Re: John MILLS book, "Mills and Related Families, John "The Immigrant". Even in the words of his son, Rodney, the book was just fraught with errors. And no one should use it as a reference or source. Several library's, rumor has it, have pulled it from their shelves. See prior MILLS LIST postings by others, as well as Rodney, the son, himself of his fathers' book. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Since we are on the subject of the John and Rebecca MILLS. See also the interesting similarity between the families and the names of their children. John 1660 and Sarah MILLS - Levi, Thomas, John John 1712 and Sarah MILLS - Sarah, John, Phoebe, Rachel, Mary, Hannah, Joseph, Kezia(h), Jane, Thomas, (Elizabeth) Ann. John 1720/1721/1733/1749 and Rebecca* MILLS 1742/1744 - Sarah 1756, John, Phoebe, Rachel, Mary, Hannah, Joseph, Rebecca, Richard, Parker * It would seem that Rebecca was 14 when her first child was born. Means she got pregnant at age 13? - Hard to take, even in this day and age. John 1686/89 and Rachel** MILLS 1688- Thomas, John, Hur(ry), Henry, Mary, William, Rebecca **Where Rachel seems to have been about 21 when her first child was born in 1709. John 1689 and Rebeckah***1700 MILLS - William, Rebecca, George, Benjamin, Alias(?) (Elias)? Alice, Tabitha, Jonathan, Richard Sr. ***Shows that the age of her first child was born when she was 42 years old? DO not THINK SO. John 1740 and Sarah MILLS - Samuel, Jane, Sarah, Abigail, William, Mary, John, Zachariah, Ruth, Alice, Lydia, Rachel, Ann. And not all of you are sure of their paternity, as Thomas, John, Hurr, and Henry are listed as "Guardian" on their name lines. Others have as "Adopted". We possibly know that the 2 John MILLS and Rebecca and Sarah and Rachel families were all supposed to have been in the area of Philadelphia and surrounding counties at the same time frame. It would have been very easy for John MILLS, of Woodburn, to get them confused. (which apparently he did, as well as other researchers. It has also come to light that all of these families were also in Maryland, too. So I can how easy it would be for them to get garbled.(By the place of birth of their spouses.) So all of you can see how some of the information that was in Mr. Mills' book could not have been correctly reported. Pat cw
Not sure where or what you are looking for, county wise? But try Montgomery, Jackson and Haywood. In Haywood County, you may try James ENSLEY. He was father to Rebecca A MILLS children, John Wilson and Mary. Rebecca married to Thomas "Clem" WOOD. Some of the children John and Mary, were rumored to be on census as WOOD and not MILLS. Might account for the absence. From John Wilson MILLS on down, I do not have any place names. Maybe on other gen sites? Seems like the MILLS are linked in some way to Miami County, Ohio with the CLONTZ family. From there it would appear that some of the aligned families all of the above, went down further to GA, then to AL then to FL. and also some over to LA and to TX. It is kind of a puzzle to put them all together. Pat cw
All I have seen about this is in the work of Paul and Rodney Mills where they indicate that John Mills, b. 1688 in PA, died 1760 in Roane Co., NC, m. 1st Rachel Bates, m. 2nd Rebeckah Harrold(or Stefan, or Wright.) By 2nd wife he, John, had a son George Mills, twin to Benjamin, born 1747. By first wife Rachel Bates he had son Henry Mills (1720-1810) who in turn had a son Moses Mills (1743-1759) and a son Aaron Mills (1449-1794). Aaron Mills in turn had a son Moses Mills, born 1787, and a son Aaron Mills, born 1791). The Aaron Mills who was son of Henry Mills also had a son John Mills (1778-1824) who had a daughter Kerenhappuch Mills, born 1812. I have always suspected that my Moses Mills (ca1747-1833) of Halifax Co., VA had some connection to the above Mills family but have not been able to prove it. As for the name Kerren-happuch, it is a Bibical name. See Job 42:14-15, Job's third daughter, whose name meant "horn of antimony," an eye paint that was used as a beautifier by oriental women to make their eyes large and lustrous..."And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job (Job 42:15). [From the book "All the women of the Bible" by Edith Dean.] I have seen the name shown as above, Kerrenhappuch, and as Karenhappock, Kerenhappuck, Keronhappuck, etc. in various places. My Moses Mills married Keronhappuck Rather 1787 in Charlotte Co., VA and some of her Rather cousins, descendants of Samuel Rather, went to Roane and Rutherford Cos.,TN and Huntsville and Madison Cos., AL. I understand there were also some Mills in Roane Co., TN. I was just on the internet in search of some information about SEABORN and ran across other families of COKER - WILSON in Elbert CO. GA. Did you look in Roane County, Tennessee. There were Rather's and Mills living there early 1800's and 1900's. If I see anything I forward it. My Grandfather, Adam Miller, who also served in the Rev. War, moved to Roane County, in 1809 and generations that followed still are in the area. The Rather family was there at that time.
To all in the Mills list Mills Mountain is located in the Berkley Springs area of West Virginia off Rt. 522. .... This Mills was NOT related to the Washington County, MD / PA Mills line which Shirley Evans and Carolyn Hughes are related. But I am hard pressed to believe due to its location that the Mills family of which the mountain is named is the same as the Mills family of James River and Halifax area. Local area lore says that the Mills Mountain family was derived from an Indian. I think though that is not likely but who knows. A little miscegenation will keep'em all guessing and back then it helped keep you from being scalped. Hard to say. I have much to say with regard to the Halifax / James River Mills family as I am out William Mills of Calvert County who arrived there about 1650. The public records of Prince George's County, MD and Beaufort County NC report that some of the grand children of William Mills (Son John and Daughters Mary and Elizabeth) moved to that NC as early as 1719. I wish I had m ore time to sit and type because I have much to offer to this discussion, but I do offer anyone who is curious to feel free to call me anytime via cell phone during the day or at home in the evening as I am better able to talk then to type.
