    2. There is also a Thomas MILLS born: about the same time period as your John and Jacob. Could they have been brothers, and came with their parents with either the Winthrop Fleet, or one of the ships around the same time period? This information is on the family page for MILLS by _creisinger@sbcglobal.net_ (mailto:creisinger@sbcglobal.net) on rootsweb.com. Has the same Jacob, Michael, Keziah, Cassius, etc. listed as descendants from Jay Co, IN and Warren Co, Ohio, etc. I am not sure if it is the same family MILLS but Beverly Whitaker also found that some of her entries on her family database needed to be changed, do not know what they might have been, but it was about the various John's who were in and around PA at the time. pat cw

    2. Ken, DNA kit 5266 and kid 26042 belong to John Mills and Jacob (although Ted Mills is still looking for documentation) but on the DNA chart it says "Jacob b. 1660, England?) These are Washington Co, PA Mills who most probably were born in Frederick Co., MD. Does that help any? If you did not get a match to these two DNA tests, you are most probably not connected to this line. But you should get a match with someone soon. Sometimes the wait is frustrating. The more tests we get done the more things become clear. It's very hard to find a donor for the test, but it would be great if more would try. We have so many documented Mills families in this country that without the test it is almost impossible to get it all straight. Try and get a hold of the book "The Ten Mile Country and Its Pioneer Families" by Howard L. Leakey. There is a lot of Washington CO, PA information in this book. Maybe your library can find it for you, or you can order it from Willow Bend Books. They are online. I also recommend that anyone with ancestors in this area during the Revolutionary War read "That Dark and Bloody River" by Alan Eckhardt. It's available from Amazon in paperback for about ten bucks. The hard back copy has excellent maps of the area inside the front and back cover. Shirley

