Ensley line comes through Rebecca A Mills, dau of Reuben and Amelia Elliott MILLS. So your Cora Mae ENSLEY are cousins marrying cousins, but a few times and laterally removed. I do not have a chart handy. cw
Thank you for giving me the name of one of the books I probably also read in the library in Culver City, CA. re plantation owners in Virginia. In the book, "Ye Early Plantation Owners in Virginia" was listed a James MILLS and a William MILLS. They were shown on a diagram next to one another of land ownership map. On the James River. I do not recall reading at that time if they were Quaker or not. This was probably late 1600s or very early 1700s. Do not recall anything about a Robert MILLS. pat cw
Thank you. Pat cw
Jeff, Do you have any birth or death dates for Thomas, son Ruben and their wives? That would allow further conformation of the Quaker question. Base on the Quaker Encyclopedia, by William Hinshaw, there are no records for Thomas and Mary or Ruben and Amelia. Ruben is a very easy name to check, there are only 3 Ruben Mills' listed 5 times and none of them had a mother named Mary. Also, and all three are in my line. Also, in 1752 the northern half of Anson Co. became Rowan Co. Then in 1778 Montgomery Co. was created from the northern half of Anson Co. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Leon Beard" <bonedigger28012@yahoo.com> To: <MILLS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 21, 2006 8:26 PM Subject: Re: [MILLS] Mills family of (modern) Montgomery Co., NC area. > Hi Lila, > My line of descent goes : > > Thomas Mills------Mary Mills > Rueben Mills------Amelia Mills > Rebecca Mills----James Ensley > Mary Mills-------J.R. There were Mills that were Quakers in Guilford NC and John Mills started the Quaker Meeting at Lost Creek Tennessee in Jefferson County. Google those two sites and use Quaker also. Hi, I have no Indian descent from a Montgomery Co., NC Mills family. But the Mills lived very near a Mr John Bolling and his wife Mary, John was born in 1729, and settled on the Forks of the Little River (John Bolling first was in NC in 1755) . He claimed Indian descent from Pocahontas, and in fact used the name Metucha (spelling) which was the Indian name for Pocahondas. Any Bolling's in your line? Ken
Hi again, The most of the settlers in early northeastern NC were from Virginia, and the land became available for them to settle on about 1668, I also read. Many Virginia Quakers removed to the Carolina Coast, as NC and SC were one Colony then. About 1715 or so Virginia became almost a hostile environment for Quakers, as NC did in 1768. As many had refused to defend Virginia. Central NC became a Quaker haven by the 1750s, as one Quaker, a "Mr. White" I think it was, traveled up the Pee Dee River from SC looking for places to set Quaker Settlements. The Pee Dee runs into modern Montgomery Co., NC, where it then becomes the Yadkin River. Some of the very early MM's became lost to time, as did their records. But for the most part, the Quaker folks left us some very nice records. I have not checked for the Mills family in those records, as my ability to get about has been slowed down some. Ken
Hi, Any dates on these families? Ken
Hi, Regarding the Quaker Mills, there is evidence some of them were Quakers. The first Mills into the area, so far as I can learn, was James Mills and a Robert Mills. I do not remember the exact title of the book, "Ye Early Plantation Owners in Virginia" something like that. I read through it in a library in Culver City, CA, USA. long time ago, before 1993. It was in the history section of the library. Possibly someone can tell me the correct name and writers and publishers and I can get it down on the right James and William MILLS, on James River, land records. Thank you Pat cw Probably on microfilm at your local LDS Family History Library center near you.
Also which Smith MILLS? They are also several on the list? Thank you Pat cw
Which Haywood MILLS are you speaking? Is this the one who is the son of Effie MILLS? Then you would be a MILLS through Effie, but not biologically for DNA purposes. You would be a BERRYHILL? Thank you Pat cw
