Michael and List: A couple months back I wrote a post em to Ms. Whitaker regarding how she had listed her John and Rebecca MILLS family of John MILLS of Philadelphia, PA. I noted that the children were listed almost exactly the same as John MILLS - Rebecca (Billi) SMITH family. John MILLS being of Sussex Co. NJ who about 1793/4 was escorted with 8 other families to the enemy lines. Eventually they ended up among other places in Grimsby, Ontario, Canada. Ms. Whitaker wrote back and said that she was going to research the names and so forth, and if found that there with the wrong family, would make necessary corrections to her database. At that point in time, I had a crisis in my family, and ran out without writing down what her database was numbered or named. I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar insight, and have researched the same possibility? John MILLS - Rebecca SMITH's son, Parker MILLS, married Mary ASHBRIDGE MC CLURE who was from Chester Co, PA. Parker and Mary married in York (Now Toronto) Ontario, Canada about 1794/5. Interestingly, Hannah MILLS, dau of John and Rebecca SMITH MILLS, married Lewis BEAM who was from PA. Possible son of Jacob and Catherine BOUGHNER BEAM of Lancaster Co. PA. Could it be that when things got too hot in and around Chester Co. PA, all of these families traveled together back to MD, NJ, NC, VA/WVA? Did anyone else see any similarities as well? Thank you Pat cw

I am here to tell you that I once believed this MIlls line was related to me and in that vain I spent manty man-hours researching this branch. the Quaker records are very numerous and clear on this line and are well represented by knowledgeable DNA Mills providers who are represented in the FTDNA database. Good luck Michael A Mills, CPI RESOURCE REPORTING, Inc. These Mills I am convinced are related to John Mills the Chester PA Quaker who was born in thereat in the 1680s. John Mills then travelled to Frederick Co MD in or about 1790 and when the Seven Years War broke out moved to NC. There are many and much in the way of record on this branch of Mills in the Quaker records as well as a represntative DNA provider as well. I see a lot errors as usual on John Mills Sr. b. ca 1688. I wish this information was accurate, it would remove the infamous brick wall that I have battled for the last 25 years. For those of you who remember Cheska, she had also spent a lot of time trying to find any proof of who the two wives of John Sr. were. To date, the only information found that has any references, all come from Paul Mills. An excerpt from my communications with the late Cheska: I am also familiar with the work of the late Paul Mills and long ago tossed his book in the trash as it was so full of errors that it was a detriment rather than a help. I also corresponded with his son Rodney who could not provide any basis for the links that his father made. I am aware that there was a John Mills and Sarah Mills mentioned in the Philadelphia MM records BUT I have found no evidence that they were (1) married; (2) they had any children; or (3) that Sarah's surname was HARROLD. I also find it difficult to believe that if John was the son of this Sarah that he left his widowed mother in Philadelphia and moved on to Maryland leaving her behind. My proven MILLS line of descent consists so far of: John MILLS born about 1688 died 24 11m 1760 in New Garden MM, Guilford Co., NC buried Nov 1760 in New Garden, Guilford Co., NC married probably about 1708 to Rebeckah --- who died by 1740 at Monacacy, MD. He married next to a woman also named Rebeckah by whom he also had children beginning in 1742. || Thomas MILLS born about 1709 in Chester Co., PA died 10 9m 1793 in Deep River MM, Guilford Co., NC; buried at Deep River MM, Guilford Co., NC married 18 3mo 1730 at Monoquasy (MD) under New Garden MM, PA to Elizabeth HARROLD born 10 5mo 1711 in New Garden MM, Chester Co., PA died 9 9m 1771 in New Garden MM, Guilford Co., NC buried 1771 at New Garden MM, Guilford Co., NC. || Rebecca MILLS born 30 4m 1745, died 20 Sep 1821 Springfield, Wayne Co., IN, married first 1760 New Garden