    3. Carlene lists her Mills line (see below), and it occurs to me that there may be someone on this list who is linked to the following. (These are children or grandchildren of Michael Mills, who came to Jay Co, IN in 1838.) Jacob, Aquila or David, perhaps near Noblesville, IN; Jesse, who married Sarah LaFollette and lived in IN; David, who married Margaret Wells of Liber, Jay Co, and migrated to Missouri about 1868. They had a large family of sons, many of whom were reported to he educators. They were reported to have lived in the St. Joseph area of MO. Cyrus and Casseus, both of whom went to Kansas. Among the girls in the family, Keziah married Gustus Bosworth, Amy married John LaFollette, and Rachel married Asa Davis. All of them lived in IN. Does anyone find these names familiar? 1. Re: [MILLS] re: John Mills 1727 and son John Mills 1760
    2. Ken I am Michael Mills of Mount Airy, MD. My ancestors date back to 1658 when they settled in Calvert Co., MD. I have spend many hours researching the Washington County, Maryland Mills line as I was certain that they were related. As it turns out DNA ruled otherwise and they were not related and to that end saved me much thought and additional research. However in my research I became aware of the Bedford County, PA, Mills line and have come to believe that they are related to the Washington Co., Maryland Mills line. I was able to with the help of Shirley (sevansn8s@aol.com) who is a member of this list and descendant of John Mills, Bn 1727, of Washington Co., MD, male descendant of that line and a DNA sample was provided and the results when posted proved that the Washington Co., MD Mills line was not related to my Southern, MD Mills line. That you believe that your Thomas was born at Washington Co., PA causes me thing a bit for the following reasons. Washington Co., PA was first noted to be a small camp along the trail followed by the many Rev War soldiers who came from MD and eastern, PA as they traveled westward to protect the western frontiers from the Indians and those British soldiers who had the courage and guts to go there. The camp, was then known as Catfish Camp. It did not become settled and known as Washington Township until the late 1770s (I think 1779 or thereabout) It's rise in population did not occur until after 1780 to 1784 as soldiers and family thereof began populating the area. Washington PA was the gateway to the Wheeling Creek and the soon-to-be settled Northwest Territories. As history and the records confirm, most of the Mills family members found to be in Washington Co Pa during the period 1778 to 1790, were of the Washington, MD line. If your DNA results are on file and do not much with Robert Mills of California then it is not likely that you are related to Thomas Mills of that era and in the area of Washington, PA. I will check my records for the email and name of a woman who I know is a direct descendant of Joseph Mills of Bedford County, PA. Her father is a Mills and as I recall she indicated that he would be willing to participate in the Mills Surname DNA Project. I can recall only that her name is Wendy Mills ??. But I will get in touch with her. I am convinced that Carolyn is also related to this Bedford County, PA Mills line and that would mean that Carolyn was descended from the Mills at Washington County, MD. Keep in mind that before 1776 Washington County, MD known as Frederick County and that prior to 1748 was known as Prince Georges County, MD. Ken, feel free to call me at 301.370.4393 anytime and I can then provide much more insight as to the Washington Co, MD and PA Mills lines. I do not often get the time to chat by computer as hearth, home and business keep me from the keyboard. So I am much better able to talk then type. Look forward to hearing from you soon. Michael A. Her postings were back 1998/2000. She had James MILLS as William's father. Also some refs about James MILLS Sr & Jr but could not find documents to prove its link. There is a book about early plantations in Virginia I browsed through in the Culver City, CA public library, in history department about 1989 or so. 2. Ken Mills
    3. I guess this is my best chance to jump in and, just maybe, at long last, make a connection. My ancestor is Thomas Mills, believed to be born between 1761-1770 in Washington County, PA. If he was not born there he was there from an early age as he married Hannah Winn d/o Joseph Winn and Polly Higgins in Washington County. Children were Sally 1794, John 1800, William 1804-07, Margaret 1808, James 1810-12, David Ervin (my ancestor) 1811-1820, Jonathan 1813. The family moved to Ohio (I believe to Harrison and Carrol counties first and then to Tuscarawas County) some time after the turn of the century. Sally m/ John Beamer; John m/ Margaret Hibbetts, William m/Catherine Strawn; Margaret m/ George Farabee thus fostering a long line of Farabees); David Ervin m/Ann(e) Russell; Jonathan m/Sarah Downing. My ancestor Thomas (1835) was the son of David Ervin. With all of the Millses who were in Washington County, I have always been puzzled as to why I cannot connect Thomas to the rest of them. I have for some time believed that Thomas is the brother of Carolyn's Joseph but have never been able to prove it. Perhaps if any of you from the Washington Millses can get a male Mills relative to enter his DNA we might be able top come up with something. My DNA is listed as number 5257. I have to believe that all of this must mean something to someone out there. I sure would like to hear from you. 1. Oh, no, not Martha Halstead again!
    2. Helen S. Ullmann
    3. Dear Pat and all, Please, please, please do not continue to say Jonathan Mills married Martha Halstead! There is no evidence for it! He almost certainly married Martha Wood, daughter of Timothy and ___ (Strickland) Wood. That would explain where the name Timothy in the Mills family of Morristown came from. But if you can show me some solid evidence for the name Halstead, I'll be glad to consider it. Marna, if you've been on this list for awhile, I'm sure you've heard of my book on a line from George Mills of Jamaica, NY, through Jonathan, his son Samuel and his son Samuel to Timothy of Morristown who married Phebe Lindsley. The book then follows Timothy's half brother, but you can see a lot of good info on Timothy in the Morristown Presbyterian Church records that are on Heritage Quest Online. Yes, my database, bare bones vital records, is online, at WorldConnect on Rootsweb.com and in the Ancestry World Tree at Ancestry.com. But the book has far, far, far more information. It's available from the New England Historic Genealogical Society at www.NewEnglandAncestors.org. Click on store and my name as author. It's titled A MILLS AND KENDALL FAMILY HISTORY. Do not get confused with my book on descendants of Peter Mills of Windsor, Conn. That is a totally different family. My book disagrees with several "facts" about this family, such as that George came from Yorkshire and his wife was surnamed Tanner. My arguments are based on old contemporary documents, not on later compilations. You might google for my book. We had a booksale at NEHGS a few weeks ago and some dealers picked up copies at a ridiculously low price. So you might find it on someone's website for less than the $50 NEHGS charges. Helen Ullmann

    3. Pat - We have a story in my Mills family that my Aunt, Miss Clara Belle Mills, of Plainfield, NJ was trying to trace her family line (she was my father's half sister). She allegedly was able to trace it back to "the Mayflower", but stopped when she found out that her relative (maybe mine?) was one of the first horse thieves to be hung in the new world. Don't know if ANY of it is true. Aunt Clara is long gone (she was born in 1898 or so), and I don't know if it was on my Grandfather Mills' side or her mother's side (name unknown).
