    2. PAt, Do you know the names of all Mills buried in the cemetery you mention here? Thanks. Ken Mills In a message dated 10/24/2005 12:55:40 AM Eastern Daylight Time, ChekWriter@aol.com writes: Do not know if this could be related or not, but there is a cemetery in the area of Troy, Ohio, that is called the "MILLS-WELLS" Cemetery. The MILLS cemetery is back behind an old farm house kind of up on a knoll. About a mile down the road, and in about the same situation, is another cemetery, the "WELLS" cemetery. On some maps, they are marked as both MILLS-WELL Cemetery.

    3. My ancestor Willis S.(Sanford) Mills married Elizabeth Brown in Nelson County Kentucky 3 Oct 1811. Can you tell me if and how Willis is connected to the Mills in your post below? I know nothing about Willis-parents, siblings, etc. He is found right next to Nelson Co in Washington Co KY on the 1820 Census. His family then is in Johnson County Indiana on the 1830 Census. He dies and his wife Elizabeth never remarries. She is found as head of family in 1840, with a widowed daughter in 1850. Members of this family then go to Iowa. Any help is greatly appreciated! 2. Do not know if this could be related or not, but there is a cemetery in the area of Troy, Ohio, that is called the "MILLS-WELLS" Cemetery. The MILLS cemetery is back behind an old farm house kind of up on a knoll. About a mile down the road, and in about the same situation, is another cemetery, the "WELLS" cemetery. On some maps, they are marked as both MILLS-WELL Cemetery. Someone told me that another cemetery was moved and or buried under the earth used to build an overpass very near to these cemeteries on the highway on the way to Troy, Ohio, near Tipp City. This was back in December 1988, when I was back visiting with my cousins in Ohio. It was very cold, and had snowed. My boots soaked up the moisture from the ground, and I still have not been able to get them cleaned up since. I guess I sort of brought home some of my family ooze from there with me forever. At this time, these years past, they both might have been plowed under by the farmer who then owned the property. As in all things progress, does happen. I know that one of my great greats is buried there, and he was a Civil war survivor. ( Some children and others too. Buried about 1790's to 1870s. ) My cousin was talking about getting a marker to be put there on the graves, but do not know if this would have kept the farmer from exercising his right to utilize the land for crops. Very much, corn and soy etc in the area. Will have to write to my cousin once more, and get the exact description of the cemetery locations, and county etc, there in Ohio. 1. Darius Ogden Mills
    2. Helen S. Ullmann
    3. Here's some stuff I put together years ago on Darius Ogden Mills. I don't think this mailing list allows italics or my other formatting. I've expanded some of my references and put titles in all caps. I'm sure there's a lot more information out there about him. Try some California Who's Who type books. Helen Ullmann Darius Ogden Mills, son of James and Hannah (Ogden) Mills of North Salem, Westchester Co., N.Y. (biog. of son Ogden, NEW YORK GENEALOGICAL & BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD, 60:255, hereafter "biog." or NYGRB; a correction of his name appears at 61:92) was born 25 September 1825 (The Historical Company, PROMINENT FAMILIES OF NEW YORK [New York, 1897], p. 405; J. Thomas Scharf, HISTORY OF WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NEW YORK [1886], 1:513). He died 4 January 1910 (Heidgerd Collection [at the New Paltz, NY, library and the Orange Co., NY, Genealogical Society). He was of Sacramento, Cal., when he married at Craig Hill, Irvington, Westchester Co., N.Y., 5 September 1854 (NEW YORK