    1. RE: [MILLS] Mills of Darke Co, Ohio
    2. Audrey Hancock
    3. My William W. MILLS family of Westfield Twp., Essex Co. (now Union Co.), NJ moved ca1830s from NJ through PA to Hamilton Co., OH, to Warren Co., OH (living with or near relative, Jeremiah Mills), to Montgomery Co. & Miami Co., OH. He and his family finally settled in Shelby Co., OH, and after the death of his wife, he remarried and moved to Miami Co., OH where he died. They descend from other ancestors of Westfield Twp., Essex Co. (now Union Co.), NJ and Elizabethtown, NJ...perhaps descended from assumed early immigrant George Mills of Long Island, NY. A grandson of my Wm. W. Mills was in Darke Co., OH for a time. Darke Co., OH (mid-section of Ohio, western county of Ohio bordering Indiana) Shelby Co., OH (north of Miami Co.) both border east of Darke Co., OH. Auglaize Co., OH (north of Shelby Co., OH) Allen Co., OH (north of Auglaize Co., OH) Montgomery Co., OH (south of Miami Co., OH) Preble Co., OH (south of Darke Co., OH, western county of Ohio bordering Indiana) Guernsey Co., OH is the second county to the west of the eastern border of Ohio with that sliver of West Virginia that extends northward. I think one of the biggest things in research is also to know when and from which counties were formed. Montgomery from Wayne Co., Michigan (1803). Miami Co. from Montgomery Co. (1807). Preble Co. from Montgomery Co. and Butler Co. (1808) Darke Co. from Miami Co.(1809). Shelby Co. from Miami Co. (1819). Allen Co. from Shelby Co. (1820). Guernsey Co. evidently has no connection with these western Ohio counties. Guersey is east and Darke is on the west in Ohio...so they really aren't close. 3. I am searching to make a connection with the Joseph Mills and John Mills listed in the History of Darke Co, OH by Beers book. But records are becoming more scarce as I trudge on! Marsi ChekWriter@aol.com wrote: Carol and Marsi: Possibly he might also be a relative of Col. James MILLS, of Darke County, Ohio. Col James and his wife, Sarah REED, came from Sussex Co. NJ very early 1800's. Were first in Hamilton Co. Ohio, and then removed up to Darke Co. little bit later on. Related surnames to MILLS - REED, VANSICKLE/VAN SICKLE/SICKLEN/SICKLER etc. of Ontario, Canada. Their daughter, Sarah, married Abraham VanSICKLE and he was a loyalist too. Am sure that some of his and her relatives might have gone up to Canada at the time of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 with the British. Other MILLS families came very early on to the Northwest Territory 1788, when it opened up for settlement. But there were others who were there earlier, considered as "squatters" from KY, TN, and other early states. Pat cw Checked my files, too, I do not have a James Lewis, other than your query back in 2004. ============================== View and search Historical Newspapers. She recalls being age 7-10 years old (1930-1933) when the nephew (grand-nephew?) of her grandmother (MF Mills) was DYING OF MALARIA IN A HOSPITAL IN ST LOUIS, MISSOURI. Surprisingly, she was brought in to see him - she recalls him as being middle aged. He was a SINGLE man working as an ENGINEER ON THE PANAMA CANAL and he contracted malaria which ultimately killed him in St. Louis sometime in that 1930-1933 era. You might find a Missouri obituary about that time. I DO have corroborated information about the parents of Charles B. Mills back a few generations, if you want it. I am subscribed to Ancestry.com so if you are also you could access it throught their World Tree forum. I REALLY appreciated reading the historic article that you posted! My grandfather (son of Mary Frances Mills) was named Charles B. Davis - now I know that he was most likely named after the older brother of his mother, Charles B. Mills who lost his left arm in the Civil War and moved to Arkansas when age 27 with his parents, then married one year later. It also corroborated information that I had and gave me new information for my research. My family moved to Colorado in the 1970's from St. Louis. Where do you live? Also, I am waiting to hear back from a relative (a 'Lisa') who purchased a Mills Family Bible from the late 1800's in the past six months, so perhaps we will learn more through that.
