    2. Hi Adina Been awhile .... Thanks much for refreshing my memory as to John Reading Mills. I thought of you when I was writing my last emails, trying to recall the middle name of the John Mills surveyor. Hope all is well Michael A. 3. Hello, Again, Adina, and Others, I agree. Until DNA tests are run on a significant number of descendants of all our MILLS lines, we cannot be sure that a relationship does not exist. One DNA participant of a particular line does not establish one's ancestry to an assumed ancestor...as proven by a participant in one of my DNA Projects. This participant discovered after another family member participated that there must have been a significant event in the line and that one of them was not a true blood descendant. He paid for 3 others to participate in order to establish the differences and only then did he determine that his many years of research for his believed ancestor did not truly include him as a DNA descendant. I have not yet found a MILLS or two in my family line to establish my Mills connection. Good Luck, everyone, with ferreting out family connections. My gr. gr. grandfather Josiah Watkins lived in a little town in Warren Co., IN, and there were others who told me that his line was not related to the other Watkins families that also lived in the same county. After many years of determined research, I found proof that they were related. It came in the form of a probate document I found in Sussex County, DE. 3. Are you sure it was John Reid Mills? In my years of research, I found it was John Reading Mills, s/o Rev. William Mills (s/o Isaac Mills & Hannah Miller of Essex Co., later Union Co., NJ), and Mary Reading, who is related to my line of MILLS. He accompanied the Stites Expedition as surveyor. He moved his family to Hamilton Co., OH. His brother was Isaac Mills (established Elizabethtown, Hamilton Co., OH) and married Elizabeth Dunn. They were also related to Philemon Elmer Mills who laid out and helped establish the village of Sharonville, Hamilton Co., OH. Philemon Elmer Mills was s/o William Mills I and Amy [--?--] of Essex Co. (later Union Co.), NJ. 2. Just for grins you may want to research online and via the various Genealogical websites, the info available, pertaining to the Stites Expedition of 1787/88 which will give a more detailed account of John Reid Mills. I understand that John Reid Mills subsequestly recruited a brother of cousin to come out as well. I have read many references to Col James Mills and have often wondered if these two men were related. Good luck Michael A. Thank you for your response. I too do not have any wife and or children for Azur Reed MILLS on my MISC MILLS File. But now with the DNA testing that was done earlier in 2005 on my brother, puts us right in the thick of things in New Jersey. With the information about Col James MILLS and Sarah REED of Sussex Co, NJ or Berks Co, PA, whichever one you want him to be, could he be a relative, brother, cousin of the John MILLS B: 1733 of Sussex Co, NJ and the others there listed on the DNA web site. www.familytreedna.com under MILLS category 160. (Just putting that here for the benefit of any MILLS who do not subscribe to the MILLS LIST) Need for someone to do some indepth research on this new information in NJ, as to where John and James lived in Sussex Co. And also noted about Joshua MILLS, of Burlington who was in the service during the revolutionary war with a John MILLS. Not his son. Could John have been Joshua's father? Has anyone followed that anywhere? Pat cw

    3. Years ago I remember contacting someone about a connection between John Reid Mills and Col. James Mills and was told that no such connection existed. I cannot find that email now. Since Azur REED Mills was named for his maternal grandfather, the REED / REID names appear to be coincidental, even if one could demonstrate a connection between John and James. arg --- MAMILLSPI@aol.com wrote: > The Mills family you speak of was related to the > John Reid Mills, hired by > Benjamin Stites as the Surveyor following the > landing and preliminary > settlement at Columbiana, (Cincinatti) Ohio. 1. Re: [MILLS] Re: Mills>Reed (or Reid) connection
    2. Azur Reed MILLS is not listed with any wife or children on the information that Patricia Rowell on SUTTON SEARCHERS on the internet dated July 1996 provided. Also that file did not provide any information about Mark T(Thompson) MILLS either, by Linda Thompson before 1997. I put this file information together by bits and pieces, here and there. From the Family Tree Maker Family Archives of Ohio 1700 to 1970, on page 236 Hamilton County Ohio history and biographical sketches. On some Internet information and on rootsweb, it lists James as being born in Berks Co, PA and others as Sussex Co, NJ. So I guess you can take your pick of where you want him to be from depending on your family research. He is also listed as Capt. and Colonel. Seems to be the same James MILLS. But all the children listed are the same and the dates seem to jive. We now know that this family MILLS REED is also aligned with the VAN SICKLE/SICKLEN families of Canada. Will add your email address to that grouping on my email list. Kathy and Audrey Brown, Michael Brown, have also emailed to say that they have information about the VAN SICKLE families too. Don Gamble also has emailed, but his is more of an in law link. Also now it would appear that the VAN SICKLE family did live in very close proximity by county in Canada. Seela MILLS JR, also married Mary Melissa VAN SICKLE, so that is another connection that I was wondering about. I could not see Sarah MILLS, dau of James and Sarah REED MILLS who married Abraham VAN SICKLE not going up there to Canada without some other of her brothers and or sisters and children. The Plot thickens. But the break up of families was probably not unusual at that point in time. Not unlike what happened during the War between the States. Brother against brother, etc. pat cw

Azur Reed Mills had no such descendents that I've been able to pinpoint (me being one of them, and I'm not a 'Mills'), but his brother Mark T. Mills, who died ca.1843 either in Butler or Darke Co. OH, may have. He married Lydia Burdge in 1821, and while there is a Worldconnect file showing a number of children, including two sons, I only know for certain about one daughter, Sarah, from the Darke Co. Ohio history. This line would be well worth exploring if there were in fact any sons.
