Hi all, I just looked at some NC Quaker Mills on the web and I am not convinced that is the correct family. A Robert Mills in Candor had a Chinese mother. That article was in a Troy, NC paper in the 50's. Anyone know who his family was, and if he stems from James Mills? Ken
Hi Jeff, Just got an email from Bobby who also has Haywood Mills. To answer your question, "I think they were Quakers". A very early Mills was said to stem from south of the James River, VA and were Quakers. I can not show that to be a fact. Ken

Hi Ken, I'm descended from the Mills family that came from that area. Thomas Mills and his wife Mary. They had a number of Children that included Rueben, William David, Mary, and possibly Henry, all of the children I think were born around 1800-1820. At sometime this family migrated to Haywood County, N.C., and the area that they settled in later became part of Jackson county, N.C. They settled on Scotts Creek... The Children married into the Elliott, and Gunter families.... Do you know if the Mills were Quakers ? That there was Native ancestry ? Do not know if it could be a related family or not, but Abraham LEE married a Sarah MILLS In Westfield, NJ Presbyterian Church, NJ. They might have removed from New Jersey and on the way to the Northwest Territory or other similar areas, might have been in Carbondale, PA for a time. Dropping off relations as they went along. Not everyone was sturdy enough to continue on. Pat cw
Some of this family is detailed on rootsweb.com message boards, on old postings. Go to Message Boards, and under MILLS, ? or other ONT CAN, put in your Clifford MILLS and it will sort out those messages with any words that match. Or were they your previous postings? pat cw Sorry I cannot help more. I do not know if any of your MILLS are related to the MILLS who came early 1793/4 to area around Clinton Twp, and Grimsby, ONT CAN. (John MILLS Rebecca SMITH family of ONT CAN, or Matthew/Mathew MILLS - Charity BOWLES family in similar areas.) See also Long Point Settlers, mentions other William MILLS families.

Thank you, I checked out the link that Helen sent. Worked great. Yes, Belmont Co, is way over to the east of the state and on the Ohio River. I was not sure how far Belmont was from Washington County, Ohio. A Capt. William MILLS, had brothers, John, and Charles. He was in charge of the Fort there, if I remember what I read, but long time ago. Charles was hired to run the mail back and forth down to Losantiville, and other towns along the Ohio, and he also took passengers if he had room in the boat. Not sure now, about how John MILLS fit into the picture. Again, HINDSIGHT. I did not keep the references, just remember some of the details that I read about them. They were very early in the Northwest Territory/Ohio, I do remember that much. I read the story there in one of the many books, history section, about Melissa and Alonzo. A frontier story of young lovers. I wondered if that was where my Elias MILLS and Julia Ann HEFFNER heard the names and they named their first 2 children, those names. - - - -- - - - - - - - My Mother and I went down to the Los Angeles Central Library, in Central City. (That was before the big fire they had in periodicals department. Thousands of books were water damaged. I hit the books for anything on Ohio, and MILLS. She hit the books that were there, and they were all in GERMAN, looking for her surname, GUTMAN, of course now we found that it is also, GUTTMAN/GUTTMANN/and other variations. For a time I went out to the San Fernando valley, in North Hollywood, CA, to the IMMIGRANT Library, that was on Lankershim Blvd, at the time. Way long time ago now. They had assists of how to interpret the printed books that were in GERMAN. Birth, death, marriages, baptisms, etc. Really helped us out a lot. Then things happened, we both ran out of any free time to spend on family history. As in all things life and family come first. But last year, I did put our GUTMAN into a GEDCOM and sent it off to a couple folk who had some of the family on ROOTSWEB.com. Andreas, Nicholas, Joseph, Andrew, Anthony listed on their databases. - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
