Re: Mills in Boston, MA area very early on. John MILLS is listed as moving on to Braintree. I have some of his family on my files, but so far none of them show any living MILLS descendants. That was John, Susan/Susannah, Mary, Recompense, Joy, Susannah, John Jr., Jonathan, James. Some of the George MILLS of Jamaica, LI NY, children are also listed as being born in Boston, MA, but do not know if that is correct. Maybe those researchers just mixed up the wrong Jonathan, etc., with the wrong John MILLS family. Also I have on another file, that the above John MILLS, is listed as the son of John and Mary MILLS of Lavenham, Suffolk,England. And that one too has the George of Jamaica, as their son. I am not much help here. Sorry. Pat cw The only thing that I can suggest that if you know of any of your cousins who are MALE MILLS and would like to participate, ask them to get a DNA kit and send it in for comparison to those already listed. Something may shake out of that great big MILLS Tree.
Pat - The "T" undoubtedly comes from me, as that was how I originally received the info from my Uncle John Mills 30 years or so ago. I'm pretty convinced that it should have been (is) "D". I was hoping that I would discover his grave near his son's grave (my GGrand Father) in Plainfield, NJ, but when I went to visit the cemetery (Evergreen Cemetery), it was in such a state of disrepair and had been so vandalized, that I was unable to see what was on very many of the other stones there (many had been toppled and/or broken). I contacted the son of a former caretaker of the cemetery, and he said his father had some sort of records pertaining to the cemetery, but his Dad was ill. Said he would see what he could do, but I never heard from him again. I do have a pix of the headstone for David Allen Mills (Lewis D. Mills' son), his wife Elizabeth Gray, their children William Wilbur Mills (my Grand Father) and Lottie Mills. They are all in the same plot along with William's first wife Kate (?) and Lottie's husband, Harry C. Ackerman. Their stone is still untouched (so far). To Audrey and Jim, April and List: I have on one of my files that Lewis was born 1798 and on another it is 1817. For Emeline it is from 1814 to 1817. If we go with the birth dates on the 1850 census found on the Http address from Audrey, it says that they are both age 34. Put them born about 1816. That ties in with Lewis' 1817 date, per the date of the census and that he was born in November. But I do have their marriage record from the April 1988 IGI copy from my visit to the LDS FHL center Library way back when. I had nothing else for them until the DNA results became known. On the census it is showing that his middle initial/name is "D". If we go with the practice at the time that sons were middle named from their mother's maiden name, we do have the John and Anna DENMAN MILLS. But then again, we do not have anything that tells us what the "D" stood for? I do not know where the T or D came from? I checked today for Lewis T or D's on rootsweb.com, none of them fit the time frame that we are working. Thank you Audrey for sharing at least the 2 items for Lewis and Emeline. pat cw
Hi Carolyn, The Mills family you speak of is the line from Licking Creek at Indian Spings in Washington County MD. Same family that is related to Shirley Evans and Bob and Ted Mills (Both of whom have DNA smaples on file) I alsways knew the Joseph Mills of Bedford PA was related to the Mills from Licking Creek. Stephen and Hannah HYATT MILLS are listed on RootsWeb.com but have slightly different birthdate's. Did they have a dau Abigail who married Alexander Lane? Have you also tried cross checking with variant spellings of their names, Steven/Stephan/etc. and for Hannah, could be Harriet or Anna, or ? Hyatt and Hiatt. One is listed as Stephen MILLS, son of Andrew and Sarah MOREHOUSE MILLS of Jamaica, LI NY, and Fairfield, CT. wife, as Hannah Hyatt. Goes back to George of Jamaica, LI NY. See other family pages here. Also on MILLS ANCESTRY on geocities.etc. Check for other children that might be listed for him on rootsweb as well. Pat cw

But at that time you did not have any dates at all. I know that Judy BOIE and I have gone back and forth about the various Abigail MILLS' who were in the area at about that time frame. The other Abigail MILLS who married John DRIVER (1825) moved over into Indiana. There was a cholera epidemic and both Abigal and John died. Their children were raised by Uncles in Indiana and Iowa. One Elisha Sample DRIVER moved west to northern California and owned over 1000 acres, I guess cattle and farming. See Judy BOIE database for more info about that branch of the MILLS. It is nice to know now that Abigail finally has parents for sure of Jeremiah of Warren Co. OH. Cousins, I found a web site maintained by Karon Bosze that contains county timelines for PA, MD, AL, TN and VA. (WVA is listed but at present nothing is available for that state.) To see how it can be displayed, go to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~harrisonrep/Census/Mdco.html - the Maryland counties are listed in a matrix, with founding dates, derivations, and literature sources. Very useful for those of us who are working on Maryland branches of Mills families. That is not Bosze's site, however. When you go to it, at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/karon_bosze/ you find a variety of things, including database files in either self-extracting or zip format. I downloaded the Mdco (Maryland Counties) SE file (in .dbf format) and found that I needed a database program to open it. Since I use Microsoft Access, I found it relatively easy to import Bosze's Mdco data, but it takes some knowledge of how to manipulate database files..Once you have it within your database, of course, you can sort, reformat and modify it as you wish. So the initial inconvenience of having to import a database file is more than overcome by the later versatility of having the data in relational database format. At least in the Mdco file, the timeline info is alphabetically (not chronologically) arranged for existing counties, with defunct counties tacked on at the end. He especially cites and thanks Walt Williams of Calvert Co MD for source material, but there are other sources mentioned as well. Altogether, a helpful site, for which we should be grateful to Karon Bosze. Ted Mills
Jedediah and Damaris "lived at Norfolk, Conn, in the area known as Loonmeadow." This is from Katie R. Mills, HISTORY OF THE SIMON MILLS FAMILY (no place of publication, probably 1975), p. 14. But it doesn't say anything more about them. You could try ordering the microfilm, cemetery records for Norfolk in the Hale Collection of Connecticut Inscriptions. And don't forget to search probate and deeds. You can do it all on Family History Library microfilm. Helen Ullmann
