    1. More Graves Found on New Gold Line Los Angeles Boyle Heights
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: MILLS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/jE1.2ACEB/3460 Message Board Post: In a recent L A Times email, we see again another cemetery with past disrespect of the loved ones, lost, poor, and unclaimed. In digging for the new Gold Line in Boyle Heights, work had to be stopped as remains were being unearthed. Apparently, the records of just where the cemetery and crematorium ended and the street and property lines, burials were not properly documented. The crematorium was closed up, locked the doors, and no knew nothing at all. In unlocking the doors they did find record books, with names, dates, but no notation as to where who was put or when. Only one for sure name was found because his headstone was buried with him. They found watches, coins, to put the dates around the 1890's. to the 1920's. Once again, our loved ones, are lost. The powers that be are scratching their heads as to how they are going to either re route the Gold Line, or unearth the remains, and relocate them to another part of the property. (Not Likely, as the project is $898 Million.) Best this way, as they could find more unknowns, which they do not want to do. So if you are looking for loved ones in that area, you may find him or her, under your driveway, if you live in the Boyle Heights area near this cemetery. Maybe someone can contact the MTA people who are in the process, and get those record books, and get them out to those of us who have had family in California.

    1. MILLS, Dictionary of American Family Names
    2. Suzy-Q
    3. "Dictionary of American Family Names" Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-508137-4 Name History and Origin for Mills English: either a metronymic form of Mill 2, or a variant of Miles. Irish: in Ulster this is the English name, but elsewhere in Ireland it may be a translation of a Gaelic topographic byname, an Mhuilinn ‘of the mill’. Mill Scottish and English: topographic name for someone who lived near a mill, Middle English mille, milne (Old English myl(e)n, from Latin molina, a derivative of molere ‘to grind’). It was usually in effect an occupational name for a worker at a mill or for the miller himself. The mill, whether powered by water, wind, or (occasionally) animals, was an important center in every medieval settlement; it was normally operated by an agent of the local landowner, and individual peasants were compelled to come to him to have their grain ground into flour, a proportion of the ground grain being kept by the miller by way of payment. English: from a short form of a personal name, probably female, as for example Millicent. Miles English (of Norman origin): via Old French from the Germanic personal name Milo, of unknown etymology. The name was introduced to England by the Normans in the form Miles (oblique case Milon). In English documents of the Middle Ages the name sometimes appears in the Latinized form Milo (genitive Milonis), although the normal Middle English form was Mile, so the final -s must usually represent the possessive ending, i.e. ‘son or servant of Mile’. English: patronymic from the medieval personal name Mihel, an Old French contracted form of Michael. English: occupational name for a servant or retainer, from Latin miles ‘soldier’, sometimes used as a technical term in this sense in medieval documents. Irish (County Mayo): when not the same as 1 or 3, an Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Maolmhuire, Myles being used as the English equivalent of the Gaelic personal name Maol Muire (see Mullery). Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): unexplained. Dutch: variant of Miels, a variant of Miele 3. Michael English, German, Dutch, and Jewish: from the personal name Michael, ultimately from Hebrew Micha-el ‘Who is like God?’. This was borne by various minor Biblical characters and by one of the archangels, the protector of Israel (Daniel 10:13, 12:1; Rev. 12:7). In Christian tradition, Michael was regarded as the warrior archangel, conqueror of Satan, and the personal name was correspondingly popular throughout Europe, especially in knightly and military families. In English-speaking countries, this surname is also found as an Anglicized form of several Greek surnames having Michael as their root, for example Papamichaelis ‘Michael the priest’ and patronymics such as Michaelopoulos. Mullery Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Maolmhuire ‘descendant of Maolmhuire’, a personal name meaning ‘servant of (the Virgin) Mary’. This is an Ulster name, now rare. Miele Southern Italian: from a personal name or affectionate nickname from miele ‘honey’. French: metonymic occupational name for a producer of honey, from a feminine form of miel ‘honey’. Dutch: from a personal name, perhaps of Germanic origin, or from a reduced form of the personal names Amilius, Amelis, or Emilia.