MM, Guilford Co., NC to William MORGAN; married (2) 5 2m 1778 New Garden MM, Guilford Co., NC to Joseph THORNBURGH. -- -=CHESKA=- Unfortunally, Paul Mills', book contains many errors on John Mills Sr.. I have been in contact with his son Rod Mills several times over the years and he is also aware and confirms the errors. Once you get to the Children of John Sr. and his first wife, Thomas, John, Hur, Henry and Mary ..... most of the data is very accurate. Paul Mill was a descendant of Henry and I am a descendant of John Jr.... The other 7 children by John Sr. and his second wife are all mysteries. One of my fellow Mills' researchers, the late Mary MILLS Payne of champagne IL did have a lot of information on these children and their moves to SC and GA. However, with her passing these records were lost. There is no Opekan county VA nor was there ever a Opekan Co. There is a Opekon creek that is now in Berkley Co.WV. In the 1700's it was part of Frederick Co. VA This was the location of the Quaker Monthly Meeting Hopewell, and Opekon was the name that was used by many of the locals when describing the location of their home and legal documents. The reference to the name Opeckon is found in the Land Patent of John Mills ....1743 when he deeded land in his patent located "on a Branch of Opeckon, near but not adjoining Lewis DeMoss' land" (this branch is called Mill Creek today not Mills Creek) to sons Thomas, Hurr and Henry who were living in Frederick Co., VA. I have visited and phographed the VA, WV, NC, OH and TN property and Quaker MM sites. Just a point of interest, the families that are always near to the Mills' in marriage business and neighbors are Thornburg, Beeson, Ballinger, Hyatt, Wright, Mendelson, Harrold and Beals. But, never a Bates. I'm more than happy to share any information, Pictures, legal documents or Maps on these Mills lines. I will do a print out of your letter I have connections in Forest Grove so I will explore the situation ( City or University Library) a bit when I am there this spring We know our line of Mills came to Oregon in 1842 on the Oregon Trail Most of them settled in or near the Newburg area to be with their relatives, who were Quakers thanks for the information, Jmills
Pat, I don't know about Isaac Mills being Isaac Clarkson Mills, but Obediah Thornburgh who married Prescilla Mills (Issac's daughter) was named Obediah Clarkson Thornburgh, and they named their son Richard Clarkson Thornburg (dropped the H in this generation). I really doubt that Isaac's middle name was Clarkson. Think that name came from the Thornburgh side. My line is through Obed and Pressie's daughter, Rachel T. E. Thornburg and Perry Mills. Isaac Mills' parents were definitely Aaron Mills and Charity Mendenhall. I do not have the intials of "E" for either of them. At this point, I can't tell you for sure on Rachel whether it is Bales or Beals. I have her father was John Bales and her mother was named Ann. I have that Rachel died in OR on February 18, 1889. I don't have anything in my notes on the computer as to where I obtained this information. I do have a listing of Isaac and Rachel's children with one of them being John Bales Mills born April 23, 1815. At one point we made a trip to OR and did some research in a library near Forest Grove (could have even been Forest Grove, but I don't have my notes at hand to remind me), so it is possible that I found the information there. As far as Elijah Mills goes, I have not seen anything that indicates who Elijah's parents were. According to my great grandfather's death certificate, he, Perry Mills, was born in OH, but we know he was not according to census records and family information (Perry was born in IL), so I'm wondering if it was actually Elijah who was born in OH, and his son who gave the information for the death certificate was confused between his father and his grandfather's birthplace. I have not had the opportunity to research in OH as yet, but would like to do that at some point. I will be checking the DNA results. Thank you, Pat, for drawing my attention to that. Thanks for all the help on