125.00. The lot was 1/2 of Lot # 8 located on the north side of the second mountain in Bernards Township, Somerset County. The other 1/2 Lot was owned by Jeremiah MILLS. 1816 Deed Book "I" page 464, on 4 June 1816, John and Anna MILLS of Westfield Township, Essex County, NJ sold 2 3/4 acres and 3 square rods to Joseph Linns for $75.00. The wooded lot was located in Bernards Township, Somerset County. The lot was next to the lot of William MILLS. MILLS FAMILY CONNECTIONS for Jeremiah (#1) & (#2) Mills and William (#1), (#2), & (#3) Mills vs. Elias Mills as father of Jeremiah (#1) Mills Two Records of Significant Importance: The deed records posted by Lori on the RootsWeb Message Board reflects the year of 1804 and 1816. http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mills/5662/mb.ashx 1804 Deed Book "D" page 837, on 4 Feb 1804, William and Rebecca MILLS of Westfield Township, Essex County, NJ sold 2 3/4 acres and 3 square rods to Robert Woodruff for $125.00. (Internet, RootsWeb Message Board, 14 Dec 2008: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mills/5662/mb.ashx by Lori MacCormack) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Jeremiah Mills and William Mills to Joseph Line, Bill of Sale, Know all men by these presents that we Jeremiah Mills and William Mills, both of the Township of Westfield, County of Essex and State of New Jersey, Adms. to the estate of William Mills, dec., have for and in consideration of the sum of eighty-five pounds of good and lawful money of the State aforesaid, -to us in hand paid by Joseph Line of the same place aforesaid sold unto the said Joseph Line one negro boy about fourteen years old,--named Tom; which said negro boy we do bind ourselves to warrant and defend unto the sd. Sealed and delivered in the presence of John Miller, Charles Clark, Jeremiah x (his mark) Mills, William Mills. (Source: Tim AYERS: Book: Scotch Plains, "The Story of an Old Community," by Reignette Marsh, page 46) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ William (#1) Mills (wf/Amy ???) died 1795 Essex Co., NJ. His estate of 1795 in Essex Co., NJ was administered by Jeremiah (#1) Mills and William (#2) Mills and they sold Tom (their negro slave) to Joseph Line. (See record administration record above.) Then with the deed information of 1816 posted by Lori (given above), we find that land in Somerset Co., NJ was sold to Joseph Linn (probably clerk error in spelling or error in transcription for Line). It is my opinion that Joseph Line and Joseph Linn are probably one and same person. It is my belief that John Mills (wf, Anna Denman) was s/o Jeremiah (#1) Mills and Elizabeth Marsh. Secondly, so many researchers on WorldConnect have named Jeremiah (#1) Mills (wf, Elizabeth Marsh) as s/o Elias Mills Sr. It is my belief that this is erroneous, as none of the researchers have shown sources or references that brought them to this conclusion. In my 40 years of research I have never found Elias Mills of the town of Westfield, NJ connected with William Mills (#1), (#2) or (#3) of Westfield Township, Essex Co. (now Union Co.), NJ in other than a cousinly relationship. Their names show up on tax rateables and petitions as freeholders, but nothing more to connect Elias as father of Jeremiah (#1) Mills. However, all evidence and research done by Helen Schatvet Ullmann, CG, points to the fact that William (#1) Mills was s/o Samuel Mills and (2) Mary ???, of Elizabethtown, Essex Co. (now Union Co.), NJ. Her same research points to the fact that Elias Mills was s/o Joseph Mills, brother of Samuel Mills. This means that William (#1) and Elias were first cousins, and that Jeremiah (#1) would have been a 1st cousin once removed. It is my belief that Jeremiah (#1) Mills and William (#2) Mills were brothers although nothing has yet been found to substantiate this theory except for preponderance of evidence based upon these facts and these records that bring them together as probable sons of William Mills (abt. 1722-1795) and wife, Amy [maiden name unknown], and thus brothers. The information below appears to connect Jeremiah much more closely to the fact that he is s/o William (#1) Mills and wife, Amy, than to Jeremiah (#1) being a son of Elias, as so many seem to indicate. 1. Jeremiah (#1) Mills and William (#2) Mills were administers of the estate of William Mills (#1). (Essex Co., NJ Records, 1795) 2. Jeremiah (#1) Mills and William (#2) Mills were adjacent owners of land in Somerset Co., NJ. It is my belief that Jeremiah (#1) and William (#2) are brothers and their ownership of adjacent equal lots in Somerset Co., NJ in 1804 indicates this probable relationship. (Somerset Co., NJ Deeds, 1804) 3. Jeremiah (#1) Mills and William (#2) Mills names along with William's wife (Rebecca) and his mother ("Amy Mills") are found in the records of Scotch Plains Baptist Church in Union Co., NJ. Also, found buried in this church cemetery is their sister, Elizabeth (Mills) Roll, wf/o Jacob Roll, dau/o William (#1) and Amy. 4. Jeremiah (#2) Mills (1769 NJ-1860 Warren Co., Ohio) married 1798 in the Scotch Plains Baptist Church to Abigail Bryant. Jeremiah (#2) Mills was s/o Jeremiah (#1)Mills and Elizabeth Marsh. 5. William W. (#3) Mills (1790 NJ-1873 Shelby Co., Ohio) married 1810 in the Scotch Plains Baptist Church to Elizabeth Clark. William W. (#3) Mills was s/o William(#2) Mills and Rebecca. William W. (#3) Mills paid taxes in Warren Co., OH in 1810, but did not move there until 1822. (Warren Co., OH Tax Records) 6. Jeremiah (#2) Mills and wife, (1) Abigail Bryant, left NJ for Warren Co., Ohio; sometime later (1820) William W. (#3) Mills also left NJ to join Jeremiah (#2) Mills in Warren Co., OH. Here both lived for about 3 years before William W. (#3) Mills was able to purchase land 1823 in Shelby County, Ohio. At this time they apparently went their separate ways. (Sutton's 1883 Edition of History of Shelby County, Ohio: Cynthian Twp.: William Mills) 7. Jeremiah (#2) Mills died in Warren Co., OH. (Gravestone indicates he was from Essex Co., NJ.) He was in Hamilton Co., OH 1802; in Montgomery Co., OH in 1810; and 1818 in Warren Co., OH. 8. Family research for my ancestor, William W. Mills, indicates he, too, was in Montgomery Co., OH; Hamilton Co., OH; Warren Co., OH; and lived most of his life in Shelby Co., OH, before dying in Miami Co., OH. Also one needs to take into consideration that Montgomery Co., OH and Warren Co., OH were parts of Hamilton Co., OH at one time; that Miami Co., OH was part of Montgomery Co., OH at one time; and that Shelby Co., OH was part of Miami Co., at one time. ********************************************* I am certainly open to others' research that would prove my conclusion to be wrong, but the records I have at this time, appear to validate my theory of Jeremiah's (#1) Mills father was William (#1) Mills rather than other's who give no sources or reason for declaring him as s/o Elias Mills.