EVENING POST of 7 Sep. 1854, extracts at the New England Historic Genealogical Society [call no., old catalog, NYC/15/20, 14:93, but now online at www.NewEnglandAncestors.org; PROMINENT FAMILIES; N.Y. HERALD of 7 Sep. 1854) Jane Templeton Cunningham, daughter of James T. Cunningham (biog.; NY EVENING POSTof 7 Sep. 1854). James Mills moved from Dutchess Co. to New Salem, Westchester Co., N.Y., where he was "a large landholder, supervisor of the town, postmaster and justice of the peace. His death occurred in 1841. He had six sons and one daughter" (PROMINENT FAMILIES). The daughter Adeline married 20 August 1857 Ansel Ives Easton, son of Samuel and Fanny (Ives) Easton. Ansel died in San Francisco 22 August 1868 and Adeline was living in San Mateo in 1898 (William Starr Easton, DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH EASTON, HARTFORD, CONN., 1636-1899 [St. Paul, Minn., 1899], p. 111). According to the Edward C. Mills Collection at the Ohio Historical Society (1:412), James Mills was the son of James and CC (Boyce) Mills of Jamaica, L.I., Pound Ridge, Westchester Co., and Kortright, Delaware Co., N.Y. James, Jr., had children named William O., James, George, Niles, Darius Ogden, Edgar and Adeline. His brother Henry settled at Rhinebeck, brother Benoni lived at Kortright and brother Lewis died intestate (see Delaware Co. deeds). However, Scharf seems to think James, Jr., was from the North of England, but this was probably an assumption that he descended from George 1 Mills of Jamaica, N.Y. Hannah Ogden was born in N.Y. in 1796 and died in 1850; James died in 1842, a landholder and justice of the peace. His son Niles Easton Mills was born in 1824 and married Helen Todd (query from Monica Mills Homer, 1079 N. Bella Vista Ave., Pasadena, CA 91107, in MILLS MUSINGS 3 [1997]:29, which adds another child, Maria). In 1841 Darius was a clerk in New York City but in 1847, at age 22, he became "cashier of a bank and partner in a business house" in Buffalo, N.Y. (PROMINENT FAMILIES). He went to California in 1849, was a merchant and banker. "He returned to NY in 1880 where he built the Mills Building at Broad and Wall Streets...." (?). He "established in Sacramento the financial institution of D.O. Mills & Co. In 1864, in association with other business men of San Francisco, he organized the Bank of California, of which he became president.... He retired permanently from active business on the Pacific coast in 1878" and moved to New York (PROMINENT FAMILIES). Children, surname Mills: i. Ogden Mills, b. Sacramento, Calif., in 1856; d. at his res. 2 East 69th St., NYC, 29 Jan. 1929; bur. at St. James' Church, Hyde Park 31 Jan. 1929; m. 11 Apr. 1882 Ruth Livingston, dau. Maturin Jr. and Ruth (Baylies) Livingston; a portrait is on the page facing his biog.; Harvard 1878; Maturin Livingston d. Thurs. night at New York at the res. of his son-in-law Mr. Ogden Mills in his 73rd y after a long illness, a citizen of Staatsburg (Losee, p. 160, from a paper of 7 Dec. 1888; NYGBR, 20:46). Ruth d. in Paris 13 Oct. 1920 (Heidgerd). See the biog. for more on his career and family. In 1914 he became a life member and benefactor of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYGBR, 45:196). He built "the fabulous Mills mansion in Staatsburgh" (DUTCHESS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY YEARBOOK, 68 [1983]:114). At least one child, Ogden Livingston Mills, b. Newport, R.I., 23 Aug. 1884 (NYGBR, 69:1) or 1883, d. 11 Oct. (NYGBR, 69:1) 1937 (DCHS Yearbook, 69[1984]:102); res. 2 E. 69th St., N.Y.C. (Heidgerd) ii. Elizabeth Mills, b. 1857 or 1858 (age at d.); d. at Saint Jean, Cap Ferrat, France 29 Apr. 1931 (NYGBR, 63:184); m. 26 Apr. 1881 (Ibid.) How is your wife related to DO? Would behappy to share what I have with you.