this family to everyone. Everyone please keep my search problem in mind as you exchange info on the various Mills lines. My ancestor Rev. Sol. Moses Mills, born ca 1747, joined the Rev. War 1776 from Halifax Co., VA, was at Valley Forge and the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth Courthouse and at Gates defeat near Camden. He later married 1787 in Charlotte Co., VA to Keronhappuck Rather, dau. of James and Lucy Rather. They moved to Elbert Co., GA were they remained for many years before moving to Fayette Co., GA where Moses died. Their children were William, James and Martha Clabourn Mills. The Clabourn name could be a clue to Moses ancestry, even though the surname of Keronhappuck's mother Lucy is unknown. The oldest son William named his children, in order of birth, Frances, Moses Edward, Lucy Adderline, Augustus Lafayett, Maria Louisa, Benjamin Franklin, Amanda Catherine and Susan Ann Mills. If you have any thoughts on who the parents of Moses might be, I will appreciate receiving your input. Chandler Eavenson yonahdells@alltel.net

Part of this family may be listed in the biographical sketches in the History of Preble Co. Ohio, first family of Eaton. Had first white child, Polly. He was given land , and found to belong to another. Given new land, same thing. Given new land, then moved to Indiana. Etc. Some information in the Paul MILLS book found to be in error. Even his son Rodney, so stated same. We have to remember that before they were computers, internet, etc. everything was done by hand, and by word of mouth by very elderly ancestors at the time of their interviews for the books published in 1888 by W H Beers and Co. as well. Have to take it as with a grain of salt. pat cw

The pages from the book I have indicates that John Mills, born 9-4-1778, died 9-12-1824, son of Aaron and Charity Mendenhall Mills, married 2-2-1803 to Mary Davis, born 8-15-1785, dau. of Jon and Jane Mills Davis. Their 12 children were Jane, Seth, Betsy Ann, Charity, Aaron, Karenhappuch, Miles, Miriah, Sarah, John Davis, Ira and Elihu. Also that John and Mary lived in Jefferson Co, TN. In 1807 they moved to Ohio and settled on the Big Miami, 15 miles above Dayton, where they remained for four years. Then moved farther east to the Mad River, about 9 miles east of Urbana. About 1815 they moved to Indiana where other relatives had already settled. Land was purchased in Wayne Co. where they lived until John died in 1824. One page mentions an Elijah Mills, born 2-27-1796, died 11-22-1844, son of John and Mary Pearson Mills, married 3-1-1821 Mary Hawkins, born 2-25-1800, dau. of Amos and Ann Hawkins. Their 9 children were Ann, Rebecca, Martha, John, Amos, Phillip, Elihu, Dinah and Phebe. They were Quakers as well. They passed through Jefferson Co, TN and Keokuk Co, IA before moving to Indian Territory, OK, which is now Bluejacket, Craig Co, OK, in about 1891. Subsequently, they moved to Coffeyville, Montgomery Co, KS. My grandparents were Almeda Mills and Robert Vermillion. My great grandfather was Perry Mills who married Rachel T. E. Thornburg in 1859 in IA. Perry was born in 1839 in IL. His parents were Elijah, born in IL or OH and Nancy Elmore, born in TN. Elijah and Nancy were married in 1824 in Jefferson Co, TN. We have no information at this point regarding Elijah's parents. Nancy's parents were David Elmore and Elizabeth Hammon. David and Elizabeth were married in Jefferson Co, TN in 1805. Rachel's parents were Obediah Thornburg and Prescilla Mills (this is the other line of Mills). Obed and Pressie were married in 1829 in Jefferson Co, TN. Obediah's parents were Richard Thornborough and Margaret Chase. Richard and Margaret were married in 1804 in Jefferson Co, TN. Pressie's parents were Isaac Mills and Rachel Bales. Isaac and Rachel were married in 1811 in Jefferson Co, TN. Obed and Pressie moved to Washington Co, OR between 1841-1865 where they died in early 1900's. Isaac died in 1835 in Jefferson Co, TN, and Rachel died in 1889 in OR. Is there anything you or anyone can add to the above, especially regarding Elijah Mills or his parents? Thank you.