    1. MEADOWCROFT Family Bible with connection to MILLS Family
    2. Shelley & Tomas Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old bible which appears to have belonged to the HEATON & MEADOWCROFT Family. Information contained in the bible suggests that at least some of the children were born in England and some in the US, Pennsylvania to be exact. Information contained in the bible is as follows: MEADOWCROFT & HEATON Family Bible Betty MANOCK 11th Sunday after Trinity 19 August 1849 William MEADOWCROFT born 4 Sept 1836 Based on limited research I did find record of William MEADOWCROFT b. 6 Nov 1836 in Milnrow, Lancashire, England, the son of Robert & Jane MEADOWCROFT. Betty MEANOCK born 17 Jan 1836 I also find record of Betty MEANOCK b. 13 Mar 1836 in Royton, Lancashire, England, the daughter of James & Hannah MEANOCK. William MEADOWCROFT and Betty MENOCK married 21 Oct 1856 Jane MEADOWCROFT born 7 Mar 1857, died 1 Feb 1858 Hannah MEADOWCROFT born 7 Mar 1859, died 9 Dec 1860 Eleanor MEADOWCROFT born 12 Dec 1860 1881 British census records indicate that Elener MEADOWCROFT age 20 b. in Royton, Lancashire, England was living in Middleton in Oldham, Lancashire, England with her Grandmother, Hannah MILLS. Hannah MILLS was said to be 67 years old, a widow, born in Ribondon, York, England a Fustian Cutter employing 9 people in her own business. Also living in the household at that time was Hannah's son Mark MILLS age 33, a daughter Mary E. MILLS age 23, Elener age 20, and Mary MEADOWCROFT age 15, another Grand Daughter and sister to Elener listed below. I'm guessing that this is Betty's Mother having remarried into the MILLS Family. R. Florence MEADOWCROFT born 18 Mar 1863 Robert MEADOWCROFT born 20 Mar 1864 Mary MEADOWCROFT born 20 Aug 1865 James MEADOWCROFT born 18 Nov 1866 James HEATON born 4 Apr 1863 and Eleanor MEADOWCROFT born 12 Dec 1860, married 28 May 1887 I believe that this may be James HEATON the son of John & Leah HEATON whose family was living in Barton Upon Irwell, Lancashire, England during the 1881 British census. John was age 58, a Silk Weaver, his wife Leah, age 40, with 5 children at the time, John age 26, Ann age 22, James age 18, Arthur age 14, and Sarah age 5. All were born in Prestwich, Lancashire, England. In 1900 the family is living in the United States, specifically in Philadelphia, PA with two children, Clara age 4 years, and William age 1 year. Records indicate that the couple had 4 children with only 2 living at the time. The records also confirm that the couple has been married for 12 years. James lists his occupation as House Painter. James & Elinor HEATON are recorded in the US census of 1920 living in Pennsylvania, indications are that they returned to the US in 1916. Their son William was living with them at the time of the census. Henry HEATON born 29 Oct 1887, died 6 Dec 1887 Arnold HEATON born 15 Nov 1893 Clara HEATON born 30 Jun 1895 at 6020 Hazel Ave West Phila USA William Arthur HEATON born 6 Jul 1898 at 6020 Hazel Ave West Philadelphia Social Security records list his date of birth as 7 July 1898. William died in Butler County, PA on the 15th of May 1968. Arnold Albert HEATON born 2 Oct 1900 at 6029 South Street, Phila Listed as Albert A. HEATON during the 1920 census of PA, living in Philadelphia, age 19. Place of birth listed as PA, unmarried at the time of the census. James HEATON born 26 Dec 1902 at Worsley Rd, Patricroft, England It appears that James was in the USA by 1920, living in East Vincent, Chester Co., PA a patient at the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institute for the Feeble Minded. His age was listed as 17 years, born in England. Arnold HEATON died 17 Oct 1898 at Municipal Hospital 22nd Street & Lehigh Ave, Philadelphia, PA, USA, buried at Fernwood, Del. Co., 18th of Oct I am not sure why the difference in dates of birth from the bible to other records (though I tend to accept the bible records as fact rather than the state documents) however I am thinking that it might be the difference between actual birth date and christening or baptism dates recorded with the church. I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old piece of family history can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
